it just occured to me that in the day and a half i've been playing, i felt i was in a ghost world. and now i understand why.
it's not necessarily the lack of other players running around, but the npc and object interaction is poor.
i mean, there's so many computer screens everywhere in the cities. a few npcs stand around some. why can't we click on the screens and see, oh, i don't know, a useless map of the city? or some advertising for the local cantina? something!
and why can't we click on all the npcs?
i think wow has kind of spoilt us in that department. you can click on critters and npcs and they'll make a sound or something. click to often and they tell you to go away. it's a small thing, but it adds to the flavour.
and speaking of flavour, have you SEEN the mammoth number of social "actions" in this game?
they're awesome!
only, they're not. very few seem to have an animation, and the only one i found which seems to have an audible response is a "clap". how weird is that? they couldn't even think of a joke to tell? wow's stupid jokes were a highlight of the function (sure, for only 5 minutes, but you know... it made discovering them fun).
swtor seems so quiet, like everyone's afraid of making a noise.
it's a library. and i'm kind of happy it doesn't have day/night weather progressions, because i'd be expecting an npc to pop up at night on my screen at some time and tell me it's turning the volume of my blaster down so everyone can sleep.

Personally I find the fact that I am interacting with other people instead of just queueing for another dungeon where people rage quit a lot more rewarding than trying to click on NPCs.

i would agree but with how heavily this game is instanced you don't see a whole lot of people everywhere

If you're talking about the multipage one with the YT link, then I think that was locked because of how potentially flamebaitish the OP was.
That said, I personally saw no reason for it to be locked and was surprised it did get locked.
Hope this one remains open as the OP has elaborated on his post.

I need to take this advice more.
agreed I thought we had some decent debates going on and wasn't sure why it got locked

I dunno last time i checked, when your in the mall or any public place you dont just walk up to random poeople and poke them so they make a noise or somthing. Just saying

I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.

Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.
For me it's just missing small things that make a massive impact.
- Day/night.
- Ambient sounds like crickets or wind, I noticed cars flying over me that were silent too and there's no background noise of chatter or anything in cantinas.
- NPCs rarely make noise, they only seem to be voice overed in cutscenes.
- NPCs do not roam around, they're mostly static.
- The Planets feel very instanced.
- Lack of critters like rabbits or those effects u see in other MMOs like flies or butterflies.
The thing I hate the most is the two faction stations, there is no need for them so get rid of them and move everyone one the planets and the capital cities.
ill repost this from the other thread
go here http://www.askajedi.com/tag/daniel-erickson/ fast forward to 5 min and watch some from there he explains how all those static npcs are loaded client side and were intended to be like this.. personally I think its a really horrible design decision but either way it was intented

Lmao was you in a mute mall though were people mouthed what they said?
Last time I was in a mall there were people walking, talking, converating with each other, and shopping.
If I went to go talk to them they'd say [something], just saying.

sorry to be a spoil sport, but I'm loving this game. Play another game and move along!
It isn't even about clicking on people to hear them say something for me because that can get annoying. I just want to hear background noise of chatter where there should be and I want to see the NPCs talking to eachother, even if it's just chat bubbles. Right now you get random npc talk that happens like one time per planet and the volume stays the same whereever you go, it's meant to be NPCs talking but it doesn't have that impact because of that. NPCs do not animate or anything to show they're talking or singing outside of cutscenes, as seen by the Cantina bands when you pick a singing track.
So we agree right lol?

i love the game too. That said i would like if it had conversatons taken place as u walked by in cities and on fleet. Sorta like they do in the dragon age games.
I still love the game but this would be a cool addition. i dont think its necessary just a nice fluff addition . people complain about the most innane stuff.
no appearance tab when u have a mod system taht gives u a diffrent take on an appearance tab i have 4-5 pieces i bought with commendations already. That are full moddable.
there are things id complain about before i complain about the ambient atmosphere or the appearance tab or day/nite cycles.
considering how much work the ui needs done on it and the lack of races and body types in customization there are things id rather bioware work on before what the guy who made this thread is whining about.
that's kind of what i was saying. i mean, the cities look amazing. i've no complaint. but given the sheer SIZE of the area, it's nice to feel there's some kind of atmosphere. the npcs stay in one place and don't move. nothing moves. nothing seems to want to breathe.
i'd like a little more "colour" was all i meant, because there doesn't seem to be the people there (and if anyone had read my last post i also mention i actually can't talk to anyone because my chatbox doesn't work).
if you loved SWTOR you wouldn't have any complaints about it.
sorry to be a spoil spoil sport, but i didn't say i wasn't enjoying the game. i was saying i think they dropped the ball. with the casual "humour" of the star wars universe, there was an opportunity to fill the cities with wacky npcs and colourful droids with novelty value which would REALLY give it the feel of the star wars universe. it feels like there's a background, but no foreground.
and i won't move along. i like the pewpew.
feel free to discuss the "npc interaction" or object interaction which was what my post was about, though.
he talks about that in the video I linked.. although like I said his "reasons" are pretty lame in my opinion
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/339443/Video-FollowUp-Guide-For-Enhancing-Graphics-and-Performance-in-SWTORSorry-still-Nvidia-Only.html
was hardly a whine. it was more an observation and an expression of surprise.
and, believe me, i'm with you on the "important" things needing changes. i mean, i can't even talk to anyone in-game. my chat function is not functioning at all. makes being in an mmo rather irritating. we've skipped the first few heroics because of it. so, yeah, i'm with you on that.
but in the meantime, you have to admit, there's so much potential for the novelty "character" of the cities to be expressed that you wonder why they didn't. especially considering the instanced feel of the game.
you're right it's a horrible design decision. i'd expect it from your average mmo, but the cool thing about star wars is the way oddball droids do oddball things in the background. or a cantina fight erupts. or something's just happening. it's like the whole "world" was full in the movies. and even if you don't like lucas' tendency to tinker with his films, you have to admit to enjoying the bickering droids and craziness of some aliens. it would have been nice to kind of pounce on the element of fun.
i mean, is it my imagination or did they even got the "these are not the droids you're looking for" line wrong in the social actions?
lol yea it reads
"You Assure everyone that these are certainly not the droids being sought"

I think the best example I've come across on how to create the illusion of a more vibrant world, in an RPG, has to be The Witcher 2. Maybe not all of that would be commercially viable in a AAA MMORPG, but I would at least like to see some of that vibrancy implemented in this supposed AAA MMORPGs.
Thanks for that. Was awesome to watch!

its amazing how much good lighting can add to that living world feeling.. thats another HUGE issue with the direction they went with the graphics.. the shadows with no dynamic night and day cycle are just pointless static blobs with no purpose. Also the static weather they put in is just ridiculous like in the imperial city where its raining 24/7

Just finished playing STO for a couple hours. Did you know that if you go onto one of the stations or especially starfleet Academy (Starfleet Academy looks great, it surprised me) the npcs actually walk around and they wiil also walk up to another npc and feign talking. Also, I'm not talking 1-2 npcs. I'm talking 30-40 npcs walking around making it look busy. The ambience of the areas are top notch. They actually hit it off with the star trek vibe minus the non exploration part and instancing. :P It makes me sad EA/BW could not do the same with SWTOR.
Hell, cryptic even went the cheap route on doing everything for STO.
BOOYAKA!
