Set small goals for yourself, don't aim too high to begin with, it takes time.

Always hope for the best, but expect the worst! Be suspecious, especially if something sounds too good to be true, cause it is.

If a corp says they'll haul your ships, and they tell you to set no collateral, know that they intend to rob you.

    Join good corp, asap.

I made a mistake when I first tried it of treating it like any other MMO.  I didn't know what I wanted to do so (like I did in every other MMO) I wanted to try everything out then settle on what I liked best.  This simply can't be done in EVE, it's too big and too complex for you to really get a grip on everything.

So on that I suggest you pick something you really loved in another similar game (trading or manufacturing from Anno, combat from space games or even PvP) and do that well (devote your skills and time to getting better at that).

Once you have that one aspect of the game downpat you will have enough EVE experience to branch out a little into new and interesting areas.

Basically don't make the same mistake I did.  Pick one thing, do it well and your time in EVE will be far better for it.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

My best advice is to do every one of the beginner agent missions that you are offered. Doing them all will give you a good idea of your options, a decent amount of gear and money, and set you up to begin your journey into the EvE universe if you choose to subscribe.

Oh, and never fly anything you can't afford to lose :D

Along with the above suggestions, I would recommend that you join a corp...an established corp...if only for advice and guidance when you first start out.  ...and as said prior, don't trust anyone when you first start:)  Have fun and don't be afraid of losing a ship or two...it's going to happen eventually.  Best of luck

yeah do the missions from Sisters of Eve first (sort of like the main quest). it will reward you with a lot of stuff and teach you combat/mining basics

also, once you find what you like to try, google it and try to find a newbie guide or better even, a skill map to show you what skills you'll need to train for this.

so for example, as a miner, you may want to train skills to fly certain mining rigs and that would take you a few days

I review lots of indie games and MMORPGs

Make a plan and stick to it.   It can be costly to deviate off course in your training to take on skills you'll never use.   So know what you plan to do and learn the appropriate skills.  Also, never fly anything you cannot replace - ever.

    Some additional advises

    1. Find out what you want to do in the game. (Miner, Pirate, Scammer, Griefer, etc.)

    2. Get EVEMon from the official eve forums only.

    3. Don't fly a ship that you can't afford to loose.

    4. Find a player owned corporation (guilds). If you don't like that said corp, you can always get out of it and jump to a different one.

    5. Trust only yourself.

    6. Fly safe.

    1. Get an idea of the different professions in game.

    2. Try to play for fun, if you play solely for profit, the game might eat you up. It can turn into a stressful home job.

    3. Don't join a corporation that puts you under pressure. You pay for your playtime, nobody has the right to ruin it for you.

    4. You can significantly increase your profit if you at least get a basic understand of the market mechanics.

I was a rich trader in Eve when I still played so I can tell you about the mistakes that most people do:

They just sell everything for whatever price is offered. In the emptier regions (this may even include noob systems!), chances are that you'll be royally ripped off on the market if you just hit the sell button on everything. Park an alt in Jita. Prices in Jita are accurate. If you are unsure about the real value of something, check it with your Jita alt. There may be regions where your stuff sells for more than in Jita, but this is the least you should get.

Don't listen to what other people say about the market. 99% of the people I talked to didn't have a real clue about it. They make up myths about things they don't understand. (Mainly about Jita and the necessity of owning a freighter to trade successfully - it's all bull****)

Infact, if you're playing for profit, don't listen to anyone and find your own way.

    Hmm what else?

    5. If a contract looks too good to be true, it isn't good nor true. Unless you really really know how to read them. Transport contracts may have destinations you can't dock at, etc. There are some tricks. I scammed a few plex in my time. It was great. Scamming is one of the best parts of the game. Sadly it mainly consists of abusing the crappy GUI to screw over an old grandpa who forgot his glasses and thus couldn't read as well. :(

    6. NEVER (NEVER. NEVER!!!) use the trade window to trade something. There's no reason to use it. It's solely used for scamming. DON'T EVER USE IT.  There's nothing the trade window can do that contracts can't do. And contracts are safe, if you can read them.

    7. Don't mine. There's no real profit in it. Don't listen to miners, they go by the "I mined it myself so I got it for free" mentality. CCP will never fix mining bots as they're one of their biggest sources of income. If you go mining, you'll be competing against 20,000 mining bots.

They banned a bunch of them once as a PR stunt. That's all it was, a PR stunt. You'll only waste training time on mining ships. Unless you are seeking extremely low profit and an activity that could be an enjoyable screensaver - but nothing else - don't do it.

That's all I can think of for now.

I'm also returning to EvE after a very long time away (2007). I never looked into exploration much since I had heard it wasn't worth the time. Have things changed? Can exploring be rewarding both in fun and profit?

A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...

    If you like solo.

Get in a small corporation with 0% tax cause the npc corp you are now charges 11% on the rats you kill.

Mining can be somewhat profitable if you get a mining ship to 0.0 space.depends on the mining ship also.I mine only to try something diferent and break the routine.

The most profit in game for a solo carreer is ratting in a decent -0.6 or lower true sec system and exploration i think.

Yea, a 0% tax corp will save you money.

As for the rest, mining won't make you money. Not even in 0.0. Especially not in 0.0! :D

And the most profitable career is trading. Sorry man. :P
