Awesome thanks for the heads up.
Wow. This is kind of absurd. If your just going to have people choosing these default builds and putting the points for them then why even bother having talent trees. One more reason to not go back to rift. Its just a gear treadmill now. Sit in town queue up for everything, and have the game tell you the best thing to do. Awesome.
I may be exagerating (MAYBE), but I think this feature is stupid.
Read the 2nd paragraph:
"There will be those that decry this new feature as promoting cookie-cutter builds or being unnecessary handholding. While there may be some merit to their argument, I would caution them to remember that this is simply a tool and it could be very useful for newer players and for those that have stuck to one role their entire Rift career and are looking for guidance on how to branch out. "
You seen the dungeon journal in WoW or the CODEX in TOR. Same concept. Technically this is Trion giving the middle finger to the people saying this build is the cookie cutter for x number patch.
If you are new to the game and you are looking for help and goto the forums, but you only see the FOTM stuff and would you try and debate this stuff with people who seem to know it better? I think it helps new people out alot and basically lays it out how to play a build.
It is still only 15 out of 1,000's of combinations lol
Dammit! I keep eyeballing that year sub... and you guys are making it hard. I missed the free weekend.... so the idea of dabbling....
(le sigh)
To Rift or not to Rift.
the reason I quit this game a while back was because the higher level you got the more people expect you to spec a certain way for your build. and I found that many already follow guides available online which makes them a cookie cutter class not by choice but by peer presure! Yes there are those that let you play the way you want to and spec the way that you see fit to your play style but you finde which are the best people to group with or join in their guild.
When I was a new player I first rolled a cleric and got yeld at many times that I should have speced this way or that way and made me feel like I was doing something wrong.
Then I decided hey I can't deal with this so I rolled a mage and went with the easy rout of going Pyro, but the higher level I got I found many ecpected me to spec a certain way again to deal max damage with is the Pyro+pet route.
Now this makes it a little easier for me, and instead of going back and forth between the game and a third party website to figure out the most accepted and best spec for the role I'm playing, I can just open up this guide and follow it. and if I wanna play and spec based on my choices later on I can just not use it and spec as I see fits.
Concedering going back to the game now after many months of absence! and this game might become my second MMO beside GW2 hopefully.
The arguements that Rift at end game promotes cookie-cutter builds is flat out inaccurate. 1.6 patch alone allows 3-4 viable end game raid tank builds and that is just in the warrior class.
This is just the arguement of those on the outside looking in.
Now if you are the player that completely ignores being an asset in a group, would rather build your toon based off of your own interpretation of an effective build and choses to be oblivious to the ton of work and info others have done then ya the end game of Rift forces you into a cookie cutter build.
I play a warrior, each toon can have 5 different builds/specs utilizing 9 different souls. I have 3 tank builds and 2 dps builds all of which are unique and equally viable for end game grouping or raiding.
Interesting. I also felt that such a tool was needed to give new players some guidance, because I've seen so many terrible players with terrible builds and I find it so hard to suggest them better builds, without coming across as rude or an Elitist. Well time to rate these builds out of /5, seeing how in touch with the community the Rift devs are.
Cleric
Flame Keeper (5/5) - The standard Main Tank healer spec that pretty much all cleric use at this point and hasn't really changed since the beginning.
Seraphic Guard (N/A) - Never tanked with cleric before.
Thunderer (4/5) - Good spec for melee dps, but cleric melee dps has never been too hot.
Arbiter (5/5) - I use this spec, nuff said.
Mage
Gravelord (3/5) - This is primarily a leveling spec and it needs less emphasis on the Necro tree.
Chlorolock (5/5) - I use this spec, nuff said.
Pyromentalist (N/A) - Don't know if this spec is still as good as it used to be.
Stormrunner (5/5) - Love this spec, though I prefer the name "Hot Water".
Rogue
Hunstman (3/5) - Good for someone that loves pets, but it sucks compared to 51 Marksmen.
Shadow Stalker (1/5) - WTF is the AsStalker build doing here?
Teleporting Defender - (4/5) - It's ok I guess, but too many points in Bladedancer.
Battle Bard - (0/5) - If it's not a 51 Bard then why bother. F-
Warrior
Destroyer - (4/5) - A good starter build. Allows a player room for tweaking.
Rathfinder - (N/A) - Never bothered with a Warrior pet class.
Defender - (2/5) - Needless points in both Paladin & Warlord. No point going above 32 in Pally and 16 in Warlord.
Dark Theme - (5/5) - Pretty much every raiding warrior tank is running this spec.
Well seems good overall but they have to look at the rouge premades.
I thought the whole draw of Rift was being able to make your own class....now they pick up more handholding and issue out builds for you? i dont get it.
Sure, it helps new players, but they are NEW players. they have to learn. usually first build isn't jusssst right, so it entices you to reroll at the end and therefore keeps you subscribed that much longer. don't get it. but i havent played rift in six months or so.
The Deep Web is sca-ry.
The presets just seems to be for level 50s, so you'll still have to level with your terrible build and once you reach 50, have the option to change to a preset.
LINK they aren't killer 50 builds or anything. they builds have two reasons. first is for the people leveling. you can break down the necro/lock for example and it will suggest where to place soul points to help new leveling players who feel overwhelmed with the soul system. the second is for level 50s to get an idea of different soul combos to try and give them an understanding of builds in general. that link i posted has all the info and all the dev posts. none of the builds are the best builds. they're just there to help the brand new players get an idea of how the game works, and give new 50s an entry into 5 mans without having to read the forums for hours and hours. if they want to min/max and have the best build, they're gonna have to work for it and hit up the forums like everyone else. again, it's just for entry level players. new players 1-50, new alts 1-50, and brand new 50s.
I think this is an interesting move and very supportive feature, but i'm not shure about Trion's real intention behind it.
I can imagine some players being overwhelmed by all the possibilities and appreciate a little guidance. Perhaps this feature aims at the upcoming mass influx of players Trion has set up the tons of trial servers for. Making it easier for the newcomers to get right in and not leave them fiddling around with choices for too long.
On the other hand i'm a bit concerned that this may be a first step to sort of dump down the soul system in it's diversity. Wouldn't be the first time we see something like this in an mmo. Maybe Trion realized that the recources they have to throw at balancing the whole monster are needed to spend elsewhere.
I wouldn't be surprised if the addon contains some change for the soul system.
Oh, just checked the link and you're right. The good thing about the builds is that they are usuable and not complete garbage. Well except maybe the "Battle Bard". They also leave room for tweaking and min/maxing. Shame it wasn't implemented before though, like in Patch 1.3 or something.
^This is what's wrong with MMO genre^
