WoW is a good game, it has a somewhat childish community, but thats just me generalising, theres some pretty nice ppl i have met ingame.

Would also like to point out EvE online and SWG in your into scifi, those games are complex, deep and pretty much open ended.

All ur Mountain Dew is belong to me.

i think WoW would suit your well.there is crafting in the game, but this is so easy even my dog can do it. there is plenty of pvp.
  • scaramooshscaramoosh Member Posts: 3,424

I wouldn't go for WOW theres not much to do but leveling and once your lvl 60 theres nothing to do!

SWG has lots of stuff to do but atm the game is a big mess that needs sorting out! The CU has just added to the mess because the game was not designed for it , So it needs to be fixed first.

eve online you don't level and it gives freedom to do what ever you want, doubt this person will like it tho.

Atm theres not much choice, maybe in the future HJ look snice

Honestly I think you'd like EQ2 best of the current fantasy crop. It's got tons of different things to do, crafting, questing, etc and you won't level constantly but you will level at a moderate rate. It's not super hard (think of EQ1) and it's not super easy (WOW/GuildWars) it's somewhere in between speed of levelling wise. In the end game you have the option to solo if you want to or do other quests or join groups or raid. Or, of course, craft. You also have your own appartment that you can buy or make furniture and decorations for and decorate it. And the virtual storefront you can open is very nice too now that you can sell items to players even when you're offline. The new PVP patch that's coming in September will allow PVP similar in style to GuildWars as well.

WoW has the options of raiding and questing and grouping but crafting is an afterthought and there's no player housing at all. It's got PVP Battlegrounds too but I haven't tried them so I Can't speak to them since I haven't played it in a while.

Hmm my advice would be the following then:

    1) Try the EQ2 Free Trial (No CC required)
If you like it play that or find a friend who plays and have them get a buddy code for you to try it for 14 more days on the full game. If you still like it then buy it and play. No CC required, no risk to you.

    2) Try the Lineage II Free Trial (CC Required)
If you like it play that, if not cancel, no money wasted. (Make sure you cancel or it'll automatically bill you when the free trial ends)

    3) Try the Horizons Free Trial (CC Required)
If you like it, play that, if not, cancel, no money wasted. (Make sure you cancel, same as above).

    4) Try WoW
If you like it, play that. If not you are out $50 and I dunno what else you could try... I guess you could try AC1. According to it's fans it's the best thing since sliced bread now.

OK. First, do NOT sign into EQ2. If you like Guildwars, like to be able to make extra characters with no extra cost, and don't want things "Complicated", then you would most likely not enjoy EQ2. The crafting is intricate, not what I would call complicated, but I've found lots of people who think anything approaching any intricacy at all is "complicated". Further, with EQ2 you have a hard-limit of six characters, unless you spend extra money.

WoW? Very easy to play, uber-easy crafting (about as brain-dead as it can get), wide-open world for exploring (except for the maps they didn't finish; and the fact that there are areas that the Devs don't want you to go to that they don't adequately make clear you aren't supposed to go, and if you go there you get in trouble and sometimes banned (Airport; if you explore and climb, purely to "see what's there", which is the point of exploring, you an get to this area, but the Devs have already banned several people and threatened others (including me) for "going where you aren't supposed to")). The downside? No endgame except endless ganking and running the same instance (singular) over and over again. The uber-easy levelling means you'll get to that absent endgame very, very quickly (when I left, it was taking less than two weeks of casual play to level from 1 into the 50s). It's a great experience for a while -- a very short while.

Not really sure what to recommend. I'd probably come down on recommending WoW, it's the easiest to get into, requires the least from the player, and has the easiest crafting so that doesn't come off as "complicated".

UO? No. AC? No. AC2? Not recommending that dead-end never-should-have-been sequel to anyone. EQ1? Hell no. Great exploration, hard crafting, probably too complicated. EQ2? See above. WoW? See above. Rubies of Eventide? Free, easy, just not that interesting. DAOC? You know, DAOC might be another avenue. I would gather from "liking Guildwars" that you like PvP play, and DAOC offers the most awesome PvP environment in their Realm-versus-Realm area. Not too hard to get into.

    Good luck!

Hmmm ya know you are probably right. For some reason I totally spaced DAOC... that IS an awesome game and has probably the best implementation of PVP in an MMORPG that I've seen to date. Think it's got a free trial as well.

Would just like to point out that L2 doesnt have a free trial and that WoW has a recent 14 day free trial distributed with some magazine, cant remmenber the magazines name tho.

DAOC is a good game, but its community has reached the engame for the most part, s you wont see alot of new players running around at lower levels, wich can be a pain if you are into grouping. If the game had an active low level player base i would recommend it.

So it's got a $3 trial :) It's in PC Gamer. I had forgotten they had a trial CD in this month's issue. I thought L2 had a trial..... my mistake.

i downloaded the "free" trial for DAoC & they req credit card. the calling to cancel is a hassle.

Erm... WoW is the same price.
If you can't afford $15 a month you have no business buying video games period :)

It's actually no hassle at all. Just give 'em your credit card number and play for about two weeks. You'll definitely know before 14 days are up if the game is right for you or not. if not, you can just click on a few buttons (i.e. "account info" ..followed by... "cancel subscription"... followed by ..." YES, i'm sure!") and then you're done.

If the game is right for you, the 15 dollars a month is cheap for the entertainment you'll get from it. C'mon 50 cents a day for all the adventure and friendships you'll be encountering.

Personally, it's a great way to hang out with my brothers while we're hundreds of miles apart ::::33::
