I'm so tired of role playing games that are completely class and level based, I can't take it any more. With all the brillions of games out now, there's bound to be one or two that are skill based. For example, one of my favorite games of all time is Betrayl at Krondor. In that game, you had a handful of skills and each went up based on how much you used it. I think if this was expanded upon to give greater experience to that skill based on if practice is under the supervision of an instructor or at least someone more skilled, and if the practice being done is new and challenging, this would be an awesome system for a MMORPG. I would also like a world that isn't completely based on killing things, but hey I can only dream about that I guess.
So any help from the experts on what's available?

From what I have read about Faces of Mankind there are no levels or classes but it is RPG/FPS. The RPG is that the game is heavily story driven with missions and an economy while it is twitch.

Check the game out and see if this is what you have been looking for.
Its too bad Elancia's English project was scrappped the only thing you gained levels in was "weapon levels " and "skill levels" I kind of miss that game ;_;

Just to let everyone know, it's Face of Mankind, not Faces :P
But the game is already looking to be very fun. No leveling treadmill, no skills to learn and lose. Heavily storybased, so this game will be a roleplayer's dream.
I represent the emotion of...
For you who don't know what the emotion apathy is... it's basically the lack of caring about anything... making people seem cruel or cold...

I think levelling sucks too (reminds me too much of my endless hours of trying to perfect myself on FFVII). I went to check out Face of Mankind, and it does look like an interesting game, and the lack of levelling and a class system is refreshing because there aren't a lot of those games out there...

On Gunblade's suggestion, I looked into Realms of Torment, and was he ever right!! There was even a round tablke discussion where the lead designer talked at length about the short sightedness of most MMORPGs sticking to played out leveling treadmills. See:

When I looked at the game at the website, it seems very exciting indeed. Skills and not classes are what a character can work on, and there's possibilities for trading, mining, building of towns, and empires, and wars of all kinds!! I only hope the recommended 512M Ram isn't absolute, cause I've only got a weeny 256. Anyways, read all aboot it:

Does anyone know of any games that have crept outside the mold like this that are already out?
I looked closer into Realms of Torment and it seems that's it's still a leveling threadmill just like many other games.
I'm not saying that it's bad but when i compared Face of Mankind and Realms of Torment it seems that only FOMK offers a chance to have a real RPG in MMORPG, and much more fun because of that i guess.
Shots out!

Yeah Ultima is a good game, my problem with it is that I need a game in 3D.
I think I'm addicted to 3D graphics, and all the 2D doesn't offer me so much fun anymore.

High requirements of 3D enviroment MMORPG's is the other story.
The biggest problem is that many of them have engines which actually need a lot of work after the game is being released.
Planetside needs a really good computer to work nicely with higher details from what i have seen during my free trial.
