It would depend on how well it supported a community and the internal networking infrastrucure, things like how well it handles player interactions and instance loading to features UI-wise to supplement group play/interaction.
The world of skyrim may be too small for in game real estate of an MMO, not by much but it would need some expansion to it.
Really the graphics, the gameworld and especially player and combat design it seems what current day MMOs lack, where you can viably play in first person mode as third, actually aiming attacks and hiting "hitboxes" not auto-locked targets. I think this really lacks in in current MMOs, people play console games and single player games that play like God of War, Batman and as we are talking about Skyrim, these combat styles are popular, just no game developer really has made a full open world triple A MMO from it. Also intuitive AI, where you companions have legit actions, to basic open world NPCs strafing in combat, stealthing, fleeing and using abilities not as predictable and much "smarter".
It would be nice if it had MO capabilities, which is easily doable, from its current form. Talking anywhere from 2-4 players, possibly more. People like to say you can't compare Skyrim to an MMO, you can, that is just a BS remark but in its current design it will not fit a MMO model much would need changing. Skyrim is comparible because it simply is an RPG, you can compare and FPS as they are of the same type whether they are (MO, MMO) MP based games or single player, the fundemental gameplay designs are the same, the goals are the same. You can't compare WoW to CoD, but you can compare games like Rage, Crysis, Halo, PayDay: The Heist, BF and CoD regadless of content but in terms of how they play and the fundemental gameplay goals are the same. That's usually why we have categories for this reason, any game warrants comparisons to any other games in some sense.
Details can always change it's the idea that counts.
Oh my, the wailing and gnashing of teeth that would ensue if Bethesda made an MMO as buggy as their single player games. In the words of Keanu Reeves: "Whoa".
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

Anyone who thinks it can't be done must not have played Ultima Online. Skyrim is a 3d Single-Player UO. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm really hoping all this admiration of Skyrim translates to MMO players finally demanding more MMORPGs from the Ultima Online/Star Wars Galaxies branch of the tree instead of the Everquest/World of Warcraft branch.
i think it would be a great setting for an mmo. Instead of making a Skyrim mmo it would be better to be a TES mmo. They could use all the lore n story from previous ES games. Any IP can become an mmo, but I believe that TES series would be great. Of course many mehanics would have to be dropped, changed and many more added. But as an IP, I dont think there would be a much better one. There are already many races with great dislike for each other. Some have enslaved others, over took others lands etc. Its already perfectly set up for Realm v Realm v Realm.
World should be bigger then and should be with any doub a Sandbox 100%.
But i seriously doub Bethesda ever go for Elder scroll mmo they prolly stick to what there best at is solo games.
And for money they dont have to do this they prolly made a huge amount of dollars with Skyrim 10.000.000 copys sold so far not digital copys included in this number, its one best selling rpgs in west of all time.
A TES-style MMO gets brought up every now and then on the various boards of this website. I'll simply cut & paste my reply from a different thread (one referenced at beginning of this one).

IMO, it doesn't have to follow point for point, previous gameplay elements for the MMORPG version. Hell, Skyrim itself made a huge change with character building and development compared to previous TES games. But it must, at least, have the same feel that made the IP what it is.
It was the same leap when Bethesda brought the Fallout franchise from 2D Isometric View to a full 3D environment with FO3, and it worked out very nicely. Some things were lost in the transition unfortunately, but Bethesda did a good job with the move.
Now, as for a TES game, there's several key things it must have. At least to me...
a. Alot of freedom in character development / building - From the older Skillpoint System to the current Perk / Trait System from Skyrim. The key thing was how much leeway a player had in developing a character. Another thing was the choice of making a unique character, with sliders in character building being used instead of "Pick 1 out of 3 possible faces. Good, now pick 1 out of 3 possible hair styles. Now pick Skinny or Fat."
b. Open World Exploration - A TES game would have to ignore current genre trends of linear travel options. It's a trademark TES feeling to "Go wherever the hell you want to." The great feeling of seeing that huge map, picking some far point, and somehow, someway, and however long, making it to the destination. All while coming across alot of cool discoveries as well as dangers.
c. Properly done setting - BioWare had gone on the record in saying how Bethesda is the best in the industry in providing the player a "sense of place" with their titles. Mood, atmosphere, the general look of the terrain as well as the villages, towns, cities in the game. Bethesda has usually made their mark in making their worlds special. Oblivion was generic though. But Morrowind and Skyrim had excellent "sense of place" with the Provinces they represented. Especially Morrowind.
d. Wide variety of activities - Combat and Crafting come immediately to mind. But the general tendency of TES games is letting a player do a crazy amount of possible things. It will be made more interesting with the persistency of an MMORPG world.
Again, it's doable for a TES MMORPG, but Bethesda had better get its sh*t right. In the MMORPG biz, you only get 1 first impression.
A big concern for me is the major trend of how MMORPGs are designed for years now. They're Themepark games, and TES games are the complete opposite of them. A TES MMORPG made with the severe limitations and lack of character customizations / development characterized by Themeparks would just absolutely kill the game for me.
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (First Lieutenant Clifton B. Cates, US Marine Corps, Soissons, 19 July 1918)
I think it would make an awesome mmo, I really can't understand the people who are saying it would be a bad idea. It would actually have the possibility of being the best mmo of all time imo.

When you consider just alone on how MMORPG game worlds are done:
* No freeform travel. You can only get to certain areas by a specific sequence, i.e. quests. For example, I can't go straight from Whiterun to Solitude on my own free will. I have to do specific quests or map sequences first before I can get there. How do you think Themeparks (which a TES game would be forced to be in today's genre climate) establish order and flow of their gameplay? Your progression and where you travel is very, very specifically preditermined even before you start the game the first time.
A true TES themed game is the polar opposite of what today's MMORPG's are about. TES games are all about options and freedom, and MMORPG developers today hate giving players that.

You don't think they would make certain adaptations to accomadate it's functionality as an mmo? I think they could do it and make it a great mmo if they wanted to is all i'm saying, it has the potentional to be a mmo and a great one at that.
It would be over ambitious as a MMO and fail due to bugs or inability to deliver...or it would be so simplified to make it work as a MMO that people would become pissed because it is not the Elder Scrolls they are use to.
Yes it could be great indeed. And Similar MMORPG's much like Skyrim have been made in the past and were actually the most fun of all that I have experienced since those times.
Do not let the seemingly "majority" nay sayers convince you otherwise.
The problem with perceptions is that it these are relative to time....many of the people who started playing MMORPG's with a game such a WoW, have no idea of how MMORPG's were before it, and from their perception Skyrim is something completelly new. (no one's fault, just the way time works).
It could be that you yourself is part of that category and now you play Skyrim and say to yourself how refreshing this is compared to the monotonous repetitive gameplay of what the now perception of a "standard" MMO is.
Yes Skyrim could be an MMO, or if you prefer an MMO could be like Skyrim, and yes it will be much fun to play and experience for a long time!

No, in this day and age of MMORPGs and how they ALL implement their game worlds, I firmly believe that a TES MMORPG would be totally screwed in this regard. Remember, we are IMO, in a "Dark Age" of MMORPGs. Restrictive map progression, i.e. linearity, is the name of the game. It absolutely dominates this genre now.
Freedom of travel is something MMORPG game developers have completely lost sight of the last several years. It was something that was a given in older MMORPGs. It's the Themepark mindset, and when you catch that ride at a Themepark, you literally can't see something until the ride takes you specifically through certain areas beforehand. In an open world type of game like TES titles are, the parents drop you off at Disneyland and tell you, "Have fun." And there you go, in whatever compass direction you want, doing what you want, picking some point on the map and making your way there. This is something modern MMORPGs cannot fathom doing anymore, and none of the titles on the horizon will lead me to believe otherwise.
This is only something SPRPGs still like doing, alongside some of the very ancient, early developed MMORPGs that are still out there. It is one of the reasons why a true TES MMORPG would start the race with a bullet wound to its buttocks.

The things that make it awesome as a single-player experience are ruined with the addition of others;
Random dragon attack? Kill it before someone else does.
Unique character builds? Not when everyone figures out archery is end-all PvP gold, and then needs nerfing.
Changes in the gamescape? Not when someone else has the option to aid one NPC over the other, effectively marginalizing anything done by either of you.
Housing? Only if you get there to claim it first, otherwise expect instanced zones for generic housing areas.
Epic gear? Everyone will get it, so that full daedric set is pretty much all anyone would wear eventually.
I could go on, but I think you get it by now...

It doesn't look like it's very playable at the moment. Personally I think it'll be abandoned like Oblivion online was, but we'll see.

I wouldn't want to play it. I hate games where everyone look like clones of each other, and I hate being player #5353 with an arrow in the knee.

Skyrim MMO would be a terrible idea. I would see no benefit to a sandbox MMO. It's a clinch of a niche market lmao.

That about sums up a Skyrim MMO.

I agree that Skyrim should not be made into a mmo.
But your saying we should stick to WoW and no other company should attemp ever making a mmo becouse all the reasons you sum up lol.
Skyrim is btw lightyears away from what WoW represents as game and gameplay wise Skyrim would never be made in themepark.
Quality Bethesda - Elder Scroll 9/10
Quality Blizzards Warcraft 5/10
it would be pretty much the same, only with more people and lag.
I always disliked Skyrim because to me it felt like an MMO without other people.
I would actually nut all over myself if Skyrim became an MMO, because its very meh to me for a single player game.
I don't care about innovation I care about fun.
