Xsyon or Wurm

Anyone played both? What are the differences? Is one  of them easier to get into and learn the basics in?

Xyson is a shell of a game with 'meh' graphics. If you liked to play in a sandbox with nothing but your hands when you were a kid, then Xyson is for you.

Wurm is a fully fleshed out game that has terrible graphics. If you liked to play in a sandbox with lots and lots of really cool toys, then Wurm is for you.

Wurm has spent years changing, growing, and becoming better. The game at it's core, is vritually everything I had hoped the genre would evolve into after playing my first MMO in '99. Mechanically, the game is amazing and even though I really don't care about graphics, after about 6months the graphics really weighed in on me and I gave it up. (yeah they are that bad)

I prefer Wurm, but like the dude said; terrible graphics.

The environments are good, but the character/NPCs models are the same godawful ones they've had for years, while nearly everything else got new ones. They have plans in the works for customizable faces and avatars that show the equipped gear, already seen on tower guards (somewhat), but I dunno if there is any good news on the animation front. If you can't stand models that are both mediocre, and do not animate, then wait till its added.

No point in spoiling an amazing game by going into it with the mindset that you *should* hate how it looks.

If what you say about Xsyon is true I might give Uncharteted waters a try, but I'm in the mood for à survivor type of game. I thought maybe Xsyon had some more substance now.

You are required to go through a tutorial island now in Wurm.

I would go with Xsyon over wurm. Wurm is losing players currently and the graphics are horrible but the person above saying it has good game play is far off from the truth. Wurm is based of a old MUD and is not instant gratification, you will also learn that once you get one skill up you're stuck doing another and another and once you've built one thing there is no point doing it over and over again. The materials required to do anything in the game take sometimes hours to gather before you can do anything with them if you have the skill that is required and if you don't fail repeatedly at lower skill which will have you at the end of a week wondering why you're wasting your free time working in a game.

Wurm is a massive time sink with no benefit really to a starting player and all the old players are the only ones that are making a profit and playing economy off of you and most of that is very limited as it is.

    Xsyon is your best bet.

xsyon is a dead end imo and just the like a similar game by this company (Roma Victor), it won't really stay afloat for much longer.

Wurm has been out for years and is not going anywhere, so it's a safer bet

Xsyon is also unfinished and has almost nothing once you reach a certail level in the game. there is a shortage of resources and not that many things you can do

Wurm is the opposite - tons to do and tons to make, but it does take time. you'l never reach the point where you'll think you're bored or have nothing to do

so personally, I'd choose Wurm, but since it does require a huge time commitment, I'd go with the following instead:

1 - Minecraft/Terraria - good sandbox alternatives if you dont mind the single player concept

2 - Haven and Hearth - a great alternative and absolutely free, but has Ultima Online graphics. very very survivor oriented and is by far a hermit's paradise compared to other two games

    3 - wait for Salem

I review lots of indie games and MMORPGs

I would say Xsyon is easier to get a grasp of. Its fun to make your 'camp' and learn the resources and craft out of many different tradeskills. One of my favorite crafting/gathering MMO's ever.  Drinking and eating is even fun. But once you get higher in tradeskills you learn that old saw blades are hard to come by and theres not much to combat other than targetting and clicking fast.

Wurms environmental graphics arent bad but the models are bad. It takes a little more effort to get a hang of but probably will be a safer bet long term because of more to do.

    So, in summary:

Wurm =Long term fun. Probably better total package now if you can stomach the models

Xsyon= Setting up a camp, gathering, tradeskills is fun.. but the long term prospects arent there. For me I knew Id only play for a month or so and then quit even going into it and I felt it was worth it.

That is not true, we joined the game once with a group of people. We called ourselves the Mexicans as we would be willing to take any job really. At one point we where called upon by one of the richest and most expirience players as he was stuck in his mine, without a pickaxe to dig himself out or you could simply join a already established city or simply try to survive on your own.

I once set out to create my own farm, while I did had some outside help by getting some tools to get me started, the rest I did myself. Create the other things I needed, mined, leveled the ground, created the buildings, buid the fence and grow the crops. Maybe early on you can not play the economy, but neither can you in Xsyon.

To the OP: Anyhow Wurm online can be played (limited) for free, so simply give a try. If you like the crafting part, you might also give ATITD a shot. It has not fighting though.

What I'm reffering to is the massive time sink that a casual player will take months if not years to catch up but the person with hours to stick in to Wurm will always do better while the casual player is never going to have a chance to compete. All that you mention is great short term but once you've done it over and over it starts to wear you down and you gradually run out of things to do and look for projects but those as well become the same thing over and over.

I do like Xsyon compared to Wurm just because with the recent changes and the direction I see things moving towards it will by far surpass what wurm offers and to me development is much much faster than Rolf can currently put out. I find a ton of wild life to kill though some require a group aspect to take out now which is something wurm never could offer me or anyone else. Anyone could take on the strongest of creatures solo and with the addition of horses giving height advantage this really did ruin the risk value for me and I never could find myself in a situation that had me worried about dying. In Xsyon that is a whole different thing and I'm actually worried as I'm 4 zones away from home I'll run in to something I won't be able to handle but that is the risk vs reward aspect I was looking for and my trips to farther away junk piles for that extra special stuff I can't find locally is always a drive for me and others.

Wurm is open ended and had no real set goal which was fine but at times I felt that there was not enough there even living on a pvp server to keep me going as pvp really just turned in to a staring contest and without even the basic of animations it really does turn people off to it. I and others struggled to bring players in to the game and we always got the same about how it looked 10 years old and everything was so hard to do and required so much time. People who only have 4-6 hours to put in to a game and even less for some will feel defeated really quick and looking for something else to play and I really think Xsyon is the solution as it doesn't require you to stick 2-3 months and sometimes more depending on how much time you invest in just one single skill. Mining alone in wurm along with multiple other actions take so much time that as someone mentioned once that you'll be watching movies or reading websites while doing these actions as they are very tedious and boring and the gains in skill are very slow with a lot of the skill sets.

Yeah I know some will disagree about wurm but after nearly 6 years of play I think I talk from experience and I've heard the same over and over from friends, family, and new players that tried the game and it's always the same with them all. Massive time sink, no real gains, and a feeling of defeat.

First off, Roma Victor was put out by Redbedlam which is a seperate company.  The developer of Xsyon, was a coder for Redbedlam at one time, but he left before the game died, to pursue his own ventures.  So please stop, I dont think my shit catcher can hold anymore.

Minecraft, is created by a co-creator of Wurm, there was a difference of direction in game develpement so he left to work on his own project.  He and the developer of Wurm are still close, and still talk.

Wurm Online is a good game, but fails to be fun due to the grind required to play.  It is really quite grueling after awhile.   But has a free to play option which isnt that bad.

Xsyon is easier to learn than Wurm, but isnt as deep as Wurm.  The graphics are better, but lacks the polish of some of the other games on the market.

Salem will be interesting but will be a turn off to 90% of the players, due to the permadeath system.  But that is a topic for another discussion.

So much crap, so little quality.

Anyone know what Xsyon status is (content wise) compared to WURM now?  I want to play this game but can't go to less content than WURM.

It really depends on what you are looking for. Xsyon has a real estate system coming soon. With the progress that Xsyon has made over the last few months... I'd predict that in 3 months time (realistically).

Aside from that Xsyon has more argueable to offer than Wurm.  Terraforming is awesome and the structures currently in game (more to come). A lot of work as been done on non player AI and will continue to progress.

My biggest upset with wurm was the character animations... I'm willing to sacrafice graphics for animations. If I wanted to play a mud i'd play a mud.  Xsyon as a pretty good combat system WITH animations :)

Hrm... what else? A lot of stuff is being calibrated as we speak. Xsyon believes they are at a point that tweaking is the focus which is always good. The game is about to be new and unexplored in relation to crafts. So it's a good time to get in and get ready.
