I remember the days of EQ and WoW where creating a guild didn't take 5 minutes and something like 2.5 Plat. It was involved (I'm not sure about guild creation in WoW) and in EQ could take quite some time. There was repuations and sometimes I based judgement on a person I met ingame just because of the guild that they were in.
It seems that everyone and their brother can create a guild and has created one. I'm sick of these one to ten member guilds that are completely inactive and ask if I want to join them.
I'm just venting because I miss the good old days of EQ and the way that I guild system was set up. Where there was a lot guilds but you got to know them all after awhile.
Also in guild wars if I want to play a alt just to get away and be alone from my friends and do my own thing I CAN'T. I hate that part.

At one time in Beta Lion's Arch was only place to make guild. Later on they added Ascalon because they wanted to test out Guild aspects. Its a common effect that everyone wants to lead a winning team. However its often impractical. We have large membership, 40+, however because we are international we have average of 6 players on at a time. We do make regular schedule for GvG or team PvP but its still not as frequent as some would like it.
If you want to get into GvG then I would look up top ranked guilds and start posting on their boards for admission. Mine is ranked 2,400ish - so I doubt I will be gaining anyone's interest for GvG purposes.
Last month we had 3 members leave because a new cape designed by one of them wasn't well received...(I was away for short while and appointed another member as GM and they made the cape). I came back to discover that We had a crap design and several members gone. Point is, no one has exactly same reasons for being in guild as everyone. Silly things like capes can influence you on who to join.
btw, I liked the older capes GW had in beta. They were smaller and they didn't hide the detail of your armor
ACtually, i Like the way that Guild Wars handles Guilds, lets guilds not only be super powers. and not all may be "know" but more of just a circle of friends that enjoy playing together, or even learning the game together... In Time Some will die out, leaving what active players are left in it to go to other guilds...

In the story line of Guild Wars they plan on there being a lot of guilds, which is why you can't have guild halls in Ascalon, they don't want to have the corruption of the guilds that plagued the 1st king.
I agree there are far too many guilds and i even am leader of one of the smaller ones because it was handed off to me. The only reason if feel compelled to stay is that i shelled out 2k for a cape in hopes of bringing in members and while so far it hasn't helped i may just stay in the guild solo for the hell of it till level 20 same with my alts.
I used to agree with this, but when I think about it, I'm not so sure. Storyline wise, it would kind of make since. You've got an entire world built upon guilds and their influence. Obviously, there would be tons of smaller groups running around looking to make a name for themselves. As far as practicality goes. I'm a bit on the fence. Sure putting them at Lion's Arch would make it where they have to prove themselves, and increasing the price would make a person think twice about creating some crappy guild and then going around shouting "r0xx3r2 d4 b0xx3rz NOW RECRUITING HAVE CAPE AND SAVING UP FOR GUILD HALL! PM WITH REQUEST", but there's also the community aspect. Who do you think you'd be closer to. A group of people that you had to prove you weren't a moron to, or guys you've fought your way up through the ranks with from the beginning? It's just a dilema. Right now, it hasn't become enough of a nuisance for me to be totally for the former, so I just kind of lean towards the later.
The only thing that bothers me is the constant spam. It's pretty much up there in WTS text spamming my text box (because virtually no one can be bothered to use the Trade channel, of course. the game should automatically filter text out of local chat if it has "WTS" in it).
I don't bother paying attention to my text box when in outposts or towns.
Still, I think that they should add a toggle to disable guild invites. I'm sure that would make some folks happy.
Well, I can't think of a better system, right now unless guilds were rewarded as prizes for competitions. For example if you win this tournament you get a to be the leader of a guild. That would make it a lot harder to get a guild and mean that only the worthy would belong. Although it would mean that their would be barely any GvG and almost everyone would be wearing the same cloaks.
Well I agree and I disagree it is a little bit of a complicated situation. I mean like in my case I do disagree because the guild that I am in is mostly ppl I know in real life so it's kinda cool. As far as the spamming yea I totally agree it is reallllly annoying seing ppl over and over recruiting, actually for me it's gotten to the point where I just guild and team chat enabled. You are right though it should be ALOT more difficult for ppl to start a guild. Eh I dunno I guess it's just a matter of opinion huh?
I don't think the number of guilds really matters. You can always look up their ranking and talk to their recruiter. As far as spams... The new 100g per invite should slow that down a bit... But lots of games have spam invite problems... To date I still don't know a spam invite guild that ever really lasted.
The best way to remove yourself from any precevied problem of their being too many guilds is to join a good one. A good guild will meet your needs and also give you time to do you own thing. Still I've gotten invites after doing well in missions inspite arleady being guilded.
A good guild really makes the game... They can set goals Such as "This month we will focus on a caster build for GvG" this allows the game to always be changing. I know that without my guild, I would of grown tried of GWs rather quickly. PuGs are tiring as is trying to get a decent group for PvP. Thus I would suggest all players of guildwars to find a guild that suits them. And if someone tricks you into joining their guild... and you want out... just leave. You owe them nothing.
Some general guidelines when looking for a guild would be. Make sure they have a website and/or active forum. If they have a forum with no posts less than a then a week old that's a bad sign. Forums are needed in GW more then most other games because you need to organise builds. Also make sure they have a rules page or charter and some recruitment policy to get out bad apples. If the members are clearly active and responsive that's a plus.
the guild I'm in doesn't do any active recruitment, and only allows about 4-6 people to join a month, those people are tried for 2 weeks then are voted on by all members. We often have a wait list. So a guild doesn't need good recruiters as much as it simply needs to be a good guild and people will be drawn to it.
I agree with Bent in the fact that the number of guilds in Guild Wars really doesn't matter. I think it is pretty cool that just about anyone can start up a guild. With sigils costing 30-50K it takes some skill (either playing or begging) to get that money for a Hall. That is be the major draw for newer players. I know for me, I chose my first guild for the cape and had plans on saving up for a Hall of my own. 300 plat later, I have more than enough for my own guild but I developed a relationship with the one I started with. There are about 25 people on our roster with 9-11 being active. The 9-11 have different time schedules due to time zones so we cant GvG as much as desired. Instead of the active group starting up a brand new guild, we are looking to do something different. We decided to try and find a friend guild to join that would let the officers come in as officers so that whichever guild we join into will GvG more often. Hopefully with our active players and the other guilds active players, there will alway be enough for GvG.
I think as ANet begins to create more guild related content, guild storage and training grounds, more guilds will condense. People will start wanting to share the experience with others as opposed to just being content to try and GvG with 3 people and henchies. I am excited to see where GvG heads here over the next couple months as even more tweaks to skills come into play
It is that whole American Dream thing for some players, starting with no money in their pockets and growing a guild to climb the ladder. Let them have their fun. I mean most guilds had to start out with one person who requested/spammed for people to join. Obviously others are groups that all started guilds at the same time. Keep the guild purchasing system the same and let the future updates decide how people are going to approach it. If you want to make sure of the quality of the guild you will join, let them know ahead of time that you are trying them out. No sore feelings that way.
