Star Wars the Old Republic is a lack luster game, when it comes to the very components that drive an MMO. I have been playing MMO's since 1998 from when Ultima Online was mainstream, and Everquest was on the horizon. MMORPG's have been morphed and changed to suit the general public. Sadly enough I feel as if veterans to MMORPG's are forced to deal with cookie-cutter type MMORPG's since World of Warcraft proved that MMORPG's could go mainstream and cater to any persons needs.
Its diffcult to contain that I believe Star Wars Galaxies clearly had a better established game system before NGE (I admit that it was riddled with bugs and imbalances, but SWG had something going with them)
My point is SWTOR is not interesting at all, very bland game components and very very very very very linear.
If I wanted a good story I can just play Knights of the Old Republic

This was my main complaint, too linear and it's too much like a single player game. When I'm on certain planets with 100+ people and no one says a word for an hour until the one guy says LFG for (group instance), it just doesn't feel like a $15/mo MMO. I don't mind soloing but when it feels like a 95% solo / 5% group game, I just cant bring myself to pay the fee.
Although I am not in alignment with your dislike of its linear path, I do agree with the assignment of the term. As a 36 year old father and game enthusaist, it is tough to not enjoy a game that caters to the changing paths of the age group who made MMO's so popular. I too played way back when, as the younger players call it the "golden age" of MMO's. No game was more fun than SWG pre CU and the NGE destroyed any hope of that game fixing its issues. But people tend to ignore that we, as aging human beings, do not have or should not have enough time for the EQ type hours. 9 hour raids some how do not seem to fit into an 9-10 hour work day, kids and a wife that wants some attention.
Games are not getting worse because they are trying to cater to us. We are running out of gamable hours so they are accomidating to our schedules. The sad part is that the new generation is going to be accustomed to this style of play and that is where we get the annoying, trolling, cocky, I can take over the game attitudes with the players. Sure you beat the last guy on hard mode with your wand and no gear on, but lets see you spend 100 hours straight in the Dreadlands just to get one level. Those players that had the time and the patience are still around, we are just older and have more important responsibilities just less of the time.
