Try Shiaya from Aeria Games. I had it running well on Celeron 1.5, Windows 2000, 256 megs.
Another is GuildWars (1). Looks amazing, runs on a toaster-oven.

Anarchy Online is an amazing game and the original without the expansions content is 100% free to play. It's my personal all-time favorite mmo It's from 2001 so I would imagine it will run on your pc.
You also may want to try Asheron's Call (another of my favorite classics).
Everquest and Ultima Online are still around as well and if your pc can't run either of those then you seriously need a new computer lol.

Wow runs on super low specs. I can play it on my crappy work computer fine.
If WoW doesnt run, it's because your laptop doesnt have a 3d graphics card, which means you won't be able to play any 3d MMO well.
Go for 2D then.

If you can barely run WoW then I suggest you just play some browser based games.

Could always try out DAoC or EQ 1.
I think DAoC has a free trial and EQ is going F2P i think. So wont cost anything to try em.
Anarchy Online or Asherons call may be worth a look as well. I wouldnt get my hopes up tho if you cant run WoW on lowest settings.
