Is AC1 better than AC2

logangregorlogangregor Member Posts: 1,524

Well title pretty much says it all-- Im wondering if AC1 is better than AC2 and what are the biggest differences between the two games.

Also--whats the pvp like?

How long does it take to get to max lvl?

Thanks in advance

"Better" is a highly subjective term. I can tell you some of the differences, but it's up to you to decide what is better. The PvP in AC requires more physical dodging, like moving side to side, to avoid projectiles, which is a lot of fun. In AC2, it's less dodging and more about some luck, and good skill combos. You get enough skills by high level to make choices on what order of skills you use against your opponent.

For both games, it takes years and years to reach max level. The max in AC is 275, and AC2 is 150, but in AC2 it probably takes even longer to level because levels are slower to come. I think it's cool that you can virtually never stop advancing.

The combat is different for each game. In AC, it's more about trying to handle groups of monsters. In AC2, it's about managing single or smaller groups of monsters. Both styles are fast-paced and fun.

Both games are great, but some people love one and hate the other, so neither is actually better. My favorite is AC, but I recommend trying both games.

It is now after the ToD graphics update.

I left AC a year ago after having played for four years straight, the great graphics update is bringing lots back to the game, so I'm going back too.

AC2 for me just lacks, and is depressing for the avid AC1 player. Finding your favorite towns from ac1 destroyed and mob camped is just sad, and you can't actually go in any of the buildings like in ac1. Not to mention to player housing in ac2.

It doesn't take years to get to max level pre ToD.  You could reach 126 in a month easy.  In ToD, the level cap has been raised and for now there aren't any bots.  Now is the best time for new or returning players to come back to Asheron's Call!

I don't see what is bad about taking years to reach max level. If I reached max level in one month, the game would be pretty much done for me.

Well--about the max level thing-- Its not that I want to reach max level so much as I want to be a high enough level to pvp.

Currently Im trying out shadowbane again and Im bored all over again--good game but the player base is growing smaller and smaller. I tried anarchy online for like 2 mins and couldnt get into it. Once my free trial with shadowbane is over Im gonna give asherons call free trial a test drive and see what I think.

Which game do you think is more fun overall ac1 or ac2.

The game Im really looking forward to but wont be here for some time is Dark Fall Online---ooo that will be good.

AC1 is better but both games have large grinds especially if you want to PvP. The PvP in AC1 is great though and well worth it.

I had 4 level 50 chars in AC2 prior to the patch that increased the max level and I sold the account for $500.  Decent game but had a terrible launch.  Couldn't even chat in allegiance/party/global/local/private chat for months.  Lag was terrible and at the time there was alot of bugs that let people exploit (perch) mobs getting tons of xp without any danger.  When I played AC2 there wasn't any competition imo that was worth playing.  I played DAoC for a while but I found that to be really boring. SWG just plain out sucked.

Playing AC2 now is a joke.

There are much better games out on the market that totally blow AC2 out of the water.  I.E. World of Warcraft.

WoW is a great game but is not ment for hardcore players.  You can hit max level very very very quick.   Some would say that once you hit 60 there is a ton of stuff to do but in all honesty.... If you are a hardcore player then you will breaze through all the stuff pretty quick.  As for now the only thing to do as 60 is MC/Onyxia and Battlegrounds.

Ok back to the main question.

What do I think is more FUN overall ac1 or ac2?

The answer is AC1.   AC1 was my first mmorpg.  I then moved onto *in order* EQ, DAoC, AC2, SWG, FFXI, WoW, EQ2, Eve (free trial), CoH (free trial) and now I'm back to AC1 and am really enjoying it.

    Breath of fresh air.

If you are looking for a great community, fun and SKILLED pk... then play Asheron's Call.  The game starts off kinda slow if you are totally new but once you get a few levels... You will get a hold of it pretty easy.  Now that there aren't any bots around.... AC1 requires a good amount of dedication to level up.  More so then many other mmorpgs.... but managable if you are hardcore.

If you are looking for a game for casual players.  Try out WoW.

Darktide has dungeons with experience levers where you can get to level 110 in about 2 weeks. They added those so that new entrants to Darktide don't fall too far behind. Being level 110 in this game is very competitive. It's not very level dependant. At level 110, you have a fair chance at killing a level 200 if you are good and lucky.

Having not played AC1 (tried the free trial of AC2 and could not get into it at all...got through the tutorial and had no desire to continue) I'm wondering what makes the game fun? Is the combat good? Are their lots of quests? Are the quests interesting? Are their world events? Anything you can tell me would help. Thanks!

AC1 cannot be judged by AC2.  Very different dynamics.  AC1 has been ongoing for over 5 years now and with the release of ToD will keep going for quite awhile.  TONS of quests to do.  Non stop.  My allegiance goes on quests almost every night.  So many different items to get that you don't see everybody running around with the same armor on or one particular "uber" item.  Monthly updates are awesome and the storyline constantly evolves.  But you don't even have to get into the storyline if you just wanna go out and kill some creatures or do some cool quests.  Some world events see cities completely decimated and then rebuilt slowly.  And then they have quests related to destroying the forces that destroyed that city.  Just awesome!  Been doin this sorta thing from the beginning of the game right up until now!  I'm not even going to get into the community, cause it's so hard to explain how great it is!  Definately should try AC1!

  • KaneKane Member Posts: 780

Can you actually get into these world events right from the beginning or do you have to work up to it? The one thing I do like about WoW and EQ2 is that you generally are never just grinding mobs but always have a quest to do while your killing. Is it this way in AC1? Thanks.

Well to be honest, the game is full of elitest members now.  Level 126+.  But these are people who have played the game for 5 years and deserve these high ranks.  Every event that takes place has quests that revolve around it.  Some are lower level and restricted to chars below a certain level while others are restricted to higher levels.  Lower level prizes aren't as good, but that should be expected.  The best quests come around level 80 which takes some time to get too and you'll have to do some mob grinding to get up there, but it's something to work for.  I found it a lot of fun and a great challenge to get to level 80 so I could do most of the quests with my allegiance.  But Turbine tries they're best to make world events important to chars of all levels.

AC1 is better than AC2 in my opinion. I really Liked the PvP its more challenging that most mmorpg's PvP. What I really miss about it is the spell research, but still is a very good game. And unlike most mmorpgs no loading zones except in dungeons and they are not that bad. I played four years, and have some great memories of dereth.

Well, of course this is all just each persons opinion, but I played AC1 a month or 2 after release and only it for about 3 years.  I loved it, but then the macro's came, both ACM(attended combat macro and UCM (unattended combat macro).  And as for the pvp...it was always a joke, at least for me.

Then AC2 came out and I tried it and it really sucked.  The graphics were awesome, but chat was borked big time.  A year later, I picked up AC2 and installed it again and havent stopped since.  Cant even get back into AC1, have tried a couple of times, but just cant do it.  No macros, ok there are a couple of bots online that will heal your vitae, but you can do that easily without one.

The combat system is sooo much more complex and exciting to me that AC1 was.  Very few vulns to cast, almost no buffing for your toon....no more 3-5 minutes spent buffing stuff.

PvP is getting pretty good now.  Turbine made a few changes a couple of months ago that really made a difference, and this next patch in August is bringing the chance to go "red" for KvK (kingdom vs. kingdom) fighting anywhere on the worlds.

Not to mention the 5 different races with something like 11 different classes to choose from.  Hybrids are even getting viable again.

The chat system is now one of the best in all of the market, IMO.  The lore is getting much better now as well.  Grouping is going to be boosted in August prop and here is a link to the teaser http://ac2.turbine.com/index.php?page_id=373  and the Letter to the Players goes into detail as to what changes are being made in the patch can be found here http://ac2.turbine.com/index.php?page_id=377

I think you can also get a free trial to AC2 as well.  Give them both a try and enjoy.

I dont think you played on darkide my friend. ac's PvP Is probably the best out there.  it requires Skill not luck; unlike most mmorpgs PvP. I never Played on any of the care bear servers (non PvP).  You can become Pk player killer those servers, but there are few who do. Darktide is not for the Faint hearted.

hehe Bakon I think your in the minority. But this is the AC1 forum so maybe its a bit biased.

I really wish AC1 had a free trial--as it is now only AC2 has a free trial.

To the person that said WoW is a better game--yyyyyyyyeah ok sure whatever.
There is nothing more retarded and ridiculous than a 40 man raid for PVE. The most difficult class to play well in pvp is still no where close to the best pvp toon-- Warlock. WoW had the coolest CC abilities with sheep and fear and aoe fear. But then they give every class a way to get out of the CC by way of potion or trinket or class ability--so dumb. Finally WoW's Battlegrounds are NOT pvp....not even close.
Saying wows battlegrounds are pvp is like saying that appetizers are a full dinner.

Im done with wow--done with shadowbane--done with daoc and done with Guild Wars.
Gonna try AC2 Saga of Ryzom and Asherons Call.
Hopefully Ill find a game that will last me till Dark Fall Online or some of the other anticipated mmo's come out.

hehe logangregor, I am in the minority.  many people have never even heard of AC2.  and Lildemonmzin, your right, i havent spent much time on darktide.  i do have a couple of toons on DT in AC2 but not very high lvl atm.  but i am definiately a carebear   image.  but the kvk stuff is pretty fun.  oh well, have a good one all image

The only valid complaint I hear alot of--about AC1 is the micromanagement involved in buffing and buffing weapons and armor and mana stones. Sounds like alot of work.

    What do you guys think?

I don't have a problem with it now, but it used to be something of a chore. You used to have to cast on/charge each individual piece of equipment you were wearing. These days, you just target yourself and do it all at once. They've come a long way in that regard.
