I'm just gonna ask something of you people to see what kinda response I get.
Imagine that Mythic proclaims that they again come out with a huge new graphics upgrade release this December for their game "Dark Age of Camelot".
They don't expose many of the details about the games secret surprise graphics upgrade.
The first day it releases in the store, imagine now that you just happen to be cruising the game isle of Walmart and had forgotten that today was its expansions release date. You see the new shiny box and are surprised to see that the price tag is $59.95 for an expansion! (Remember we are pretending here)
...You wanna know why this damn thing is priced so high. You quickly take it to a store clerk to have them double check this price, knowing that all their previous expansions were half this price. The store clerk confirms that it is indeed $59.95 and advises you to check the back cover of the box.
You take a look at the back of the box, and are blown away at the screenshots....
On the screenshots you see that indeed, the graphics quality looks extremely improved again with this game. But this isn't what shocks you the most. In one shot, you see a character getting stabbed with a sword and realistic as hell looking blood spraying out of his chest wound. Blood all over the detailed sword.
...In another screenshot of the Mordred PvP server, you see an axe of one player completely de-heading another player, again with blood realistically spraying straight up into mid air and a look of fear and shock on the face of the head in mid-air!
...Another screenshot shows the realm-wars with a field of body parts, blood and corpses everywhere and players still fighting, and one guy shot by a fireball spell is running around with his body in flames.
...And at the bottom of the box, it states Mature 17+ rating with a warning as to some of the most extreme, realistic gore ever produced in any video game.
Now, I realize that this is fantasy. But just imagine that you saw that expanion box. Would you buy it? How excited or insulted would such a thing make you towards the game?
Just curious.

Man, you have issues.
I didnt left DAoC for graphical reasons. So I would not rejoin DAoC or EQ or any game I left based on the graphics, what matter is the gameplay experience, and graphics are merely the medium.
But STE is deadly serious about EQ! I dunno however with what expension enabled and disabled he was serious.
In facts, they would launch a new EQ server with LDoN and a completely abscence of raiding in any form(and promise that this is a non-raiding server), and full LDoN loot available (not blocking what they did block) with the current graphics, and I would be playing tomorrow. Even if it would cost a $50 to even have access to that server. I assume most folks would need more stuff, like newer graphics or something else however. A non-raiding setting, non-PvP setting, + promise they would keep it that way would be all I would need to start a new toon there and call it home. If solo could be appealing in it own way as well, all the better, but asking that from SoE is like daydreaming.
In facts, CoH would not require much work to meet those needs, but seems like they are heading on another way...to bad for them.

lol Jimmy. Thanks. But I prefer to call it simply a vivid imagination. Besides, you know you'd wanna buy it too Jimmy! Heh.

LOL. No, though it would be quite cool if some game publisher saw it and thought it was a good idea and put it out on the shelves. But I seriously doubt that would happen just because of my thread here. Hehe.
No, I'm just asking a question as to if such a bloody, intense graphical mmo would be cool or not.
And besides, this thread imo has just as much merit as about any of the 42,000 "Game A -vs- Game B" threads. Atleast it is somewhat of an original question, is it not?

Well Irth Online has blood spattering
I didnt like DAoC and not for graphic reasons. So no i wouldnt buy it. It's never a bad idea to add graphic sex or viloence to games or movies. Our children need something to look toward for guidance and ideals.
Make a difference!
What really intersts me about that idea is the implications it would have on game play. Imagine getting in a fight with a say an axe wielding dwarf type. He does massive damage nearly killing you, your arm flies off with your sword in it. He picks up your arm sword and all. And sticks the sword in his belt then backhands you with your own arm. (woo getting carried away)
Anyway now your character doesn't have an arm! and you'd have to walk around with out one until you found a healer or a mechanic or something to get a new arm.
lmfao. That would be cool as hell. 'Tis true gameplay with such morbid graphical combat would make it very interesting if done right and allowing total freedom. Man, that would rock! Good point gattm99.

I'd have to admit that if I saw such screenshots, I would take it to the counter and whip out my wallet without a second thought.
Mebbe they'll come out with DAoC2, with screens similar to your descriptions.
We can only hope
Obviously with all the post POP expansions disabled
Yeah and also imagine the lawsuite angry parents would be filing against them for such explicit screenshots.
I thought DAoC had a graphic update not that long ago eventhough the update was quite feeble. I actually really want this game just to see what all the pvp hype is all about but i live in England and if my sources are correct, they shut down the European forums due to a lot of irate gamers about the lacklustre European support and how North America > Europe came into play. If i can get hold of the American version, then maybe i will give it a shot .
I don't see why morbid, high blood content games are so protected from ever reaching store shelves with movies like "Pieces" and "Chainsaw massacre" and all those stupid "Faces of Death" videos at rental stores everywhere nationwide. Atleast a videogame is a lot more cartoonish looking then seeing what is supposedly real blood, real monkey brains being eaten, etc (Faces of Death content).
And getting way off topic, nobody that is sane watches or plays a graphic or violent video game and then goes and thinks about doing the same things in real life. People say todays cartoons and movies are so much more violent then the good old days. I disagree with this too. More graphic, more swearing, and more sexually graphic, for sure. But are todays movies and cartoons really any more violent then all those old Gun Smoke episodes where cowboys are shooting each other for half the show, and it's also hard to beat the amount of raw violence seen in the old Road Runner cartoons... poor old Wile E Coyote. lol

I'd definately buy it. I've heard such great things about DAoC and tried to get into it numerous times, but I just couldn't. It wasn't just the graphics, though. It was the graphics engine and the interface. So clunky and complicated.
How does catacombs look? I've tried almost all the expansions except one I think, not including that one. Do the graphics play out well? I've seen screenshots, but you know how sometimes screenshots lie.

Hmmm. Sony? SOE? Pssst... Are you reading this? {hint, hint!}
Pssst. $100 a copy is a lot of cash. Pssst. Hehe.
I can see it now. In the newpapers and entertainment type magazines everywhere....
"Sony makes more then 60 million dollars selling 600,000 copies of its "EQ: BloodShed" expansion its first month on shelves and can't keep store shelves stocked with it's highly desired violent expansion, meanwhile copies sell for more then $350 a copy on Ebay, and mad parents protest in BestBuy and EB Games parking lots everywhere!"
Hehe.
By the way, I'd also sport $100 for such a game.

While you're fantasizing about an impossibility, why not just add your favorite supermodel's phone number to the Collector's Addition (unique one in every box, collect them all).
Id prefer to see more content over graphics. But if I saw an expansion like this, I might consider coming back to DAoC. I really want to see a more improved graphics engine that you actually hit the person, not slice through mid air.
Import games from Japan,
They unlike us do not have the Religious right and the Morality police protesting video games, when they should be protesting irresponsible parents. I live in a "suppossedly" free country yet for whatever reason I am unable to buy games with content geared toward me as an Adult off store shelves, I have to import them from other "Less Free" countries.
You would actually be amazed at the quality of alot of import games, honestly graphically speaking alot of them make Us games look like garbage. Of course on the opposite spectrum they have some of the worst games as well, so pick carefully.
I would love to see an MMO that was 17+. Not for the blood or violence or sex that would be involved with the game, but because of what that would say about the community. I know it sounds snobish and elitist, but I would be very happy to not have to worry about language in a game, and to also remove a majority of the immaturity.
As far as censoring of games, dear Lord, don't get me started. I would just like to comment that it's not just the "religious Right" that is cracking down on games. Look no further than Hilary Clinton and her attack on GTA San Andreas. If you ask me, it's time parents did some parenting, instead of expecting regulatory boards to do it for them. Pay attention to your kids, look at the screen every once in a while when they're playing a game. Do a little research online. Info on up and coming games is one of the easiest things to find on the internet. Five minutes of research will tell you whether or not your child should be playing the game. Of course, then you wouldn't be able to ignore you kids even more by filing these foolish and pedantic law suits against the gaming industry.
Umm, MAIV (or whatever) would hop all over it like they did to San Andreas.
