Sometimes that movie or TV show you love so well is NOT the best candidate for an MMO. In today's Coyote's Howling we show you exactly what we mean when we say that. Check it out and then let us know what you're thinking in the comments.
I've seen it a million times:
A new movie, game, or sci-fi series comes out and instantly the forums are flooded with threads stating that the focus of our current mania should be made into an MMORPG. Avatar, Halo, Firefly; all of these titles have at one time or another been in development, and all of them have either been canceled or fizzled before they could gain momentum.

lol
True enough
Well done~ Thanks for the laughs today!
Agreed. Huge titles won't automatically mean huge success. Those that try to benefit off something that has already proven itself need to realize that their particular venture doesn't always go hand-in-hand with past successes of the title in a whole nother form.
Quantum Leap! They're making a movie...with no Scott Bakula! Noooo.
I think Avatar could work really well if done right of course. And we all know we all have our opinions on what "right" is, and could argue that if anything is done right it would work.
So for me Avatar would be a PvE Sandbox game. And humans would not be a playable race. Humans would be the enemies. You could have raids against human establishments. Have big boss fights where your fighting a tank or something.
Just one major problem I hate guns in MMO's. It kills any immersion for me. Normally 1 shot from a gun, its over, so the perception has to be nerfed to make guns work. I just dont do that well. I had that problem in TOR's beta with light sabre's. My preception of light sabres is it cuts anything like butter, except another sabre. I couldnt get over that.
Then again you could always remove the human element and make a new story, with the primative weapons only. for me that would probably be the best option.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
Now Playing: N/A
Worst MMO: FFXIV
Favorite MMO: FFXI
Unfortunately, not every concept that's geek-positive will make a good MMO.
Consider what a Half-Life MMO would be like as a player, just for a moment, before calling for Skyrim to be converted.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
This is obviously true and I understand what you're saying, but getting hit with an arrow or a battle axe will put you down in one blow, too. And swimming in plate armor? Casting fireballs? Well, you know what I'm saying.
But yeah, it's hilarious to be tanking through automatic weapons fire.
Another great one. Pointless yet enlightening all at once... haha. Do you seriously have 6 unopened copies of Matrix online? Lol... and is that really how you got them?

Damn man, every article you do has some kind of sick and twisted high school story about how you were abused and picked on. Not every gamer was a nerd in high school. Shit, I was the one giving wedgies and dunking heads in toilets. Not because the people were geeks though, because they were preppy a-hole's who deserved it. Whats better than giving your high school teams quarterback a sore asscrack for sundays game? Lets be honest the little whiney "I'm gonna cry to my mommy everytime we lose a game" turd in the punch bowl definitly deserved it. Its his offensive line you have to watch out for....
Although when your the one supplying the alcohol at the weekend parties you get a free pass. I miss high school. I wish i were a nerd back in the day, maybe I would be rich and extremely succesful now had I been.
"People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People's heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool."
Mmorpg market is WAY oversaturated so making another flood of games based on movies IP would be fail.
you had me at "...oh boy"
hey think on the bright side he have some gifts to send to anyone who annoys him well 5 people he should save on box to as reminder
Prepare to add Swtor to that list
My God, man! Your articles get better every week!
And Amazon has a pretty sweet price on those communicator pins now. Should you, you know, need another one.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
I feel your Star Trek pain.. I bought Star Trek online (Collectors edition) and all I got was this lousy T-shirt.. I still wear the T-shirt. I did not however buy the lifetime sub..
I Beta tested Matrix and was so scared at what they had out near release I uninstalled it and put all the emails in the spam folder hehe
I think it was unfair to include Star Trek Online dispite how you feel about it because unlike all the others, it hasn't actually failed. Oh, sure we've all made the threat that STO is headed down the tubes, but until it does, it's idle speculation on our part.
Games and movies based off of IP is a sure fire way to know that the thing you were once fond of is about to have a giant deuce dropped on it in a very public and humilating manner.

There definitely is a mis-conception that an IP that has a large fan base can enter an entirely different market. If you turn a video game (single player) into an MMO... it doesn't have that much of a leap because the built in fan base is already playing the same type of game. Unless they don't have internet where the majority of "fans" live.
When you take a very successful IP that is mostly books/movies/tv ... I'm not sure why someone thinks it will make the same leap just as easy.
That is before you even take into consideration the quality of the product created.
MMO's on their own fail all the time simply because of bad design. Taking an IP and adding in bad design will not suddenly equal success.
I don't really see why any development company would ever want to use a 3rd party IP regardless. Lack of control and extra cost through license fee is a bad starting point in my opinion.
Then you have the interpretation crowd as well for a negative. You know when you make a movie that's based on a book... ya sometimes people think the movie was better but usually its the other way around.
Thanks for the article.. was fun to read.
"I mean, our game was finally here! A digital world where computer geeks could rule with an iron, yet ergonomically supported fist! We thought that we would be the new Gods of a kick-ass Kung Fu simulator chockfull of programmable hot chicks that had to do anything we commanded. We would become one with the virtual world, and even as our real bodies withered and rotted away, we wouldn't care because we were IN THE MATRIX!
Then I played the game, and I died a little bit inside."
Coyote, I think you died more than a little that day
"There are at least two kinds of games.
One could be called finite, the other infinite.
A finite game is played for the purpose of winning,
an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play."
Finite and Infinite Games, James Carse
Firefly. Sigh. You could be right. Getting sent on a perpetual stream of petty fetch and carry quests does not make for feeling like big damn heroes.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

If only we could mind-meld some Trek concepts into the Star Wars game. Transporters, Vulcans, Q, tribbles, and Captain Kirk--we would have the perfect game where no mmorpg has gone before.
