Hello,
I hope my question isn't too general but I am looking for a MMORPG which fits me. I played WoW (Classic+Crusade) and Warhammer Online (couple of months). I really liked the PVP ideas of WAR but it got boring really fast; my realm was poorly populated. And that's also the most important criterion for the new MMO. I want there to be people I can play with. It doesn't have to be the latest game but it shouldnt be too oldschool (2D) either.
The first thing I did when I came to this site was to check the most popular MMO games of course. Rift leapt to my eye. It seems kind of a WoW rip off (which doesn't matter much to me) but I read that many people find it too shallow. And I want my MMO to be deep at least in some aspects of gameplay. It should be playable for casualgamers though because I work and I don't have that much time. I really like PVP but I also like some good dungeon fights. I really don't care about the setting although I prefer fantasy. As I said in the beginning: all I want to know is if there are some good MMOs out there with at least enough people to build the afterwork-group and rape some other player's/NPC's ass.

PS: Don't tell me about SW:TOR.
First: This one is a shame for the Star Wars movies. And I'm counting from four to six here.
Second: It appears to me Bioware produced a not-too-bad offline RPG with the possibilty to "play" with other people. Can't really see the MMO aspect in the game. To demand 13$ per month seems criminal to me.

I think you mean movies 1 - 3 not 4 - 6. Remember 4 - 6 was released first in the 70s and 1 - 3 are the "new" ones.

Well I feel sorry for you if you think the new Star Wars movies are the better ones. George should've stayed away from the franchise.
Hey, thanks for the tip. I hope to get access to beta.
Aion is going free-to-play in a month
might want to look into that
Could look at planetside 2, its an MMOFPS though.
It will have massive PvP, larger than WAR, and the developers have their head screwed on unlike mythic when designing, theres resources, hex grids, like 8 bases per map..which are like 30x the size of Caspian border, the whole thing sounds good.
It is casual friendly, been an FPS, skill matters, not playtime, though with more time spent playing you will have more unlocks and different / more specialised roles, maybe upto 20% more power than a freshling.

TRF - GM - GW2, PS2, WAR, AION, Rift, WoW, WOT....etc...
Future Crew - High Council. Planetside 1 & 2.
No No No, I do not like 1 - 3. I like 4 - 6.
"First: This one is a shame for the Star Wars movies. And I'm counting from four to six here."
I was making the comment on this part of your first post. I read it wrong and I thought you were shaming four to six here.

Ah, thanks for the heads up. I'll try. But heard that Aion is kind of farm-to-death. =/
Hm, I never tried a MMOFPS. Could be worth a look. How is the damage system? RPG-like or does it have a hitbox? Thanks for the quick answear btw.
Ah, no problem man. Maybe it was just my poor use of words.
First off, kudos to you for knowing what star wars used to be compared to rubbish it has become. Secondly, Planetside 2 is the latter, that is hitboxes. Think of it like any regular first person shooter that would not normally have rpg elements, and NOT like borderlands. It, too, has just started accepting beta registration http://www.planetside2.com/ so at least give it a look to see if you'd be interested.
As for suggesting an MMO i'm at a loss with you. I currently am subscribed to nothing, but am hopeful for some new IP's coming out.
Have you seen the trailer for the new Ridley Scott movie Prometheus? It's basically Alien with faster cuts and CGI - for all the little kids. WTF? Nowadays it's the same with every big franchise. How to get the big money? Go the easy way and take everything that is successfull and copy it. Because of that we see a stagnation in the whole media industry - music, movies and sadly also the games. It's a sad, greedy world we live in.
Planetside 2 isnt out yet . ..
I recommend trying Darkfall if you have a lot of time on your hands as it can be the most epic MMORPG experience (well I guess every game can be in its own way but this one can provide an adrenaline rush unlike the others).

Thanks Sid. I'll look into that.
So no one's going for Rift? Is it really that bad?
I did 1-50 in Rift when it first came out. But because I had just come from WoW it looked like all the same endgame stuff, so I ended up leaving. However re-reading your initial post it sounds like you never experienced the PvE endgame of WoTLK or Cataclysm, which imo WoTLK was the peak of PvE in WoW (those from the original may disagree with the original 40man MC... but that was very hardcore PvE). So maybe Rift would be fine for you, I just wouldn't recommend it if you were coming right from WoW.
As far as other games, I have heard Aion is much less grindy than it was on release (again I playted Aion at release and yes it was grindy then). Similar to warhammer's pvp... you might have difficulty there, mainly because it has been the only game recently release which takes Western style gameplay coupled with Eastern style PvP.
What do I mean by this? Western games focus on the self, for pvp think the U.S's "Army of One" for the East, the laughing comeback to the US's Army of One, is F that, we have the Army of One Billion. So Western games focus on small-scale combat (you are the hero) while Eastern games focus on large-scale combat (you are one of many) Warhammer was an anomaly to an extent, and its difficult to find good Western games that use Eastern PvP gameplay mechanics.
Also sounds like you really enjoy open-world pvp. You could ask around about the PvP servers for games like Runes of Magic, but I haven't had much positive experiences with true open pvp and non RvR. EVE Online also if you are willing to leave the world of fantasy behind.
Hope this all helps.
**Edit** If Aion's grind is reduced since release I would say it fits your bill nicely.
"They essentially want to say 'Correlation proves Causation' when it's just not true." - Sovrath
Aion's grind has been reduced again and again but from what I hear you still shouldn't hope to get to maxlevel in under half a year if you have a normal work schedule. The problem is also not only the raw time it takes to level to 50... or 60 I think is the max now. The problem is that after around level 30 it feels extremely slow and you have to play for what feels like ages until you get a new skill or mechanic.
Aion would be worth a look though anyway because its freetoplay (so you can test it without much ado) and because it does have a real open world pvp. Be warned though that as someone stated already the PVP in Aion is really groupbased. You enter battle with a premade raidgroup. There is nothing casual about it (hunting in the low level pvp areas seldom works).
I never played EVE but as for openworld (sandbox) and openworld PVP this game is probably the only valid contender since everything else is either boring and dieing (Warhammer) or still buggy and bulky (Darkfall and Mortal).
As for Rift: Its really a great game and ideal for the casual gamer. It does have a mechanic that if you read about it looks like a copy of WoW but it feels different, especially in pvp since the character skill system is so vast that you never know what your opponent can come up with.
Apart from the new Emberisland Zone though the pvp is mainly instanced, but you can pretty much queue at any time for any BG and be invited in a matter of minutes. If you like fiddling with class specs and don't depend on a 100% focus on open PVP then Rift definitely is your game. The problem with Rift is that its world has nothing iconic. You can't really connect to the world but as a game its amazingly great.
