I've been playing the game with all the free trial things going on, but I'm a bit lost. I haven't played the game since it was released and don't really know how to progress my level 50 guy.
I was doing pvp, but that's impossible now that everyone is rank 8. So what (specific, if you know) dungeons and stuff should I be doing to progress my guy? Any help is greatly appreciated.
My gear is basically all prestige rank 2 pvp stuff.

if your lvl 50 look for ember isle..but be careful...quite a dangerous place and you can get mown down rather quickly..do the events for inscribed sourcestones...you need 100 of tghem for items you get just off the crafting hall in meridain or i,m not sure in sanctum...dungeons,crafting,artifacts,oh and rifts lol.you can getg some nice gear.i,e the lesser essence's..you also may want to try the chronicles..you have a 1 man dungeon ,2x2 man dungeons, and they are adding another in update 1.7..hope that helps m8.
go to your charecter stat screen and mouse over your hit or focus (depending on your class). see what hit you have and it will tell you what hit/focus you need for running T1s and T2s. queue up for a random T2 and try some out. the dps queue is a bit longer, but there are enough players over geared for them that are just running them for the xp/marks.
hit up 50 chat and look for another player to run the chronicles with you. if you have a decent spec you should be able to do the basic one to unlock your planar attunement system (AA system) solo.
get into any of the zone events in Iron pine peak, shimmersand, stillmoor, or ember isle. as Kev said, use some caution around ember isle. that place can wreck a player fast. can do some of the quests around EI, and can get into the onslaught around any of the defence points. can build up the defence points and try and hold back the waves.
can check out the crafting, hunt some artifacts, do some of the epic quest lines, PvP rifts, puzzles and carnes, do some world pvp, warfronts, etc. also try and get into the daily raid rifts (may say RR or DRR in 50 chat). there's a quest you can get to do the daily RR and expert rifts.
the warfronts should be sticking you in the rank 1-4 bracket. you may just need a good spec for that. check the rift forums and find a pro build and then go wreck some face.
just some ideas to give you some stuff to do. if you're stayin long term get into a guild and break into some more of the content rift has to offer.
hope this helps a bit.
Don't even waste your time trying to PvP, if you're below Rank 4. I know I pretty much gave up on the PvP in this game. Even if people tell me that the grind to Rank 4 & 5 gear is easy, the fact that I have to grind my way up from "cannon fodder" status, to actually being able to do sh*t is abysmal IMO. Patch 1.7 will fix that but not sure when that patch is coming.
You have a few options, the best 2 being if you dont want pvp. Start doing some RIFT farming, the planar currency can be used to get some really decent gear - on par with Raid T1 level. Or jump into some T1 dungeons, just hit up the queue if you are not in the guild, and should be in one in a few moments. (join a guild is the best option tho, alot of causual or more than wiling to help and give assistance)
Some quest chains can give decent rewards too.
Or start crafting, there are some great epic item sets about.
