If you are not a previous subscriber the f2p starts at jan 17.
It's actually in f2p beta, anyone who already had an existing account (even cancelled) can log in and play for the beta.
Beware the ghost in the machine
Aside form this early entry to F2P, our "legacy" accounts have 3 character slots whereas newly created F2P accounts will have 2. Of all the reductions made on the silver account access to accomodate F2P, the one that has had the most impact on my style of play is the reduction in item storage slots. The move was made to encourage F2P players to buy more storage, but I expect it'll just encourage free players to make multiple accounts.
[I play Ferengi, even if Cryptic may never get around to actually making the race user-playable.]
Very impressed so far. A lot of people complained about the C store but now that the games f2p they had to take absolutely nothing from the main game.
