Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios have announced that the free to play version of Star Trek Online has officially launched.

"We couldn't be more excited," said Jack Emmert, CEO, Cryptic Studios, Inc. "Updating Star Trek Online to the popular free-to-play model removes those barriers of entry that previously kept fans and casual gamers away. Anyone can download and play Star Trek Online at no cost. There's no better way to see how sitting in the captain's chair feels."

Get started on your epic journey on the Star Trek Online site.

No Jack! It wasn't the subscription model that kept the Star Trek fans away!

It was because your game was garbage and all the promisses you never delivered upon!

How long do the Klingon faction players have to wait for their content? They are waiting since release! Changing to F2P model isn't going to change thier minds.

I am still boycotting because no T5 Constitution refit.

But that aside, it is similar to TOR if you think about it.

    1) Both have carved the game up into zones and instances

    2) Companions

    3) Sci fi

    Dissimilarities

    1) Space is more compelling in STO

    2) Space station is much busier

    3) Hi rez textures

    4) SWTOR has bigger worlds

    5) STO space is bigger

    6) STO isF2p

This is what gives  f2p games a bad rep.  Horrible games that are 'free'.

Guess what. Even though it IS free, I'm not going to play. It was never the subscription model.  The game itself is a shallow representation of the Star Trek Universe.

    1) Space is more compelling in STO  Compelling how?  I mean its an opinion as all are but its not even backed up by your reasoning, I might agree with you if you presented it with all your thoughts on the subject.

    2) Space station is much busier   I don't know if I could take any more people on my screen at one time.... SWTOR has a crap ton of people on its space station...

    3) Hi rez textures     True this is a difference

    4) SWTOR has bigger worlds    I don't really know much about STO's world sizes, nor have I seen anyone compare these two games worlds, but I mean SWTOR's worlds are sooo big in my opinion I believe this easily.

    5) STO space is bigger   Well space is pretty much a mini game or a road in SW, and its kinda THE POINT of ST.  So I mean this is a given in my opinion.   Most of Star Trek happens in space,  95% of Star Wars is on planets.

    6) STO isF2p   sure is :-D

One of the things that irk me right now is the use of Dilithium as a currency.  As it stands, Dilithium is a rare and valuable.  I know that its just a game, but it just bothers me that something that is used to power Starships is being used for trading on such a broad scale.  Why didnt they go with a bartering item that was more commonly used in the shows?

I think, if any currency is to be used, it should have been GPL.

Oh well, just my own little gripes.

Love the Perfect World link there :D

well...it's been bought by Perfect World International so that means two things

    1 - it's turning into pay2win

2 - I won't be able to play it from my current location because PWI put an IP block on a bunch of countries

I review lots of indie games and MMORPGs

Free or not, a poor game is a poor game.

Why did cryptic spend a year making this f2p when they could have put the resources into fixing the lack of content and the kdf faction?
They said the game was doing well.

Given most people that post on these forums think all mmos are bad I'll take these comments with a pinch of salt and fo like iI do with and give it a try and see what its like .

Like all the other games rubbished in these forums I'll probably enjoy it but I doubt I'll go beyond the free to play content like most f2play .

  • lalartulalartu Member UncommonPosts: 437

    I doubt Cryptic did anything

They got sold to Perfect World who pretty much makes everything p2win

I think it was also a money question. they ran out of funds for this project and had to be bought out

I review lots of indie games and MMORPGs

The fact is, Cryptic has not made a profit since they sold CoH and left most of their real talent behind with NCsoft.  Both their MMO's were launched too early, had little reason for players to interact socially and lacked content.  Sad really when you see games like UO and EQ that launched years ago and can still maintain a subscription fee.

As casual games that you can play for free, they are fun and serve that purpose.  Just dont come in thinking you are getting a AAA MMO and dont get sucked into their pay-to-win model.  Play the episodes, enjoy what you can for free and dont think about doing any PVP since it is filled with all the people who purchased special ships for the consoles that gve them extra powers that you can not earn in the game.

The game isn't that bad.. Maybe it was worst during launch (which most mmo's are, yes, even your beloved WoW)

    but of course..

    Overreacting mmorpg fans are overreacting..

I don't think people are overreacting. I was originally a Cryptic supporter... until things clearly started to turn out for the worst.

The sad thing, is that their huge forum community told Cryptic exactly what they wanted, and what would NOT work, but Cryptic didn't listen, and instead wanted to push STO out the door half-assed.

I purchased two pre-purchase bonuses as well as a lifetime susbscription. One of the few purchases in my life I truely truely regret.

Cryptic products are sub-par, and they should never have been given the Star Trek IP license to begin with. Blizzard, CCP, or BioWare should have been given the rights, but unfortunately Star Trek has always been too niche as is sci-fi. However... Blizzard's secret MMO is slated to be sci-fi in nature, so excited about that!

I'm going to try it out simply to see what has changed since launch, and to see if they make you keep that atrocious Pando Media Booster installed to play it... STO was at launch a terrible representation of the Star Trek IP, and the game had very few redeeming qualities even for people that weren't fans of the IP... I'm curious to see if anything has changed for the better, but I rather doubt it.

f2p is well worth giving it a go, its not all that bad when you get into some of the space PVP battle ground. Was not worth a monthly sub.

Also as with SWTOR being a big waste of the SW IP, STO is also a big waste of the ST IP

  • HodoHodo Member Posts: 542

Comparing SWTOR to STO is like comparing a Reliant Robin to a Toyota Prius.  They both are bad, just one is newer than the other.

STO isnt a "bad" game, its just not a "good" game.   Its "meh" at best.   I think I played it free for the length of the free trial and that was all I needed.

I only wish someone would put out the other concept of Star Trek Online, the one where you were ONE person on a star ship, with other REAL people, working your way through Starfleet, actually LIVING the world, instead of riding through it.

So much crap, so little quality.

As someone who didn't follow the lead-up to the launch or have any real knowledge prior to playing I find it a fresh take the genre (there aren't too many hybrid space sim mmos out there). Upon reading these comments I can imagine everything that is missing from the game - living life as a student and rising through the ranks or being on the wrong side of the federation and all that other cool diplomatic stuff.

Knowing that it was pushed out early gives me a pretty clear indicator of where the resources went towards the end of production - space battles. Also a good idea of where the development was left behind - planetary environments and interaction.

Now if I imagine the environments looking a bit better but the space combat bland and uninteresting I do not think I would be too satisfied with the game. Ultimately the game does have it ugly glaring flaws but the fun parts seem pretty polished.

Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?

I know your pain, brother. There are other MMOGs that I'd love to play, but are IP blocked. F*** you, companies that IP block!

My gawd, if you guys hate the game so much, why are you wasting your time and ours posting about how crappy you think it is? I, for one, think it's a great game, and don't regret a single moment to a single dime I've invested into it. I highly recommend it.

People on these forums are always trashing anything that it's not wow like, they have been trashing FFXIV a lot and it's a very nice game that's getting better every month with new content, so i will try this game now that is f2p.

Seriously, when I read these posts I feel like the only guy on the planet that doesn't regret buying the game at launch with a lifetime sub.  To potentially interested players: take all of the posts with a grain of salt and just try it.  Yes it has flaws. No, it's not "teh best game evar".  But it can be entertaining.  In the end, that's all any of us are looking for.
