Smoke in space?

outfctrloutfctrl Member UncommonPosts: 3,619

I havent reached the level yet to get a space craft, but watched some vids on youtube.

I didnt know there is smoke in space.  Did anyone else question this?  Can you have smoke in space when something explodes?

I have played many space sims and have never seen this before.

I thought that it was just fire that couldn't ignite in space?

I looked it up. Resulting fire/smoke would be from oxygen already in the item that went and asploded.

  • ComfyChairComfyChair Member Posts: 758

No, you can't have 'smoke'. The pressure gradient would be so large the gas would move far too quickly to form noticeable smoke trails that linger. You can have flames (from leaking oxygen) that are limited to the area of the leak.

However, star wars is not sci-fi, it's future fantasy, so not having physically correct space battles is fine.

Not to mention, if it was realistic, space battles would be pretty dull. The explosions wouldn't have an 'impact' to them, visually, and it would be deadly quiet.

All I can say to that is... Its a Game.

I've never seen people walk around with lightsabers or shoot lightning out of there hands, yet, no one complains about those things. Are those things real aswell?

  • outfctrloutfctrl Member UncommonPosts: 3,619

I am not complaining, just wondering, that's all.  Personally, I think it's cool looking.

Nope, nor did I question super heated plasma "bullets", cryogenic grenades, glow sticks that cut through bulkheads, electro-magnetic shields that will absorb the energy from the plama bullets and glow sticks, flight in a vacuum having the same principles as flight in atmosphere, or a myriad of other things that go against established physics.

It's a game. I'll suspend my disbelief for a while so I can enjoy it.

My apologies if this came across as overly harsh or criticizing.

Actually, science fiction is based on reality, future fantasy isn't. SW is future fantasy.

More important than the reality of it, if you watch the Star Wars films, plenty of space explosions have fire and smoke. Watch the  the Death Star runs of Ep 4. All the  crashes and explosions have smoke.  Granted this is because Lucas used real explosives (before the advent of advanced digital effects) so he was kinda going with what he had. But it turns out also to be more interesting that way if yoiu fudge the science of space physics.

Indeedy.  Sci-fi goes to great lengths to SEEM like you can do those things, IRL.  Sometimes there's a vague backing of scientific principles, sometimes it's an absurd word salad.  In fantasy, the idea is that "it works because it works".  At best, it explains how something works(sword can cut through anything because it's powered by X crystal), but even then, the explanation only exists to create a plot device, like having to get said crystal, or antagonists steal the crystal so it can't be used, etc.

Well it doesnt matter if its fantasy, fiction or whatever....

StarWars is a IP loved by kids of 6 years to the smartest academics of our world. So things like smoke in space is just embaressing. Lightsabers, Plasmaguns, Force Powers ect. you can explain by finction... there are things that people can Imagine, in a world far away things like this can be.

But smoke in space can not be ! We all know this, ok in EP4-6 they used other special effects, just to make it look good. But what bioware did here in this time, with the value of this IP is unforgivable. Really would you play an space simulation were people could breath in space ?

    Shame on you Bioware...

Ep4-6 had sound in space, as well as big, fiery explosions.

    Both impossible.

    Can't "explain that by fiction."

really OP. really? have we nothing better to talk about? does anyone actually care about smoke or fire in space in a video game?
  • dougmysticeydougmysticey Member Posts: 1,176

Wow, this is about as nit picky as it gets. Every space battle in Star Wars movies was filled with sound, smoke, raging fires, etc. etc. This is based off the fictional universe where the physical laws as we know them do not appear to apply.

Space combat would be terribly boring if depicted as scientifically accurate as well.

Did someone say Asimov? My brain just jumped to a Foundation mmo. Then it exploded.

There would also be no BOOM and PEW PEW because sound needs matter (such as air) to travel through. Space doesnt have sufficient matter for sound to travel through effectively.

Thats why video games aren't like real life. Because real life isn't as fun.

I have always wanted to enjoy a good cigar in zero gravity and zero pressure. That is possible, but it requires a little tweaking. Add some oxygen and a pair of gloves (since the "flame" will be a little unstable :P) . There you have it. Smoking in space.
