Questions from a possible future player

WastedManWastedMan Member Posts: 3

Well, I got some time on my hands and the idea of playing this game crossed my mind. I have some questions regarding the game, if you could enlighten even if just a little, I would appreciate it.

1) How good is the story? Does it make you care and want to know more?

2) What exactly are the dynamic events? Do they happen often?

3) How are the dungeons? Diversified and well scripted?

4) I saw that there are quite a few classes in the game. Are they really so different from each other? (I'm referring to the same classes in Warrior or in Cleric, etc..)

5) What european server would you recommend? (English)

Thanks in advance ;)

  • i'm gonna start this by sayin that i love this game. i think it's the best money you can spend on a P2P mmorpg that's out right now. with that said..

!) i have no idea what the story is like but understand that the story is really good if you take the time to read it. leveling is really fast in this game as 50 content is where it's at. i burned through levels as fast as i could on my main and didn't read any of the quests at all. the questing is the normal wall of text "go kill X amount of Ys", but each zone has a story line. there are also epic quest lines that (so i've heard) are a great story.

    2) dynamic events are the "rifts" and "invasions". a tear will open up and will spawn a rift of one of 6 types of element. the rift can either be a normal rift or a harder rift. there are a lot of different rifts in game. mini invasions spawn from the rifts and will move through the world. these mini invasions may take over small outposts and set up a "foothold" which is a small base. depending on zone population and activity an invasion may break out. what happens then is a bunch of rifts start to open in a zone, mini invasions spawn all over, and you have an invasion quest objective to spawn the invasion boss and stop the invasion. these happen in all zones and including time while you level. there is public grouping and raids form very easily to take the invasions down.

    3) each instance has a story line, but i never follow them. my wife is really into it and tells me the story in Rift as a whole is amazing, but that's her opinion. i have no freekin clue lol. i do know that the instances have dialog and sometimes give us clues to what future content we may see.

    4) each class in game is completely different. its' no lie. here's a link to the Rift site talking briefly about what each calling is about: CALLINGS. the differnt playstyles are one of the reasons why i love this game.

    5) i'm NA so can't help you there, but what i would do is look up the server status of the servers during the times and days you play. can be found here: SERVER STATUS. i would stay clear from the full servers and low pop servers. go for a Medium or High pop shard. high pop should make leveling a lot easier imho.

i'd suggest getting into a decent size guild as soon as you can once you hit the major city. i think you get out of the tutorial zone at level 6 or 7. if you do the buddy program you can get a trinket that lets you level faster up to level 20 as well. here is my invite code if you want it BUDDY CODE (shameless plug lol), but if you know anyone in game i would recomend getting the code from them. helping out your friends is always a good thing. you can also check out the main trion forums for leveling builds for each class. CLASS FORUMS

i hope this helps a bit, and have fun in Telara!

    1) How good is the story? Does it make you care and want to know more?

There is masses of story content in there, its as good at selling the story  as much as you care to actually read it. Its nothing like SWTOR, but the same as every other out there. You do have some scripted story telling in chronicles (single/duo dungeons)

    2) What exactly are the dynamic events? Do they happen often?

Zone invasions, an "Event" kicks off where rifts and waves of mobs will spawn and start attacking friendly outposts. Its occurance is controlled by the zone population at certain times. Its in everyones best interest to help with the objectives as it can make questing in an overrun area a little tougher :) For example close 10 rifts, defeat 50 invasions, kill boss mob and defend warstones (outposts with npcs) during this. There are probably around 80 different types of invasion types that can occur from diferent planes (fire, life, death ect)  and some are mixed planes (mobs from diff planes can actually fight between themselves) It worth noting though that events dont havea  lasting effect on the landscape.

    3) How are the dungeons? Diversified and well scripted?

Dungeons are all very different, boss strategies are not anything unique compared to what we have seen before in other games. There are a very large ammount of dungeons to experience for a newly lauched game that will keep you going for a long time . All dungeons scale, meaning a lvl18 dungeon can be run when you are at max level.

    4) I saw that there are quite a few classes in the game. Are they really so different from each other? (I'm referring to the same classes in Warrior or in Cleric, etc..)

Within each class, there are several main roles each can still become, for example you can have a cleric tank, a mage healer, warrior dps, cleric dps, rouge support, rogue tank. The list is quite long. Each of these will perform the job (tanking for example) in very different ways. Some skills in certain souls are obviously quite similar but the variation of what you can create is immense (something like 250+ combinations) and then you can spec them in different ways inside that! If youlike playing and customizing your character to play exactly how you want, you will love it. There is no "this class is best" The ability rto be able to store upto 5 different builds is great, so if you are short of a tank, but have 2 cleric in group, 1 can switch to tanking spec and away you go. It makes finding groups brilliant, as you can queue for as many roles as your class can perform (tank/dps/supp/healer)

    5) What european server would you recommend? (English)

Currently Icewatch is the most active populated server, its where I atm. I would say jump in, and I dont think you would be disapointed. If you are looking for a large guild, look up consortium :)

    Thanks in advance ;)

Edit: also forgot to mention. Trion are putting out content at phenomenal rates, its the first ever game I have felt that I am getting my money's worth (think one update was around 3.5gb extra content, a whle new island, other games would chareg you for this type of this as an expansion). The game even at launch was almost entirely bug free and polished, so there is very little patching that needs to be done regarding fixes - and you will not even notice the maintenance down times :)

Core i5 13600KF,  BeQuiet Pure Loop FX 360, 32gb DDR5-6000 XPG, WD SN850 NVMe ,PNY 3090 XLR8, Asus Prime Z790-A, Lian-Li O11 PCMR case (limited ed 1045/2000), 32" LG Ultragear 4k Monitor, Logitech G560 LightSync Sound, Razer Deathadder V2 and Razer Blackwidow V3 Keyboard

    1) How good is the story? Does it make you care and want to know more?

No. There is a lot of story told, but it does not really come across, and certainly does not make you care. This in fact is one of the weaknesses of Rift.

    2) What exactly are the dynamic events? Do they happen often?

They are a sort of clockwork scenarios that repeat themselves every so often. They are lot of fun, but they tend to become a bit of a grind after awhile when you lose interest in them but have to do them to get tokens to buy items or materials for crafting.

    3) How are the dungeons? Diversified and well scripted?

Linear. Beautiful to look at, but little more then a couple of boss fights. No dungeon crawling whatsoever. There are about a dozen of them each with 4 levels of difficulty, but little variety between them (per dungeon).

    4) I saw that there are quite a few classes in the game. Are they really so different from each other? (I'm referring to the same classes in Warrior or in Cleric, etc..)

Yes, they are different. The warrior tank is different from the cleric or rogue tank. The mage healer is different from the cleric healer. Most dps classes I have tried feel different.

    5) What european server would you recommend? (English)

The most populated one. I don't know which one that is atm.

It takes one to know one.

    1.  Rift has the worst quest presentation of any MMORPG out there.  Most of the NPCs are disposablle with zero personalty, and even the bigger NPCs lack personality.  The quest text is very lengthy and dull to read. As others have said, its a big weakness to Rift and a very large part in why a common complaint about Rift is its soulless.

    2.  The Rifts and Invasons are great fun at first...however there is an absurd amount of repetition to them.  each zone has you doing same shit, different models.  What never gets old though is beating down a collosus at the end of a major invasion.  And its something other games dont really offer at the moment.  However they are mandatory if you are into end game and can be a grind

    3.  The first Guardan dungeon is wonderful.  Its an outdoor dungeon wth areas for the different seasons and feels fresh.  the rest f the dungeons are mostly standard (witch some pretty great visuals in some of them).  If you like WoW dungeons youll likely like rift dungeons.

    4.  There is quite a bit of variety.  All rogues and warriors use combo point systems though, which can get old and give a feeling of sameness to some people.  Also the Rift community does not really like specialization, Rift is about being a jack of all trades and master of none.

    1. Most people have said it. The story quest are in yellow and if you read them they are beyond pretty cool. The rest are filler quest. Not very many voice overs really. There are quest for legendary quest. The life saga one takes foreverrrr  and eventually ends in the first raid of the game.

    2. They are based off population in a zone and if the population is not there then they do trigger on a timer. Whoever says these events are rinse and repeat they might as be saying the same about GW2. Only way to truly make dynamic events is to use technology that thinks for itself and is basically Skynet.

Do not let any belittle the events because you surely are not going to find anything like them in any other mmo. They are also used for currency that gets you raid gear from vendors in the main cities. Noone will argue this with me because they will lose. Any youtube search will prove I am right.

I invite anyone on MMORPG.com to find me another mmo where in a zone event I have to clear some Idols...then gather some sample to remove a bosses shield...then chase a Dragon the size of the main city of the game and build catapults to shoot this dragon down...then battle that dragon along side another 100 people. Go ahead and find me that mmo.

    3. Voiceovers play a factor here again. You can tell the game was made on a limited budget and they put more money into mechanics over presentation. Some of the bosses use tactics you would expect in a raid at end game. The idea is to mold you into the end game raiding where the build up ends. Some of the instances are just visually stunning.

Caduceus Rise is a two part expert instance with 5 bosses in the lower level and 5 in the upper and is the definition of a non linear dungeon crawl. They are making a master mode raid difficulty version in 1.7 that has 11 bosses.

    4. Hard to describe because I can tell you tanking on a Warrior as a reaver is like a Blood DK in WoW where you spread diseases, then you can switch to Void Knight which is a magic mitigation tank with different rotations. Take that against a Rogue who uses Riftstalker to tank and jumps in the middle of mobs and uses mitigation. Then you have Cleric tanks who use some ungodly complicated mechanics I still have trouble understanding, but are fun as hell.

Tke the healing classes. You have a Rogue bard who heals via buffs and smaller support heals. While Mage healers are just damn beast and heal through damage and are incredible raid healers. Also you got the traditional cleric with like 3 different distinct healing souls that is hard to explain.

    5. Pick from here. Love the irony the game is better accepted in Europe then America. You can easily switch between the two sections on the launcher that allows you to pick Europe or America. I got alt on Icewatch actually, but I mainly play on Deepwood in NA.

I think everyone that answered put at least something positive in there and they certainly were all honest, and you are getting over defensive.  But you cant deny the vast majority of rifts and invasions in the game are rinse and repeat.

    How many Rifts are:

    Stage 1:  Kill x mobs

    Stage 2: Kill y mobs

    Stage 3:  Kill named

Stage 4:  Kill z mobs (made up of mobs from stages 1 and 2)

    Stage 5: Kill boss

That is literally over half the rifts in the game, if not more.  of course when Trion *did* try to change things up with stuff like the werewolf one, we were inundated with a flood of stupidity by people that couldnt figure out a simple, but cool, mechanic.

Also, most invasions involve doing these tasks:

    1. Defend wardstones

    2. Defeat x invaders

    3. Close y rifts

    4. Kill cool looking badass mob

    also you will come across

    5. Kill x (5) minibosses

    6. Bring z items to the main towns

There are very few Invasions that require steps other than these.

Now Trion is getting better at it and it would be cool if they went back and spruced up some of the original invasions and Rifts.

IMO Cleric is *by far* the class that got it right with the soul system.  Clerics can:

    Tank

    Ranged DPS

    Melee DPS

    AoE DPS

    Tradtional Heal

    HoT Heal

    Raid Heal

    Hybrid DPS/Heal at same time

    Solo

And you can really play around with the synergies a lot.  one of the most efficient AoE solo specs in the game for instance combines stuff from the tank tree, one of the dps trees, and a ranged dps tree.

They pay the price with lower overall DPS and they take more damage while tanking, but there is only one mob in the entire game where that matters.
