Taming Animals

ZaradisZaradis Member Posts: 241

I've said this in a previous thread but i thought i might as well suggest it here and since the devs come here often i'm willing to actually give in some of what i enjoyed from ultima online.

I always like the ability to tame animals in, Ultima Online. It was neat how you could tame a sheep or some wild horses in the wilderness taming them and then having the possability of riding them or killing it and making some meat, and you could also put them in stable before you log off.

It would be neat to have some kind of farmer ability you could tame animals, butcher them for meat to give to cooks or you could sell the wild horses or whatever type of wierd creatures you've found and sell them, grow crops etc etc ...  so basically you'd be a hunter/farmer/tamer giving you alot to do when your tired of killing stuff go to the market grow  some food (real time) while your waiting for that go out and try to tame animals and for your stable to sell...

if you don't want to do that you can join your friends and bring your (wolf...whatever vicious animal you tame) and hunt with your friends..

what do you guys/gals think of this idea?

P.S. pay no mind to this thread since  i'm just throwing the idea around it doesnt seem like it will have this kind of option..just throwing the suggest of it around image

In DragonRealms Rangers could tame animals like racoons through a quest where you had to lure them out in the open then raise them from infancy. then they would do things for you like carry messages. Also to own a horse you had to have a Ranger Find one and tame (Brake it) it for you. Perhaps (I hope) we'll see this type of thing in HJ.

That would be awesome!  I would do that in Hj

I hope so it seems that those type of games where you raise an animal to adults is rather popular it just adds a whole other game when you get tired of slashing monsters or if crafting weapons isnt your thing

My two favorite things about Star Wars: Galaxies were the detailed appearance options in character creation and the process of finding, taming and raising creature offspring as a creature handler. From what I've heard, pets will scale with players as they level, which is a terrific thing. World of Warcraft and SWG both had severe issues with scaling that made pets obsolete at a certain point. This was usually caused by the fact that pets and players scaled so differently.

In SWG, players could easily bring down the fiercest pets in a matter of seconds, which made creature handlers essentially non-factors in pvp. In World of Warcraft, equipment played such a massive role in the game, particularly the endgame, that pets couldn't even survive most level 60 dungeons. The difference between a level 60 player in standard gear and a level 60 pet was large; the difference between a level 60 player in instance gear and a level 60 player in standard gear was monumental. As a result, anything challenging enough for a level 60 player was certain death for a level 60 pet. Bad design.

Apparently, we'll also have control over the appearance of at least our first pet in HJ. I'm not sure how it's going to work, but I know I read that players would be able to design their pets much like they design their character, though I don't know if that'll be possible after creation. My guess is that it'll be like the "outfit" system in that you'll start out with something that you designed, and you'll have options to upgrade it with new data that you come across; when you upgrade your pet's statistics (or in this case, maybe attack types or something), you'll also have an option of whether to change its appearance or keep it the same.

That's all just guesswork on my part, but it sounds reasonable from what I've read. I do sort of hope the process of raising a creature from infancy exists in some form, however. That really did make it more of an investment, which in turn made the creature seem more like an actual pet than a piece of code. Of course, the issue that came up with the whole "pet raising" system in SWG was pvp. An average player who got killed in pvp just had to repair their armor, while a creature handler had to spend seven days finding and raising another pet. That's something that'll need to be kept in mind, also, as development of the game's pvp aspect moves along.

I was a SWG creature handler until they got rid of it. ::::11:: I loved spending hours looking around dangerous planets for babies of the rarest creatures, and then trying to figure out how to tame them without getting killed by their parents (or them, lol). I really hope they have something like that in HJ.::::28::

Here are my suggestions for the pet system:

    Pet limits:
No limit to the number of pets you can own. The number of pets you can have active at once is limited by some sort of point system (like in SWG). There will be some "social" pets (e.g. wolves, rodents, oversized insectoids, etc.), that work better when there are others of their type around. Inactive pets can be kept in a stable, where you can go in and look at them or change pets. Larger towns get one stable each, and each player gets his/her own instance, sized according to your number of pets with no one else's pets in your stable (mounts could also be kept there). You can also buy a stable like you would any other building, and can bring guests into your stable with you.

    Pet acquisition:
Pets can be tamed, bought from other players, or bought from vendors. Vendors will only sell the more basic pets, however, so you'll have to do some taming to get the best ones. Taming is done in a manner similar to SWG. Like in SWG, only one class (Druids?) are able to tame pets, and only they are able to use the best pets. There may be some quest required to gain the ability to tame animals (like in Saga of Ryzom). They could also include breeding, though that would likely be more in the updates than in the initial release. Breeding was much desired by Creature Handlers in SWG, but SoE never implemented it.

    Pet customization/growth:
They've already announced this, and I like it. The pets are customizable and will gain your choice of skills as they level.

If they do something like this, they'll get basically the entire Creature Handler base from SWG. This would be very desirable, not only because of all the players who'd be joining, but also because Creature Handlers were among the most mature of the player base of SWG due to the high level of patience and dedication required to do it effectively.

I've always loved that idea. The Monster Rancher games were some of my favorites. With SOE, my biggest concern was that it would be almost impossible to properly balance the huge range of possible outcomes involved in combining different creatures. Given Simutronics' army of GMs, however, it might not be unthinkable.

Selective breeding? Trial and error of pets and such until you get the desired benefits?

    Interesting.

It would actually be slightly akin to BioEngineering in SWG. Each pet has certain attributes (random within a range in each species) and breeding mixes them with a slight chance of having a better outcome.

I'd love it if certain skins were only available via breeding, too (breed a spined reptile with a winged reptile and get a spiny, winged reptile). I can understand why that would be a low priority (art tends to take quite a bit of production time, so you want to focus the art team on things that will be seen/used by as many players as possible); still, something like that would really keep me engaged for a long time.

To me it seams that HJ is trying to streamline the "fun=-factor" as CoH does. Somewhere in one of these interview somewhere, they mentioned that you will have animal companions, but its going to be more permanent then you might expect in other games, its gonna be like another character. I can't see them justifying more then one pet when you're going to be putting much more time and customization into that pet then you would in any other game. Just like what they're talking about with the weapon and armor and leveling system.

All in all, i'd say expect to have one pet at a time (And maybe keep that pet the entire game play) as you level him up and customize him, as seems to the be theme of the game. Also, I expect pets to be more a companion creature (As a ranger might have) because this game is about BEING the hero, not having a pet that does all the heroics.
