As I said in the news thread for the demo ~ Thank Fricken Goodness this got a release on Steam...I loathe EA and Origin!

  • maskedweaselmaskedweasel Member LegendaryPosts: 12,195

I'm still downloading off of Origin, but its nice to know EA is allowing steam to carry this stuff too.

This is still a game published by EA.. so... downloading from steam won't really change that.  Personally,  I like EA.

Just an FYI, it doesn't show up under demoS on the steam website yet so use the link in the post.

I don't care if its published by EA, I just don't want their grimy fingers inside my PC.

There are a lot of companies I loathe, but some still make great games and I can overlook it as long as I don't have to go through the BS EA is requiring for say Mass Effect 3 or the DRM BS of Ubisoft and the like.

However, if its a company I like ~ say Blizzard for example, I love their Battle.net service and greatly enjoyed playing Starcraft II online, and look forward to Diablo III.

So you don't mind the DRM of Diablo 3 where you are forced to have an internet connection. If you do not then you can not play there game.

That is correct, because Blizzard makes quality games.

Then there is EA who have notoriously been buying up companies to make a quick buck on their previously excellent IPs, ultimately destroying said company but also end up forcing their releases too early thus the game sucks and then they blame piracy.  Also there is the whole Origin BS and blaming Steam for unfounded reasonings which really comes down to just greed on EA's part.

Ubisoft does the same with most of their horrid titles ~ blaming piracy instead of owning up to their ridiculous and ever changing DRM tactics that are in all essence fucking over the honest/legit gamer by far!  In result release dates are all over the map.

I don't know what you're talking about... do you realize how terrible Activision is in comparison to EA?  Talk about turning a blind eye.  I like EA because they, more than any other big publisher, has taken chances on development.

For example, from EA we're seeing  SWTOR, as well as KOA and TSW this year,  not to mention ME3.  Just a small lineup of games on the horizon with EA attached... and these will be awesome games.

Origin is a smart business decision,  you have steam only titles out there, or titles that require steam,  its good business sense for EA to get into the same market.

Everyone has a bias I guess...

I just finished playing it, they've done something with the demo that I hope other devs adopt - earning unlockables to use in the full game (also ME3 items too).

But i'm not really as impressed with it as I expected to be, was reeeeeally looking forward to it but now it's kind of in the "meh" catagory. No real serious offenses, but moreless nit-picks, not nearly as fluid combat as advertised (animation lock, and slight delay), and just an overall lack of a "wow-factor" (not world of).

They really aren't shy about copying Fable at all it seem too. I more than expected some similarities and in some cases was hoping for them, but they went a little too far imo, even felt the need to use an identical method of finding items in water lol.

It was a demo so i've lowered my standards a bit to compensate, they've even stated the demo is of an older build with very few patches applied, though there are some things about it no patch can fix since they are main elements of the game.

If you buy the Steam version, can you play with those who buy the Origin version?

Noticed the same thing.  I liked Fable, but always strikes me as a bad sign when a game imitates another game so closely.

My biggest gripe was with the graphics, though.  They're not quite as stylized as Fable, but still, really low poly, low res.  The world looks nice, but my character looked almost as blocky as a character out of WoW.

Might still be a fun game though.. I quit the demo, after leaving the dungeon - how much farther does it go from there?

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

I posted this in the general discussion forums as well...might as well post my thoughts on the game here too, since it fits more here.

    Cons-

    No changing keyboard bindings

Little graphics options to change, but that might be a demo thing

No jumping, but I can live past that

Movement/camera is horrid to control...the character moves really awkwardly with wasd and the strange camera movement doesn't make moving with the mouse much better. Among the worst character movement I've seen in a 3d game.

World is very linear...I thought it was going to be open. Instead it is a lot of narrow paths, with a few open areas

World feels really small, not counting the locked in areas...I looked at the world map, and besides the linear paths you can very plainly see, it didn't seem like the world was that large. My character was making a lot of progress on the world map as he moved, and I only was running for a couple minutes. But the demo has locked areas, but that isn't what I mean.

Voice acting is hit/miss...some characters I really liked, others not...I did like some of the tutorial voice actors, the gnomes or whatever they are

    Pros-

Combat is fun/fluid...being able to roll/dodge is nice. The combat was actually really fluid, which I thought with the horrible movement it wouldn't be.

Character customization appearance is nice, lots of choices and what not

Character development looks like it will be good as well, again a lot of choices

Aethetics are amazing, they nailed that part down

World feels really cool, in terms of story and the artwork, despite it being linear and feeling small

Overall, it screams console port. In terms of world design, no keyboard bindings, little graphics options...usually the first three big signs it was made for console. I thought it was going to be a huge, open world...but it is more of a console RPG, and not a open world, PC RPG like Morrowind, Oblivion or Skyrim.

Just FYI... The Publisher is listed on Steam as 38 Studios... not EA. In fact EA isn't mentioned anywhere.

already played the demo through origin. although i wont pre order the game, i cant wait for it to come out. My only disappointment with this game (judging by the demo gameplay) is why in the 9 Hells a game such as this one dont have a jump button?....seriously an "open world" and i cant even jump. The combat / movement mechanics of this game are great and they could benefit very well from aerial combos as well.... seriously 38 studios.... even super mario jumped over obstacles

Yeah, but when you go to log in, for some dumb reason you're forced to log in with an Origin account!  Well not the client, but with an EA/Origin account...very odd!

The EA logo is at the beginning of all the trailers, too.. although, there seems to be different degrees of publisher involvement, and I'm not sure how to tell the difference.  Such as how EA owns Mythic and Bioware, but not 38 Studios or Big Huge Games?  Or do they?  Then what about Realtime Worlds?  I remember the EA logo at the beginning of APB trailers, too.

    It's on Steam? nice!

I would rather cut my balls off than use Origin, that bug filled piece of crap is even worse than Ubisoft DRMs.

All their games are console ports, they also love to kill great franchises and turn them into mediocre FPS.

Not to mention that they support SOPA, so anything that has an EA logo is a big no for me, and for anyone with a shred of dignity.

I agree with the graphics, they could really use some more work, even some design choices need changing (really disliked the white outline of what you target, it looks terrible). I didn't want to say it but WoW came to my mind too.. and that does not give me any hope for their upcoming MMO.

But anyways, it's a pretty large demo actually.

Instead of completely boxing you into a single quest, you're given a time limit once you're in the open-world (45min I think) to do whatever you want. Although you're confined to a single province/contienent/whatever you want to call it, there are a few towns/factions/dungeons to find atleast.

Still didn't go everywhere within that time, didn't even do a single quest either lol.

You should probably give it another try, the beginning single attack combo almost made me turn it off too. It does get better once you level up and start unlocking more/new things to combo together.

And I'd rather download my games through Origin at full 100Mbs than from Steam with 600kbps.

I used to be a Steam fanboy, but they really need to upgrade their bandwidth or start researching P2P solutions.

Bad luck i guess, Steam is way faster than Origin for me.

However... damn offline mode, it sucks, lost internet connection 1 week ago on a vacation and i haven't been able to play any game, apparently you need to have internet before going into offline mode, nice work Valve... i miss Skyrim and SWTOR :/

Question for those playing the demo ( into the world ) is it just the intro that is so "guided" ?

I did not have much time to play and just checked it out a bit, rescued the gnome and then we were off and i had to shut it down until tomorrow...

I am guessing it is just like that in the intro part ...

Also anyone have success using a ps3 or xbox controller with PC demo ?

the world (at least in the demo) is very guided as well. Lots of narrow paths, with a few open areas...very similar to Fable. Even the quests seem very guided in the demo. But if you liked Fable, you'll probably like this...I personally didn't like Fable.
