Good game - but why no world pvp?

Overall, I am liking the game much more than I thought I would. Lots to do, inteersting world... decent crafting, fun battlegrounds etc etc

My one overwhelming question, however, is why is world pvp so ignored?

I am level 30, and yet to see a player from the opposite faction in the world. This means I have spent many hours in a Star Wars game with no, well, um. star wars.

Why would they not create world pvp objectives during leveling? Is it that they were scared by the problems in WAR?

Seems to be that this would be an obvious source of fun in the game.

The rest of the game is - within its obvious boundaries - top notch.

If you explore the map, you will certainly come across 'enemy' players. You can get involved with some pretty good fights.

The problem is that there is no incentive to seek out fights - maybe this will get resolved with PvP ranking tables, but who knows.

I just finished Tatooine, which was much more entertaining than Nar Shaddaar.

Had my first world pvp encounters... but pretty limited.

I was delighted to discover there is also a FFA zone, but with nothing inside it to fight for... as a result, it was deserted.

Seems this may be something they develop later.

I have to ask.  Are you on a PvP server?  My reason is that even on the PvE server I am on the PvP is running both in world and in BGs.  So I have to assume that a PvP server would have much more going on.  I will say this though, it isn't until about your third or fourth world that it starts hopping PvP wise.

My sentiments as well. There has to be a focus for  developing a character.....well beyoond  nice pve content....and there isn't.Realm vs Realm conflict screams in your face to be in the game....and its not even being discussed by the devs. I see another RIFT in the making and the game could have been so much more.

Seeing enemy players is almost inevitable on Tatooine.  Some missions share areas, and even nodes in some cases.

As far as world PvP goes, the things which are missing from TOR that exist in WoW are mostly the things that I don't like in WoW.  Quest givers mostly off limits from being attacked via green or exhaustion zones is a big positive in my book.  In WoW, little was more obnoxious than a bunch of horde douches wiping Goldshire over and over again so that low levels can't accept/complete quests... and that's on the PVE servers!

    Good riddance to that.

Leveling in this game really is Great and Entertaining. Its when you finally reach 50 thats when the game starts going down hills.

Because you are enjoying the PVE leveling process, TOR has Punished you from Warfronts, especially when the new patches tomorrow, you will be too far behind everyone that you will barely make a dint ( unless you are either a Smuggler or Agent ) And with the faction imbalance, good luck finishing your Weekly and Daily on Illum. Atleast in PVE Operations and Hard Mode FP, you will still be able to enjoy yourself.

But after you are plagued by the Current Operation and FP bugs, I just hope you have the patience of sticking with it as you wait a week for it to reset so you can try it again.

I am still subbed, but changed from 6 month to 1 month because with the way they are patching the game, and the apparent imbalances of the factions its just hard imagining that it will all get fixed in 6 months.

I'm on 2 different pvp servers and it's pretty rare to see world pvp on either of them (2 of the highest populated east coast pvp servers), you will start running into them on Tatooine, Alderaan and Hoth. Voss is a nightmare if there are gank squads roaming around, if there are, log off and play an alt for a while unless you can get enough people on your faction to fight back.

Most of the pvp occurs in warzones, it's getting old now that it's almost always imp vs imp and hardly enough rebs to queue up for Alderaan or Voidstar, it's almost always Huttball.

Bioware are paying attention and will probably do some changes to encourage open world pvp on pvp servers (and hopefully restrict creating caracters on only one faction rather than having alts on both sides).

Yes, we are all talking about the lack of PvP on PvP ( + PvP RP) servers.

However, in BioWare's defence, it is early days I suppose.

there is no such a defence for early days ion setting like this, if you invent a game where is classic good versus bad, why oh why you just dont do it proberly? why let both sides just do theyr own stuff without having nay kinda a conflict other than poor warzones.. one would think that today when we have come pretty far in industry this would not be issue but it is still.

it is not hard to organize battle once a week, weekend for example, winner gets cookies loser gets empty jar. simples.

    but no..

PvP is secondary In most games. TOR is no different in that aspect. It is a must have if you want to have broader appeal but not the primary reason to create a themepark mmo.

Well, it seems to me that some minimal mechanics might make a difference... a chest which appears in no man's land once every hour during peak hours, perhaps. A world buff that increases the drop rate of credits, and rare items, or which increases the crit rate in crafting.

Or even a title, plus cosmetic reward. "Defender of Tatooine" plus a power to make people applaud.. some such.

I suspect they will do this over time, but I guess I also need to accept that with population caps, the focus will always be on end game pvp.

A shame, as for all WAR's many many issues, early game world PVP was an absolute blast.

I don't know, ask the people who ganked me on Tatt a few times last night.... did I mysteriously zone into a bg for a few seconds or something?

Apart from lack of incentives it's mainly the world layout I think. Illustrated it:

Some worlds in swtor have more shared area's though, but this goes for most of the (shared) worlds.

  • drbaltazardrbaltazar Member UncommonPosts: 7,856

i t6hink a lot of world have it  included (ignore starting zone(planet)

i went to nar shadaa, tatooine and both have it included ,nar shadaa is a bit complexto get at tho but both faction share the bottom level of the bonus area.

  • rdrpappyrdrpappy Member Posts: 325

Tatooine, Alderaan and the planets there after are non stop world pvp, if you leave the starport and get out in the world.

There are chests and resources in the FFA zone there was probably people there farming them if you didn't see any

Until we see action by BW, I am rather skeptical about that, given what they delievered and how vague they are about the super PVP plans they are going to implement.

imo, it sounds more and more like 'dangling the carrot'.

I want to actually see BW demonstrate they can make substancial improvements, before I start believing that they will be able to do so -- or even actually willing to do so.

I would like to see TOR add more 'blended' zones like the Vanilla WoW, as added content.

Imo, BW does quests well, but they need to improve the MMO aspects.

Most of the shared worlds need more linkage between the factions. I did have some fun killing folks while datacron hunting thou.

OP... great question, and one I have been constantly asking for since beta. I just read where the game is going with the March update....ZERO IS BEING DONE TO IMPLEMENT WORLD CLASS RVR.So I cancelled a few minutes ago.I'm frankly sick of thinking  about my $59.95 mistake.Time to move on.

Alot of the big fixes go into next development, so like AOC it took them a year to put in things people want.   BW might be quicker but I wouldnt expect anthing out till next winter.     Not a waste of money try it out in a few months.    Plus most people are not 50's wait till the server pop is leveled then youll see alot more pvp going on.

People complaining about Ilum are the minority of people that have 10 hrs a day to play games still.
