No Gold Sellers..

stragen001stragen001 Member UncommonPosts: 1,720

Has anyone seen any gold sellers in SWTOR yet? Ive been in a few MMO launches, and normally after a week or so, often even less, they are all over the general chat and even with liberal application of /ignore and /report they get very annoying......but I havent seen a single one in SWTOR yet!

This is a good thing™

Is it just me being lucky, or are the US servers full of gold sellers(im on EU) or have Bioware somehow found a magical way to stop gold farmers that all the other MMOs didnt?

If they have, my hats off to them for a job well done. Bots and Gold spammers were always an immersion breaker for me in any game.

In game mails I can handle... just delete them and report spam. Its when its all over the chat channels that annoys me, which doesnt seem to be happening in SWTOR for some reason

I actually got my first whisper yesterday from a seller.

It is so stupidly easy to make money in this game I have no idea why anyone would even consider it.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Maybe even the rmt spammers know the game is going to flop? so they aren't wasting the resources to bother with spamming in it? I notice the more gold spammers a game has the more popular it is, strange I know but it proves to be true in most cases. I'd like swtor to do ok, but I don't think its going too since its bascally a single player game with little to no replay value. Most replay u can get well sort of since they all go to the same planets is making 1 rep and 1 sith char, after that the game really offers 0 reason to play anymore. if I had to say it, I'd say swtor is worse than most single player games in that respect. From what I hear though the player population is dropping massivly lately, which is a bad sign if its losing alot of players already during the included month.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

No Gold selling mail IR whisper yet. I play in a RP server probably that's the reason. I still remember seeing gold sellers in general chat the first day of Rift.

BioWare must be doing something about it or it doesn't make sense for me.
  • TheLizardbonesTheLizardbones Member CommonPosts: 10,910

I've had one whisper, which I reported and ignored. Since then, nothing.

The only people I really see wanting to buy gold are people leveling their first toon in either faction. There's a lot of stuff that you could buy, but don't have enough money to get with a max level toon to fund it. Which is probably why that stuff is there...so you have something to spend your max level toon's money on.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

They stopped the Gold Seller!  They must be good!

    = Fallacy.

Gold Farmers are a business.  As a business they only exist where they can make a profit.

    That means that there must be;

a high demand for gold / high end gear

    a lot of (potential) customers

customers that have difficulty obtaining gold / high end gear due to rarity

and / or the fact that the time / earning ratio is beyond what most players are prepared to tolerate.

finally - powerleveling services exist when the journey to end game is too tedious for customers and the end game is considered worthwhile.

The trick to removing Gold Farmers is to make their business non profitable.

    Developers can do that by;

making a crap game (drives away customers)

making a crap economy (if everyone can make an easy profit and buy everything they want - why would they need more?)

making gear generic and easy to get.

making the amount of time taken to earn money low enough (for the money earnt) that players are happy to grid for cash themselves.

making the journey to max level enjoyable

having no end game so having no demand.

Which of those apply in this case?

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.

Yep, same for me..I've had one in-game email and that is it.  No chat spam, private messages, anything.  This is amazingly better than the last EA MMO I played, Warhammer Online.  WAR was riddled with gold seller spam when it came out.  I even got spam in that game when there were only a few servers left.  Probably none now lol.

Not sure how they are preventing it tbh.  Maybe the $60 price tag is detering them somewhat.  They use stolen credit cards to buy keys to the game anyways, but maybe they can't even get off the ground.  Whatever EA/Bioware are doing I am happy.

Iv gotten a few emails from gold sellers but just reported them as spam and moved along. Saying that, once there is a free trial option for SWTOR the email spam will really kick into gear I reckon.

    This is also untrue.

Maybe a small proportion do.  But, in the majority of cases they use legitimate accounts.

    But go on... please continue.

Your next line is "they are ALL Korean..."

In fact - in many cases they are people like you and me - even our friends and guildies.

Did you ever wonder how many people decide to stop playing a game and before they cancel their sub contact a gold seller to see if they can sell their account / gold / gear?

A lot of commercial gold selling outfits use stolen credit cards to purchase game keys to get access to the game once their account are locked.  This is true.  Do they all?  No, but I didn't say that, you just put those words in my mouth.

Oh and I am a racist now?  Damn, relax mr. internet dude.  Go play a game.

Why would anyone need to buy credits ??   i only did  the quests and sold all the loot i didnt need ...  at

level 25 when it was time for mount i had around 80 000 credits  without effort. Maybe the goldsellers

realised theres no need for them ....

Sorry - didn't mean you were being racist.

No.  You are stereotyping.  I bet you can't back that up at all.  There has been more and more written about gold sellers lately - and a lot of the things we thought we knew has turned out to be not quite so true.

And I think you believe a little too much of what Devs say.

    "Goldsellers are ruining our economy!!!111!!!1!11!!1!!"

Nope.  Your economy was flawed to begin with.

Look - balancing a game economy is hard - I am not trying to say that game devolopers have an easy job getting it right (and even more importantly keeping it right - when they add items and expansions) but simply blaming gold sellers for all the issues is a cop out.

Game economies suffer from things that real economies don't.  They lack 'sinks' in many cases - simply because players log out and may not log in again for days / weeks / months... and they don't expect to come back to a naked / broke / starved / homeless avatar.

But in any case (drifting off topic there) - always remember gold sellers are a business.  They are there to make a profit.

No profit = no gold sellers.

If you know where to look it is already possible to buy Swtor's credits easily (there is no way to totally eradicate it) but still EA / BW keep it nicely contained and for that I actually congratulate them even if I don't play game myself. (I have some colleagues who play so I know what is happening there ).

Think they might do best job of minimizing / containing gold sellers of all themeparks atm.

This game is so bad.  How bad is it?  Its so bad that even the gold farmers wont play it.

Maybe JUST maybe they have designed an econmy that isnt dependent on large amounts of in game currency and the items that you really need can only obtained buy earning them via raiding or PVP.

Nah it cant be, its just that the gold farmers hate this game too........

They haven't had time to compromise accounts for those advertisements.  They either advert on free trials, which don't exist in TOR, or steal accounts and use them for advertising.

I'd go with this statement, likely it just isn't that profitable for gold sellers to operate due to the game's design/economy.

Contrast that with L2 that I'm currently playing and Gold spamming is rampant, (I think NCSoft gets a cut) but of course, Adena is still a very vital and necessary commodity so the demand feeds the supply.
