Day/Night cycles

Anyone a bit disappointed that day/night is not real-time? I much prefer the time of day beeing the same as in real-life. It really helps set the mood in my opinion

That would suck. Most people play at regular hours (between work/school and sleep) so you would only ever see the world in the same state.

Just like almost everything real-time in games, many players won't get to experience the stuff.

How? Nightfall doesn't come before 20.00 +, so they would get to experience both. I know I did in my time in World of Warcraft.

While nice in theory , its a disaster in reality!

First an foremost, you simply force everyone that only can play at certain time a day to only experience that part of the day. For a lot of grown ups with kids and jobs that simply means never seing anything else than Night cycle. How fun is that?

I see your concerns. I would be fine with day/night more then once a day, but I just hope it does not accelerate too fast as it does in many games that have it like that.  Like EQ2 day/night accelerates just way too fast...

Which is why they beta test these thing. To get player feedback on whether the day/night cycle is too fast or slow. They actually did give figures on what the length of each cycle was, but I can't be bothered to dig up that specific blog post and those figures have already changed.

Well I like the way ArenaNet is doing it, because the day/night cycle in the game will be far more important than most other MMORPGs because...

     - Mob spawns can change.

     - Certain events only happen during the day or night.

     - Certain weapons are effected by the day/night cycle.

So being able to experience the game during both the day & night will be important for everyone.

By the way how the hell will day/night be the same as in real life? There are different timezones for everyone.

Most mmos that include a day/night cycle accelerate it so that if someone plays at the same time every day it's not always day/night.

    doesn't work.

  • ArdnutArdnut Member Posts: 188

and just who's day/night cycle would you base it on?

everyone has different day/night time zones. unless you based a server in every time zone someone would always dip out.

as it is it's bad enough when servers go down durring european evening or prime time because, even though we have eu servers, the company takes them down when it thinks there will be less yanks who get upset about not being able to play early in the morning which is our early evening.

most of these games are based on fantasy worlds, so why expect their time cycle to be the same as rl?

it's even worse on holidays, since when do races with their own religion and life style celebrate our world holidays?

why should they celebrate things like the 4th of july in a game where they dont even have a 4th of july or christmas for that matter?

i'd realy hope that games in the future would disregard our world events and "celebrations" totaly as well as our time cycles

i look this wrecked because i've got GIST.
    Whats your excuse?

Nah real-time day/night cycles is not good idea.

I am for realistic things and for example I love sandboxy features or 'hardcore' features which many people find boring or inconveniant , but nah this is not good idea.

If it were in real time, my virtual world would never have a sun. It would be very dreary.

So they need to have at least one server in each region then don't they?

Oh and do you plan to play 12 hours a day? Its a bit unhealthy :P

Not a good idea, sucks if you can only play at night like some people do.

  • KyleranKyleran Member LegendaryPosts: 44,059

Not a good idea, especially if night time is truly dark (remember how it used to be early in DAOC's lifecycle?)

Better to keep game worlds on a 5 hour daily cycle so everyone experiences both day and night.

Many rpg and some mmo have content that only happens at night, that's no bigger and just anotther bonus.Having weapons that perform at night is something that many players will like and always be talking about, especially when you gain a new weapon. I know i loved some of the quests in the TES games that had to be done at night, the novelity never wares of with content like that for most people.

Meh, i was hoping for a "real life" day/night cycle. I really prefer the atmosphere at nightime both IRL and ingame, not really a fan of daylight (this is why i sleep all day and play video games at night)

Would be nice if we were able to choose between a 6 hour cycle or 24 hour cycle. If i want to play at night ingame all the time i dont see how this would effect the others who have a 6 hour cycle. Im so damn tired of these 6 hours cycles, WoW is almost the only MMO with a 24 hour cycle and its great imo!

Most people would still get to experience both day and night, say it becomes dark around 20-21.00 ingame and most people play from 17.00 until atleast 22.00 so i dont see the problem, but oh well.

Because it does not just affect the visual appearance of the world but also the actual gameplay?

True, but im sure they could still manage to get it working somehow. But im getting used to there only being 6 hours cycles in most MMO's nowadays. WoW was my first MMO back when it launched so guess im just used to and prefer the 24 hour cycle. I also feel its much better immerions when its a 24 hour cycle.

i got no big problems with this, so long as you play on my timezone instead of yours.

I think Day/Night Cycle should be around the average game time for one game session. I don't want too many nights pass when I'm playing.......it will feel weird.

With content that depends on the day/night cycle it would be pretty stupid to make it realtime, that doesn't mean the sun should go up and down like a jojo though.
