In Game Advertisements?

Anyone who remembers back when anarchy online was around, can remember when they had in game advertisements.  It gave the game a very diffrent feel and usually fit into the game quite well, aside from the fact that AO was based so far into the future and the advertisements were sometimes for present day things....anyway

Given how theyve done it before, and how this game is going to be present day....do you think real advertisements, like bill boards with actual products/services and having bigscreen tv in cities playing an ad....do you think doing this would add to the games feel of being "real" or does it take away from the game experience for you?

Personally if done right i think it adds to the game only if it fits the scenery and lore of the game.  Worked in anarchy since they had billboards and tv screens anyway, and it gave certain areas a metropolis feel, however didnt work so well in some "backwater" areas in that game.  Also some of the ads in AO certainly didnt fit the futuristic lore

there is a very long thread in the official foruns discussing it, almost everyone there was favorable to in-game advertisements...

I'm almost sure that it is going to happen... and I like it!

If it is done right im all for it. Its background noise for the most part.

Since TSW takes place in modern times all in game Ads can do is tie it in a way to the real world making the game world seem more concrete.

The best would have been that the advertisement would bring so much do that we gamers could play for free. That would have been awesome :D. But I fear that it's not very likely to happen... :)

I have no problems with real world in-game ads as long as they are done right and not overly in your face.

It can really add alot to immersion. Sports games for instance are probably the best genre for this. I would much prefer ads in the Stadiums that read "Pepsi or "AIG" instead of fake ones or even just the parent game company like Tiburon or EA.

For TSW they should make full use of this and place ads on billboards, pop machines, and maybe even have real stores like a McDonalds, KFC, Safeway, Best Buy etc. As long as they dont overdo it and have these ads absolutely everywhere then im all for it.

Yup, I recall seeing them in AO and Hellgate London, personally I don't mind them at all.

We either dont mind them or prefer them to fake adds in games where they fit and add to immersion. Whats the difference between fake adds and real ones anyways? May as well go with real ones so it puts money into the developers pockets and results in a better funded game= More content

Everyones adding a cash shop these days anyways. TSW is gonna have one. Long as its fluff I could care less really. Adventure packs dont bother me in the least as long as I get it for free as part of my subscription.

Funny you mention Pandas since those are in a game with no cash shop or in game adverts anyways. But you were just trying to be funny here and failing miserably so I'll just let it slide.

Im inclined to agree with the mojority that is posting. It would be cool to see them added into the game but like you all said before Not over the top and Not in you're face .

Put the adds in the background so you dont really even register they are there.

In-game ads are tolerable wheb the game is f2p. Because the devs as to get paid anyhow. (same as ads on websites like mmorpg.com)

But why should i pay a 15€/month sub if Funcom get ads money ??

More money = more people making content = more  free patches.

That is not necessarily true.  They could take any revenue made from those ads and then reinvest them into the game/devs to do as you said.  But they could also just as easily take those same revenues and pocket them w/o reinvesting them.  We just don't know at this point which way they'll go.

I agree with most others in the thread. If done well, and in a way that contributes to the environment rather than distracting from it I see no reason why they shouldn't cash in this way. Much better than the idiocy that was the Mountain Dew Battle-bot in WoW.

In fact, even fake ads can be entertaining- I know I enjoyed quite a few of them from the radio stations in the GTA series.

I don´t mind a few posters and similar stuff but if they add too much the game really should have lower fee or be B2P.

  • SEANMCADSEANMCAD Member EpicPosts: 16,775

20 million dollars was the cost of EQ2. 6 hours of sit coms cost 20 million dollars.

If all the extra revenue can create better games I am all for it. i dont mind if the billboard is real add or fake

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Ads in modern or close future / cyberpunk game if done right and not too much are very ok.

What is wrong with TSW is that they already have sub + CASH SHOP.

If it were to replace the shop then I'm absolutely for it, I fear that's unlikely though.

One; it adds to the atmosphere, two; it brings in cash for funcom/ea. (Might even be able to reduce monthly costs with it, or produce better quality content.)

    All for it.

Played - M59, EQOA, EQ, EQ2, PS, SWG[Favorite], DAoC, UO, RS, MXO, CoH/CoV, TR, FFXI, FoM, WoW, Eve, Rift, SWTOR, TSW.
