I don't know where this 200k subs number is coming from, does anybody have a source? I think it's more around 100k subs, seeing how Rift in Xfire, Steam as well as Raptr is currently somewhat under 10% of what the player numbers and hours were in March last year.
Still a nice number, MMO's like AC and AoC did alright for a long time with player numbers like that.

and what do you base your figure on..by that i mean there are no stats to back any numbers up..they probably made there money back off release..given that it sold a couple of million or maybe less..and its just opened a load of servers up in russia i beleive.i think anywhere near your figure and more they are making money off this game..which is what it deserves for all the hard work trion have put into this game.i play this game mainly part time due to lack of content..but its still a fun game nontheless.your figure maybe right or maybe wrong..i think its one of those games you pop back to when something new pops up..same as lotro really.
200k is a great number for a sub only themepark i think they are doing just fine. I would expect tho that since they have a heavy respect for their players that they might make some much needed improvements to their game. Not because their game is terrible but because the playerbase is changing for all mmos. They should make a few updates that have features that GW2 will have at launch to keep up and i think they will be able to because the Rift team is very good at fast updates with content, and to knowing what their players want. They can do it it'll just take a little time. Things i'm talking about are sidekicking in dungeons, rift content scaling, cosmetics, exploration with rewards. (now some of these may have been implemented because i haven't kept up with patch notes as i'm not a player but i stand by my stance that all games will eventually have to keep up if they want to remain competative and doing so will require a few patches to their ui)
There isn't a thing wrong with Rift now it's a good game it just won't capture my eye and people like me who upon seeing the features in GW2 will here on out be more demanding on the development teams of every mmo because if a small company like Anet can do this then big money gaming companies had better step up.
i think its highly unlikely that Rift has so few subs, and as the source is dodgy, the OP's premise is untenable. perhaps if they can link some actual data from a reliable source, they might gain a bit more credibility.. so im calling BS on this one.
the only thing rift lacks is content..has far as polish goes..i dont remember a more polished game release..maybe wrong.one thing you cant accuse trion of is not trying something different.i thought the rifts were a great idea, but the problem is they do become tiresome.more normal content and less rifts would be nice..but i guess thats why they call it rift hehe.
Lol, not enough content! There is not a MMORPG ever released to have as much content at this stage in its life, it has probably already surpassed most games released. And the rate they are giving us new stuff is phenomenal!
i doubt you got to 50 by saying this...
Also population does always drop a bit over xmas period in most games, although population is not as good as it once was, from what i can tell over the last week its at least doubled with online players.

That's why I asked if anybody had a valid source, else it's all just speculations. I was wondering about what the current numbers were too, purely out curiosity, so I was surprised when the OP mentioned 200k subs.
As for where my guessing estimation is coming from:
It's fair to say that Rift didn't reach 1 million players in March, seeing how Trion announced a couple of months later that they were approaching 1 million sales, I'd go with the estimations of some that they were probably around 800-850k sales in March.
Now here's the guessing part: surprisingly enough, Rift shows a fairly consistent picture when it comes to its player activity (hrs, players) over 3 tools. In Steam as well as Xfire as well as Raptr, Rift's numbers show to be around 10% or somewhat under that of what the numbers were in the March month. That's why my estimation of around 100k.

it's a very good game for what it is; if i weren't playing sweater it's what i'd be playing, at least for my themepark.

This has been a rough month for Rift and perception is a bitch and the idea that Rift is dying and WoW is only alternative I tend to find pretty damn hilarious. Not to be rude here. but we do not want some of the people who left back. They made one hell of a scene on the way out, so let them fester on the TOR forums qq'n.
Give it a month or so for people to burn up all the content in SWTOR and realize it actually has significantly less to do than Rift.
And Bioware is going to be hard pressed to match the depth, frequency, and quality of updates that Trion has become known for.
Trion has done an incredible job of releasing new content and fixing things so far. There have already been several World events. They have added new dungeons for 10's and 20's, Master Modes, new PvP warfronts, new mounts, cosmetic armor, and entire new zones like Ember Isle. The list just goes on and on. And the game hasn't been out a year yet.
I've been playing MMO's since EQ1, I have never played a game who's developers were as communicative and responsive to their community as Trion.
I bought SWTOR on a whim, shortly before release, just to see what all the noise was about. I have to be honest, it was a lot of fun at first. But it is nowhere near as deep as Rift and it is just not in the same league in terms of quality. It's a bunch of instances, with pre-defined routes and pretty claustrophobic maps, and a whole hell of a lot of movies and cutscenes. I felt like I was playing a single player RPG with other players around, online. It's fun, but it reminded me of City of Heroes with a Star Wars theme.
I think games like Rift will hold people's interest longer. But a lot of today's players really just want to "beat the game" and move on. SWTOR should be perfect for that. Play it, get to max cap, and jump to the next big thing when it arrives.
People should realy learn to forget two things when commenting these things:
1. WoW and it's numbers. It's a freak.
2. Box Sales.
Howering around 100k is decent number. Nothing to be ashamed for. They are missing perspective 100k is still around 12 million of revenue per year only from subs, maybe tad less.
I'm sorry, but i call bullshit on 200k number being anywhere near that, and that has to be low. There is no way you're going to convince me that from mid august to now that they've lost 80% or more of their playerbase.
I think we'll never know how much subs or players Rift currently really has, since I don't see Trion reveal those numbers anywhere in the short term. So it'll always be guesswork. However, we do know some stuff:
- that Rift just as other MMO's peaked in its launch month, so Rift will very likely never had more than 800-850k subs/player at the same time since they announced approaching 1 million months later.
- in Xfire, Raptr and Steam, in all three Rift shows almost the exact same pattern which would be very unlikely if those tools would be hugely inaccurate (then the percentages would vary more wildly from eachother). And this pattern or trend is that Rift in all 3 shows like somewhat below 10% the number of players/hours that it had in the launch month.
I'd say this would provide a fairly sufficient base for making educated guesses, but in the end they're still just estimations and speculation, and we'll never know the actual numbers unless a company chooses to reveal them.
While it is impossible to say how many subs Rift has, the fact that Trion doesn't release the figure pretty much shows they aren't proud of the number. I'm guessing if the were higher than EVE's they'd be bragging about it so 200K might be a decent estimate.

what about the 8 months of decline prior to december? People seem to conveniently leave that out and imply that SWTOR or holidays are the reason why Rift has declined.. Its not like Rift was doing so well in early december.
Its far beyond MMO hoppers. Rifts generic presentation and less than spectacular combat have made it a niche game.
Rift is the Yngwie Malmsteen of MMORPGs. Techncally impressive but devoid of soul.
Maybe you guys remember that older interview in which they stated that it is the 2nd biggest MMORPG in the west.
Someone with access to the Rift-forums could ask there if that is still the case -or write a mail to Scott H directly.
#2 MMO in the west would have been about 300k subs (gve or take depending how any EVE subs are from the east). Certainly not a stretch to thin they lost 1/3 subs inbetween

It no less generic then SWTOR and the combat is much more fluid. Ahh.... you see what I did there? After I read that you think TOR has the most responsive fluid combat in any mmo. This is laughable imo, but to each their own. I'm enjoying Rift and will continue to do so with my annual sub. As long as I can find groups and continue to raid with my guild I don't care how many people are playing. Although, I play on Wolfsbane and have to wait in a queue to get on so at least on my server the population is fine.

There is honestly no way to tell. If you would of asked me days ago if EU was dead I would have said yes. Check the numbers yesterday and practically every server was medium pop and a few were running at high.
The difference between War, Aion, and Rift is with Rift if I hate something there is a damn good chance what I hate will be fixed by next month. Especially when it comes to FOTM classes. This is not 6 months of the pain train waiting for a nerf. The bad part about the dev pace is they update classes faster as FOTM pwnage specs pop up.

If its true (which is possible) it will make LOTRO and EQ2 more successful games after 1 year then Rift.
I dont trust that its true, but wouldnt be shocking. Rift as it stands now is a niche game.
