I go to logon tonight and...a QUEUE???? The hell you say!

Well this was unexpected.  There was actually a queue to logon to the Wolfsbane server tonight.

Everyone seems to think that Rift is "dying" so I found this particularly odd.  Has anyone else noticed a queue recently?  Is Rift making a comeback?

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

The game is not maing a comeback.  There are 12 out of 27 dead servers, and another bunch that arent far off.  people are jumping ship from those servers and going to Wolfsbane, as its widely known its the only heavily popuated server in the game (I prefered a server like Faeblight myself).

Same thing happened with EQ2 and AB for a while

  • more people are playing Rift lately. here's a post from another forums talking about it

i'm on alsbeth and a large HK raiding guild just transfered to wolfsbane. so it would contribute to the -0.05 on alsbeth to +0.11 on wolfsbane.

Check the same site today when its *not* factoring in christmas weekend's obvious dead time:

    http://www.riftstatus.net/shards/na/stats

6 servers up, 10 servers down, additional 10 servers that are too dead to go down.  All the up activity clearly does not match all the downward activity so its not just transfers.

    Interesting!  Thanks for the link.

I had actually been unsubbed from Rift for months, but then I played SWTOR and I found the PvP to be lackluster.  It really made me pine for Rift so I wound up resubbing.

I was wondering if there wasn't some more folks like me that decided to resub to Rift because they didn't really like SWTOR but it gave them that "MMORPG-bug" again.

That is kind of funny. I figured this was going to happen eventually so I got off and went to Deepwood. Free x-fers are nifty like that lol

    Hah!

Well, I don't know which one of those is the more accurate measure, and I'm not really interested in Rift's success or failure, I'll just be happy not knowing image.

I just thought it was funny that there was a queue.

Out of curiosity PM, whats your take on merges?  I think it would be healthier for the game (and *especially* healtheir for Wolfsbane) if they bit the bullet and merged shards the old fashioned way.  Not all need merging obviously, but take 3 dead shards and merge em into one medium.

The Wolfsbane issue *will* get worse.

    ok do this

    http://us.battle.net/wow/en/status

Prime time on Sunday count the number of low pop servers. When people stop having this double standard about WoW vs other mmorpg's then yes I will tell Trion to merge.

In Rift if you cry about being on a low pop shard I tell you to pick up and x-fer. Merges were needed in other mmo's because Blizzard charges 25$ to x-fer, NCSoft in Aion charged 25$ to transfers, AND WAR I think charged a transfer fee. I can go check EQ2, but with f2p I am sure they charge to transfer also.

Merges are just a free way of getting a transfer, but what happens when transfers are free?

    1.  One game has almost 50% of its servers low pop (13/27) and only one server above medium, the other doesnt have a single PvE server low pop (well theres an oceanic one, but its not prime time there) and quite a few high pop servers (certainly more than 1 out of every 27)

    2.  The just merge off thing works if you dont have friends and a guild.  If you have both those things, its IMPOSSIBLE to get everyone to transfer together.   Merges are a way of keeping communities together.

    3.  Dont understand the hostility towards the question, it was a fair question.   You brought WoW into the argument which is foolish, as they dont have anywhere close to the population issues Rift has even with their big drop this year.  Their servers are much better off, *and* they didnt close over half of them this year like Rift did.

    4.  If you don't see the issue this process is currently causing Wolfsbane....and transferring off is *not* a solution for mst people.

  • i may be lost but he brought it up because of the time we were looking on the server status. sundays are a bad time for most games. and i have -0.29 for US servers one week ago from right now and most of the time i check it it's been + overall which is really nice to see again. i also have +0.62 for EU servers. so a total gain of +0.33.

about mergers. i'm not a big fan of forced server merges as you have conficts of names. i know it's something that's really petty, but i know some people are really hardcore about player names. free server transfers are a pretty slick idea in my opnion. they allow for server pop to be delt with on its own. some people love to play on low pop servers, some want to play on high pop. i tend to like to sit in the middle just for farming and economy reasons. i think trion is handling the servers fine so far in general. they quickly added in new servers when the need was there, and they did the whole trial server thing and asked people to move when it got grim. the way it's balanced right now seams to work fairly well. with the lfg for warfronts and 5 mans being cross shard there the system has been working itself out.

edit: also check out the population trends. very happy to see this gaining again.

That is what happens when servers don't handle over 1200 people at 1 time and you got server mergers,  just go look at the website for rifts own server status page, not 1 server is high you'll be lucky too see 3 servers at medium and the rest are low, just go througout the day and you'll be lucky to ever see a high server and anymore then 3 medium servers in the NA shard. Not to mention most people are not taking into account how many servers Rift has actually had to shutdown just to get other servers to medium (which is under 1000 people). Low population is kinda decieving cause there is nothing lower then low if a server is still up, 0 people are considered low on the status page.

I do hope RIFT can hold its own. I couldnt hang on to it because i was already playing 3 other mmos, but for the little i saw and played, but most important from what i have read so far, i have no doubt that it is one of the most solid and well crafted mmorpg in existence.

Even if it loses a couple of servers and the rest get merged, i do think they still have a good sub player base to go on and improve the game.

3 med pop servers in NA right now and it's 11am PST lol. check it on a reset or during the evenings. server size is just fine imo. plaenty of people on to do anything and everything the game has to offer. queue times are fine, and invasions are dealt with. hundreds of players hitting up the last bosses of the EI events. trion take a dump in your food or something? how's life under your troll bridge bro? Rift is doin just fine and has seen a growth in players from last month.

second time today i've seen you trollin the rift sub section talkin about crap you have no idea about. i wanna be grumpy too!

While he was exaggerating, hes no more off base than your everything is fine post.  As of right now, in the heart of primetime (9pm east), 2/3 of Rfts NA servers have less than 400 people playing.

And no, Rift has *not* seen a growth of players since last month.  http://www.riftstatus.net/shards/na/trends shows otherwise.

It baffles me how so many people dont admit there is a population issue, even PM admits this.  Rift isnt going to go f2p or anything like that, but its cearly headed to niche status , which isnt necessarily a bad place to be.

it shows a pop increase from 50% to 80% of low, but the others are lookin up. considering most are server transfers i think it's working out just fine. they really need to stop the flow into wolfsbane though. people getting pissed off there. 10 med and 1 high pop isn't too bad at all for a tues before reset. it use to be a lot worse. almost all low pop and a couple med pop.
