    nervous!

i dont want them to destroy this IP. Firefly was awesome and it can definitely be made into a mmo, but not everyone will be Mal. i would rather they just leave it alone.

For all I love Firefly I just can't see it working as an MMO, especially without truck loads of cash behind it. IT would have been much more suited to a single player game.

Edit - Just realised the acronym for it F.U. Online

I love Firefly and I really hope they can pull this off.  The world has so much scope and depth to explore that Fox never let Whedon do it and shut it down before the series had a chance to show what it was about.

Absolutely love Firefly, but I can't see this working. I'll keep an eye on development, but I don't have high hopes.

    Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN

    Three words....

    Battlestar Gallactica Online....

This is what I fear.  And will ruin the IP.

Given how Whedon totally dissed the recent effort by fans to buy the rights to Firefly and put it back into production, Im guessing they will likewise not be very encouraging about this MMO.

I always felt lukewarm towards Firefly . It seamed to be very generic and I was'nt over suprised when the series got cancelled . I was suprised then to see a movie be made following that ,then was'nt over suprised when it did only moderatly in the box office . I'm suprised again that someones trying raise this franchise from the dead again but  wont be suprised when it falls flat on its face or never gets made . Don't think much of Whedons output either (Buffyverse aside) I hope he does'nt mess up the Avengers movie .

Firefly fan here. SCI channel (cable - DISH) has the series repeats regularly and all TV episodes on Sunday (6-26 I think) advertised. Don't know the legal/business requirements for an IP nor the Unauthorized 'fair use' legal concept. Work had already gone on from another company and this group says they are a group of Indie developers. Present locations are China, Panama and Europe with English only for a launch. They show a fair amount of background work on their webpage and have a hiring spot. They explain that they have not yet selected an engine.

I think Firefly as an MMO is certainly feasible but I am a retired game designer and have numerous ideas for ways it could be presented of course (can't help it). As a matter of fact there are many areas where Firefly components fit quite well into MMO design parameters, speaking as a professional game designer. Not really a problem, only deciding which ones will be used. I would remind folks that one of the primary pulls of Firefly was the story and writers for the show as well as the imaginative environment that was generated within a TV budget. I also devoutly hope this will not be just a browser game but that is strictly a personal point of view, not professional.

A couple of posters above have already pointed out some tough things (technical, economic, physical plant, personel and the many adjuncts to an operating business required for creating and launching an MMO. I still wish them luck and will keep an eye on them as time goes bye (shades of Humphry Bogart)!

The concept can work out well enough..

Just imagine it like eve.. the wild west in space... rob from others to serve your faction

I've been dreaming of a Firefly based MMORPG for years.  While some won't be happy if they can't play the actual characters from the abruptly terminated tv series (who else here wanted to firebomb Fox Studios when they dumped it for the pathetic "The O.C."), there are those of us who just want to LIVE in that possible future.

I loved SWG pre-cu for that very reason.  I was a fencer / bio-engineer and could really care less about the factional war going on.  I just wanted to explore, craft, do occasional group PvE (land & space) missions and interact with others in the Star Wars universe (no, I wasn't an R.P.-er).  While it was fun to occasionally encounter the actual main characters from the movies, it wasn't my prime interest and actually started the beginning of the end for the game, changing over to iconic-based gameplay.

I see the Firefly universe being rich and fertile for creativity and immersion.  There were lots of newly settled worlds and if done right, space could be as rich as games like SWG's Jump To Lightspeed.

One game kinda comes to mind being Fallen Earth.  While I enjoyed playing it, with it being an apocolyptic Earth, the landscapes were just repeating and teadious, barren and drab.  Combine in a space travel element and other worlds with rich diversity and I think it could be an IP to last.

Kudos to Farscape (I too loved that series) but I don't think it lends itself as well as an MMORPG like Firefly would.  It was too diverse and spread out.  With Firefly humanity was still just expanding into the galaxy and alien civilizations hasn't been encountered yet most likely due to the extremely vast distances - a very real possible scenerio.

As others have voiced, my hope would be that this is done right and not some craptasic browser-based FPS.  I would like to see Joss onboarded for his awesome creative talents both to keep continuity with the tv-series & movie, and also to see where that vision was heading before Fox pulled the plug.

    Ever optimistic,

I know nothing is sacred, but still, this is disappointing. Not even Valve could do this IP justice.

Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

I don't know who they are but they obviously have no clue about Firefly.. 4 factions ???

how can there even be factions in the game? the Browncoats were a number of independent worlds that rebelled and tried to keep their independance.. they lost.. and were disbanded.. those that survived anyway....  the Reavers.. clinically insane cannibals with a serious fetish for self mutilation....seriously i can see loads of players wanting to be one of those..  the Union.. powerful military reprenting the core worlds..  and besides the reavers, the only ones with armed ships.. rather than being a faction they would represent a force that the players would have to manoever around.. or just plain flee from..  as for megacorporations.. how could that possibly be limited to a single faction.. when they all have individual and probably conflicting interests..

there is only one thing thats clear about the proposed MMO.. the devs have not got a clue. image

Yeah, I'm kind of in the same boat.  If this was a Whedon brainchild, I'd be all over it, but I'm pretty pessimistic as it stands.  I'll definitely investigate it when it comes out though.  I mean hell ... it's Firefly.  It's hard to get enough.

Okay everybody, instead of being so critical and pessimistic, now's our chance to help DarkCryo make Firefly Universe Online the game WE, the fans, want it to be.

DarkCryo has stated from the beginning their plan has been to make this MMO a game FOR the fans, BY the fans (DarkCryo is a company formed by fans).

So let's hold them to task.  Currently on their website they have a LONG, 63 question survey asking US, the fans, how the game should play.  Every question has a few radio-button choices as well as a text box to add comments to futher explain your position.  Be aware those comments are publically viewable by everyone who completes the survey (glad I wasn't too harsh!).

The questions range from basic game mechanics, should the timeline evolve or stay static, how to handle death & looting, environmental variables (how harsh should space be on your ship?), to yes, playable factions.

Plus I found they have a Facebook page with similar discussions in which DaryCryo is very active as well.

As I said when I first found out about this, I myself would LOVE to play an MMO based on this "universe", and I think it's awesome that I can help mold it into the game that "I" want to play.

perhaps the best advice to give them, would be to actually watch the entire series, and the film.. at least then they'd know what it was actually about..  at the moment im not even sure they've watched a single episode... image

Sorry, I wanted to mention that the comments to the survey, while publically viewable (again only to people who have completed the survey), are still anonymous.

Clearly you did not spend much time on their website, nor fill out their survey.  Based on what I ahve read so far I would say they are very knowledgable on the Firefly Verse.

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

    Wrong series!

"This is the captain. We have a...little problem with our engine sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then...explode."

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
