How about giving Lineage 2 a try? A Lineage 2 Guide by merx

Righto. This game recived really bad press. Cus it was reviewed by everybody in beta, before Chronicle 1 (the official start of the game) was even released.

The Recent Chronicle 3 "Rise of Darkness" has really made the game alot better. Exp has been upped. And there are now group exp bonus' which encourage grouping.

In addition to that, there is a new contest system woven into the game. Lords of Dawn vs. The army of Dusk. Every 2 weeks players have to sign up for a side, then go to necropolis' and catacombs. Where players will find x4 hp mobs with x4 xp. They have to then kill the mobs which drop seal stones. These seal stones when handed in contribute to the score of each side. The side with the most stone points and the most festival points (a place where 9 players have to battle mega hard npcs for as long as they can before they die.) wins.

The bonus for winning is that only they can enter the Catacombs and Necropoli. And also use Ancient adena to upgrade their weapons, buy enchant scrolls etc.

Lineage 2 is also heavily group-play based. And you are activly encouraged to group up and use different classes to make the perfect group.

Enough of the gameplay changes, lets take a look at the races.

Humans
Humans are the middle way class, they make good tanks, archers and nukers.

The best 2 human PvP classes are the Hawkeye (Archer) and the Gladiator (Dual Swords).

Also have a Prophet and a Bishop (Buffer,Healer) which are 2 of the best support characters in the game.

Basic Characteristic: Humans are well-balanced in all of their characteristics.

Elf
Elves do good damage. And are also quick. Silver Ranger (Archer) and Spellsinger (Nuker) are extremely good classes. Spellsinger is widley regarded as the best nuker in the game as it casts the fastest, and runs the fastest.

Also have a SwordSinger, who can perform 3 minute songs that provide "mega buffs" which stack ontop of Prophet buffs.

Basic Characteristics: Elves are wise and quick-witted. They are fast in attack, movement and casting speeds. They also have superior marksmanship skills and higher evasion ratings (ER). However, their attack strength is inferior to that of other races.

Dark Elf
Dark Elves do alot of damage, but cannot take much of a beating. Abyss Walker (Dagger) and Spellhowler (Nuker) are good classes in both PvE and PvP.

Also the Blade Dancer can perform 3 minute dances that provide "mega buffs" which stack ontop of Prophet buffs.

Characteristics of basic parameters: Since they possess high STR and INT, the Dark Elven attack capability is high.

Orc
Good Orc classes are the Tyrant who uses metal claws as weapons, and also their mystics. The mystics dont have any real offensive spells, but they are excellent buffers who can buff a whole party OR Alliance in 1 click of a button.

Basic Characteristics: Orcs have superior physical strength, with high maximum HP and MP levels. They also have a fast recovery speed. However, they are not quick of foot and they have slow movement, attack, and casting speeds. They have low marksmanship and ER as well.

Dwarf
Dwarfs are the only race that can make items, and use its spoil skill to optain extra materials and items from a mob. Dwarfs are hard as nails.

Basic Characteristics: Overall, Dwarves do not have any distinguishing features other than superior physical strength.

So thats the races.

The game has a brilliant clan/ally system aswel. Where a clan is limited to levels and members. http://lineage.fansites.ru/clan_list.html Also clans and alliances can have their own "tags" which display above a characters head. Great for pvp so you know who is your enemy or friend.

The Teon (euro server) has a varied community, lets put it that way. And last month you could have cut the tension with a knife. And somebody did. A small incident of pvp turned into 5 alliances warring with each other. Imagine 600-700 players fighting each other whenever they saw their enemy. It was madness.

Items, armour etc.
Armour, weapons and player models in this game look fantastic. And there are more weapons in the sword category, than there is in all of mir 3s weapons!

Music
Music in the game is performed by critically acclaimed composer Bill Brown. The music provides the idea soundtrack and mood for every situation. Sample some of it from the "Music" link I provided. Try "Call of Destiny" it gets good half way through.

Where to buy
I reccomend you buy the Game and the gamecard. This will give you 1 month + 2 months from the gamecard. Otherwise you will have to use a credit card to the tune of Visa or Mastercard. Solo and Switch are avaliable aswel. But you need to set up your credit card before you can activate your account. If you get a game card, you do not. And it comes to just under £30 so its the price of a normal game anyway.

Game
Time Card

You can buy a CD key online but it costs you £29.99 and it only gives you 1 month. So buying from play is alot cheaper.

Lineage 2 is an excellent game. Ignore the out of date reviews and you do not have a valid opinion on the game if you have not played the latest Chronicle.

Yep thats why I am hesitant to try out the game. PvP and all sounds great, but I cant stand getting ganked over and over. If the ganking is half as bad as it sounds, then thats too much ganking for me.

The low level areas now have guards to protect characters. So they at least fixed that. But the farmers still ruin the game in higher levels.

I am still trying to figure out how to "give it a try" as they have opted out of any form of trial or buddy key system...

"What is it I have against Microsoft, you ask? Well, you know how you feel when you wait for an MMO to come out and when it does you feel like you've paid to play it's beta test for another 6-9 months before anything even thinks of working the way it should? Being a network engineer you feel that way about anything Microsoft puts out."

Lineage II has only two marketable features.

Tits and Ass. I honestly am not suprised at its popularity among the younger male crowd being the character models have triple the polygon count in those areas, yet the rest of the character model is simplistic. It is the only MMORPG I am aware of that has a Nude patch for unofficially, and Unless I am mistaken they came out with a bikini patch officially, it was at a minimum unofficial. All in all it was rather pathetic.

I played it through C1 before I got disgusted with it,

Gameplay is non existant, Balance is non existant, The leveling grind is so rediculous that It spurred me under one of my alter names to create one of the most popular leveling bots in the early months of the game simply because the leveling curve disgusted me so much. ( btw that bot is long gone in retrospect it was rather immature and spiteful ) The community at that time was trash, mostly because of its only two marketable features, I sincerely doubt it has gotten much better.

Lineage 2 is honestly one of the only mmorpgs that I simply will not say anything nice about, simply because in several months of play I never found a single thing that warranted continuation of the game.

The problem with Lineage 2 is not the game itself, it s the comunity.
Gankers, Gankers and more Gankers..........ah.........and lots of Bots too.
The PVP system is the worst ever seen in any MMO.
No thanks, I will pass on this one.

How ironic. The botter talks of a terrible community. image

LII is an interesting and IMHO underrated game. It has a different style them most other MMORPGS out there and won't appeal to everyone, but the fact that it is currently one of the most successful games in terms of subscriptions shows that it must be doing something right. (It's either first or second, I can't remember which) Though it has both, LII doesn't revolve around either crafting or questing, personally I can take or leave crafting and after cutting my teeth on the first Lineage I've found quests in MMORPGs a little strange and constricting, but obviously others love these aspects and so Lineage II probably isn't for them. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

LII is a game that revolves around freedom, exploration, forging friendships and faction fighting. The character customisation is generally horrendous I agree, though ironically you get more freedom in how your character evolves then you get in, say, EQII. The grind is mammoth, but I like that. I'd hate to play a game that could be completed in a month or two. What matters is whether I am having fun, not what level I am. I've found the community decent, like most MMORPGs you'll find both mature people and idiotic trolls, and just about every other hue in between, I've yet to be ganked sadly... image

I played L2 for several months.
The ganking isnt so bad, I'd been one-shot killed so many times I wouldnt even notice it anymore. Totaly desensitized.
I never even treated it like a game. It was more like the zen of nothing. I would sit there thinking about lifes mysteries....and occasionaly reach over and press a button (thus demonstrating the complexity of the "game"). It was alot like fishing, very quiet and introspective.
I never considered it a game. Its an actionless activity.

If all online games would be setup in internet cafes then a lot more would have high pops like L2 has.

If you only take into account european or north american subscribers, L2 would have one of the lowest playerabases, the vast majority of the subscribers are south Korean, L2 is sucessfull there becasue it caters very much to the South Korean ideal of mmorpg´s, massive grinds, competitive pvp, intensive item based game, most of that is not much apealing to westerners in my view.

And i personaly have to disagree about the grind in mmorpg´s, grind doesnt equal freedom of play or a game beeing easy or chalenging, grinding mobs non stop for exp udring hours on end is a very poor game mechanic, utilized by companies incapable of producing quality content for their mmorpg´s, so they rely on grinding, wich is a mediocre tactic. That is why i say L2 is a poor game at best, its gfx are its strongest point, besides that, the gameplay speaks for itself, grind grind grind, nothing more... nothing less.

I played it in Beta, it was boring and had a horrendous grind but I figured "hey it'll get better" and a friend of mine and I went ahead and bought it.

Within 2 months we'd both quit and cancelled our subscriptions.

    The game was boring
    monotonous
felt like a job, not a game
PVP was ok but no real point to it other than bragging rights.
Castle sieges were 'ok' but since there is no real point to them (other than the sake of doing them) kind of ho-hum after awhile. Frankly taking a fort in DAOC was a lot more exciting.
    Riddled with farmers and bots

I have heard that the grind has been reduced but none of the other problems with the game have been adressed. There's no questing system to speak of. The content is thin, at best, compared to other games and the "crafting" system is an absolute joke.

Only way I would even consider re-trying L2 is if they offer a free trial.

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

    Still in: A couple Betas

Lineage 2 is IMO the worst MMO ever made...

    - Worst economy ever. It almost caters to gold farmers.

    - Horrid grind. Yes it is on par with EQ1, but there is nothing to do beside gank lowbies and fight mobs wandering around (quests are almost non-exsistent).

    - Character creation just plain sucks. 2 faces and 3 hairstyles per race....and NO Helm graphics (though this may have changed since i played)

    - Terrible community. Never before have i seen an MMO so full of racist, immature ppl in my MMO life (10 years and counting)

As to the fact that this game received alot of bad reviews in chronicle 1. that's the game dev's own damn fault. I can never stress this enough:

DON'T RELEASE A HALF-ASSED, UNFINISHED PRODUCT! It will just get ripped apart by the community....

Even if this game was 200% better than it was when i played it, it still sucks. image

Someone already said it, but i will repeat the concept.
95% of L2 players are Koreans. Western people don't like this kind of games.
There is not mental stimulation just click n' go, no PVE elements, really bad PVP, very immature and lame community, plenty of Bots and the Economy is screwd up due in part by the fact that the devs had thought to make basic eqipment so expensive that it can't be bought by honest means, therefore people turn to Bots, which is the only way to buy some decent equipment.
Let s not forget about the grind. I thought that EQ was the best you can get, but guess what........ L2 beat it by a long way.

What is positive about this game? Go and figure...........
