Hi, I'm new here to these forums. I've been playing MMORPG's since 2000. I started off with UO and moved on to many...and i mean MANY other games. I just tried the free trial after purchasing or just downloading the game. Most games I have NOT been satified with...not at all. Ultima Online was the first and most respectable one. . .but lately I've been wanting to try WoW out. It looks fun, the enviroments look astonishing and I love the art in the game. What is in the game for me? IF I buy the game, what will I like and what will i hate? can any of you compare it to Old school Ultima Online? Anyways, respect to you guys. . .I wanna try WoW out, currently playing GW (do love it). Thanks a bunch!

For what its worth WoW is among the best games I have ever played. I have never played UO so I can't help you there. WoW is worth a try. I think you will be in for a real treat if you do. WoW is one of those rare gems that seldom comes along. Maybe once in a generation.
Do you like Blizzard games in general? I was a huge Diablo2 fan and I like this game even more. There is no question that WoW is the pinnacle of Blizzards' accomplishments, and they have put out some good stuff.
"The Pen Is Mightier Than The Demo"
Welp, in terms of WoW from what I've seen after playing it from release to a few months ago, World of Warcraft is the best game out there from level 1-59. From those level's I had a blast. After that sadly, the endgame content is a bit dissappointing. The induction of the battlegrounds sparked my hopes once more but with the long lines to get in and the fact that it's little more than a bit capture the flag game, I was at a loss again. Basically, if you don't mind either the long ardious epic level raids, the killing of these epic level monsters over and over until you get the drop you're looking for and the capture the flag style PVP, play WoW, it's a great game. (Only other think that irked me was that the PvP battlegrounds were only for lev 60's.. I was really hoping to be able to enjoy them with my lower level characters)
If you want a bit more in depth PvP system with rewards that seem more fulfilling(but less filler between lev 1 and lev 50), play Dark Age of Camelot on one of the new servers (with-out Trials of Atlantis).
WoW has heaps of grinding, so if you dont like to sit there and kill enemies for quests then WoW isn't for you
Hi! I'll try to give you a good review. I'm an Ex-UO player to!
WoW is an amazing game. I recommend you take your time with it though, don't rush to the end game. You will have an absolute blast from levels 1-50. It starts to get a bit repetative after 50 and you have to do some grinding to keep progressing in a semi-timely manner. Other posters are correct when they say there is no 'End Game'. But remember, WoW has only been open less then a year. And already they have added a lot to the game: New Zones, New Dungeons, Battlegrounds, Honor System, Quests. I truely believe that Blizzard will implement a system to complement the End Game and give WoW a more secure long-term future. But for now, the End Game consists of Level 60 Instances that you can run for eLoot. Nice for awhile, but gets boring pretty quick. Especially considering some of those raids can take 5 hours or more.
Most of the players have characters that are 55+ by now. So you might have a hard time finding groups for Instances (dungeons). One good piece of advice is to learn how to use the Friends list so you can keep track of the people you group with and team up with them for other things. When you get a large enough friends list, you rarely have to worry about doing anything alone. I would also recommend finding a good Guild, just because it makes the game all the more fun, (www.allianceknights.net) is a good one. There is also an in-game dungeon grouping system where you can join the queue looking for a group while you go about other business, pretty nifty.
The crafting is not anywhere near as fun as UO. But on the other hand, once you get to be a high level crafter your items are actually in-demand and useful. Plus you can sell them at the Auction House for a nice profit. And BTW, you will love the Auction House, it is great for finding items.
The GUI in WoW is completely customizable, I recommend using the regular UI for awhile. When you feel your ready for the next generation UI go to ui.worldofwar.net to download extra Mods.
The PvP is pretty tough, and not quite balanced yet IMO. You will get ganked in contested areas sometimes. But there is also potential for great duels and battles to take place. Especially if your in a Guild and you raid some town or outpost, that is a lot of fun. And some 1-on-1 fights can be fun to if you don't get bushwacked by an overpowering class. i.e. If a Hunter gets suprised by a Rogue, 99% of the time the Hunter loses.
Another cool thing about WoW is the experience system. If you log out of the game in an Inn or major Town (like Ogrimar or Under City) you get rested experience build up. And when you come back after a day or two, you will have enough rested XP to get double experience on your kills. This is great for players who have to take a couple days off, and allows them to progress a little faster and get things accomplished. Thats the nice thing about WoW, you can get a sense of accomplishment even if you only play two hours every other day.
I'd say WoW or L2 are the best Fantasy RP/PvP games out right now. L2 is a lot more of a grind though and has a bad problem with Farmers and Bots. I also think you would like Eve Online if you enjoyed the simpler aspects of UO. Eve Online is a really fun game, I just wish they didnt have a monthly fee or I'd play it all the time. And BTW, GW and WoW cannot be compared. Totally different games! GW is for a more casual gaming experience, WoW is for someone who has a few hours a day to invest.
To summarize WoW in a very few words - WoW is a very friendly game, very casual friendly, and "noob" friendly. Its a solo game for the most time, but it has a lot of stuff for groups. Thats what i love most about it, WoW lets you choose your gameplay, whether u like soloing or preffer grouping.
The problems you may encounter with WoW
- sometimes servers go offline. This happens more often on some "problematic" servers. I played on Magtheridon and now on Skywall - both are not problematic servers.
- you may experience lack of things to do at level 60, but I personaly havent reached that far. i have like 6 characters, they are so fun to play that I simply cant concentrate on one to get that far.
- a lot of people complain about community. I personaly dont have a problem with that becuase I just leave general chat so none of the arses bother me
- if you join PvP server, prepare to get ganked a lot... and i mean A LOT. That was one of the reasons i left Magtheridon - i had 4 chars, 47 rogue, 2 level 30+ chars and 2 level 20+ chars. I recommend PvE server or if you care much about community then join RP server - on RP servers people are encouraged to roleplay, if you cant speak LEET, etc

Wow. . .I appreciate all the help you guys gave me, especially all the ex-UO players comparing it to UO. It's great to know that all of your information is solid and no holes in it. Everyone agrees the community isn't that great (but to be honest...I'm not a huge community guy, I like to play with just a couple of friends and do some fun quests) Of course, I'm a casual player, I've heard that casual players are welcome to WoW. Plus..I love Diablo2, and I"m sure I'll love WoW. I've seen some pictures of WoW online. The enviroments look STUNNING...beautiful, kind of reminds me of UO's setup in a way (back in the pre-uo:r days) Wow, I really enjoy reading all of your reviews. . .I think I'm definitally might try this game. Thanks everyone.

A bit more comparison to UO...
Just like in UO, you can just go exploring, venture into unknown without needing a group or raid. Its a very do-what-you-want world. Unlike in EQ, where you realy gotta wait, sometimes for hours, in order to find a group to do pretty much ANYTHING. WoW has that too, they are called instances - a sort of dungeons, once you enter those, only your group is in that zone, no1 outside your group can enter that. Also, mobs in those dungeons are ELITE, means it takes 2-3 times more effort to kill them. But they give more exp and far better loot then regular ones. So if you wish, you can solo pretty much all the way to the top levels, occasionaly grouping to complete ELITE quests or venture into dungeons for loot and money. Thats what I usualy do.
Remarkably, i find crafting to be very similar to UO, a bit more complicated but still pretty close to UO. At first, you must gather resources, the higher level the resource, the further you gotta travel to harvest it. It can be dangerous if your level isnt very high. So crafting depends on your level. Once you gather resources, it usualy takes several more components to craft something good. Simple items or subcomponents dont take much to make, but items that u can use, weapons or armor, usualy require several subcomponents, and at high levels a rare item(s) like gem or rare ore or hard to craft component. Choose crafting carefuly because you can only select 2 per character, i suggest getting one manufacturing (leatherworking, smithing, alchemy...) and the other one resource gathering one (skinning, mining, gathering...) so you dont wate your money on buying resources.
Unfortunately, you cant have a house in WoW like you could in UO.
Also, I cant stress this enough, BE CAREFUL what server you choose, on PvP server there is OPEN PVP everywhere but the noob zones. So starting with level 20ish, when you gotta venture outside the noob one, you are open target for ANYONE. And you will be ganked. Level 60s take perverse pleasures in slaying level 20-30 players, there is no punishment for that.
I also suggest to finish all green and up quests, about a third of your exp comes from completing quests. Dont rush into levels, take your time or you will burn out fast or reach 60 and I hear after 60 there isnt much to do except from raiding or PvPing...cant comment on that though, i have like 8 chars and highest is level 47 heh... Each class plays differently, so its like a totaly new game everytime you start a new char. Id suggest to start a few chars, 2-3 and get them to level 10, see what you like more. Let us know if you need some pointers on what class to play and how to play it, id be happy to give u some advice.
Peace

you will love the fact that if you play with alot of friends its fun. you will hate the fact that you get ganked a shit load of times before you reach lvl 60.
There is alot of confusion out there when it comes to casaul/hardcore so I will put it this way.
1-59 Very very casaul
60+ Very very hardcore
