Pet Peeve
noun
a particular and often continual annoyance; personal bugbear:
I have a new one.
Here's some context first. So I discovered a new gaming / comic book shop today and hopped in to shop around and talk MTG, DnD, and the usual nerdness. A group were playing an elaborate game of Star Wars miniatures and it looked cool.
They kept laughing and talking about events I wasn't apart of so I didn't pay much mind. But they kept saying "so-tor" or "sew-tor". It took a few moments for me to realize that's their chit chat abbreviation for "SWTOR". I had to leave.
Sure "WoW" and a few other acronym based verbal words are expected in the community. But just call it TOR "tore" or such. SO-tor.. Two syllables ;bleh;.. I didn't expect it to bug me as much as it did. LoL
SO what's your MMO-related peeves?
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

Premade loot and loot drop tables. It's stupid to go fight such and such boss for that one drop that every class like you is wearing. Where is the true randomized loot? Wonder why people are still playing Diablo II? That's why! Give us that kind of loot that has a chance to drop off anything, and then give us our dungeons and bosses to kill, and let us have some fun!
Friends call 'em "Sweater."
Forum users and characters with horrid names.

My MMO pet peeve?
Potential:
po·ten·tial
Definition of POTENTIAL
1: existing in possibility : capable of development into actuality <potential benefits>
2: Excuse fanbois of badly made MMOs will use to tout how great their POS game is.
A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...
Like MMOMan? That's pretty shameful.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
LoL But it makes for such a fine open-ended argument / discussion.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
Potential is and has always been just a nice way of saying "Failing to deliver expectations."
Ever have a parent or teacher tell you when you were a kid that you have "so much potential"? What they meant was, you don't apply yourself, you're lazy, and you have zero excuse for your lack of performance.
Sound familiar? BioWare, maybe?
I actually really came to a firm decision in SWeaTOR that mobs standing around waiting for me to kill them is my biggest pet peeve. Seriously I'm blowing your friends up with rockets/lightning/swishy sabers five feet away from you, and you aren't going to help? Lame.
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
That I'm too lazy/unmotivated to write one.
Invisible walls over crap like hand rails that I cant jump over.... god that pisses me off.
"Don't mistake a fun game for a good game... Checkers is fun to play but its not exactly the highest point of gaming design... and definatly not worth $60 plus $15 a month"
I dislike and it's opposite; super floaty loafty jumping. I'd like to see MMOs take environment interaction into more account with vaulting and some real animation. But I do realize that comes at a cost.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
Guy I know pronounces MMORPG "muh-mor-puh-guh". That peeves me.
Almost everyone who plays LoL....
those are some mean mean people... even when they are not playing and you are like in Vent with them or something.
I wish they would just calm..... down.....
"Don't mistake a fun game for a good game... Checkers is fun to play but its not exactly the highest point of gaming design... and definatly not worth $60 plus $15 a month"
people who type out lawl
Any form of elite speak...ever
Non-RP names on RP servers
Using already overused meme's (kthxbai, umad, etc.)
That's terrible. I just started playing and have only had good conversations with people honestly. I'm sure at more competitive levels it'll get worse.
There's not nearly enough "you're doing this wrong" in the game like I had anticipated. Another peeve of mine.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
People snacking or chewing while they talk on Ventrilo.
The mage who rolls on a two-handed sword.
The guy who sits at the auction house while he wears his Collector's Edition items 7 years after launch.
Stupid names, e.g., Gankenstein, LOLSROYCE, Lolcano, SkillClinton, etc.
People who RUSH to the end of the game.
Twinks
I'm at the point now where I just avoid my guild and do my own thing...until I'm content with my gaming experience or am maxed out.
This. This is certainly the most annoying. It makes the game feel "plastic" and cheap.
Games that take no time at all to hit end game. I like really slow leveling curves so I can enjoy the journey, not most MMOs crappy endgame.
My number 1 pet peeve is...
MMOs that only focus on one aspect as their selling point.
What I mean by this is ever since WoW all MMOs did was copy the formula and enhance in one aspect, they didn't try to enhance the overall formula to produce different outcomes and as well as a different story. That's how MMOs have fail something that's been done before isn't a means to the fact that it'll fail. It'll only fail if if repeated, but if you add a gimmick with that gimmick and enhance overall style you'll go some were.
Rift had rifts
SWTOR has Story
The list goes on.
Now luckily upcomming MMOs are attempting this and they look promising.
I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.
I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.
P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)
Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.
Soulbinding. It's such a lazy way to deal with gear economy in a game... Increasing repair costs would be much better. Say each repair costs more and more money, but you can "renew" the item through some other mechanic, like epic quests or rare drops or something. Soulbinding is just so... LAZY.
No NPC run economy. WTF is with that? Given the experience with RTSs and strategies you'd think it would be a breeze to create a Settlers-style NPC run economies. So now when you go crazy and kill a bunch of farmers, your village has a real problem with food vendors.
Unimaginative RPG systems. MMOland is still stuck with D&D straight out of 1978.
Uninteresting AI. Put a few AI variables in there devs! Like "bravery" and "socialbility", "greed" and "IQ" and you'll improve your PvE 10x on the cheap.
Lack of emergent content generators in general. Stories scripted to each painful detail. Devs acting like doting overprotective mothers, control freaks to the man. Jeezus, let go of me already - let the world breathe a little.
Linearity. It's all thinly disguised invisible tunnels with spectacular mounatins somewhere far off... whose only purpose is to reminfd you that you are stuck in a glass tunnel
very nice topic i like it so keep it up
Online Auftr
Being a hero and not being able to climb a tree.
Being a hero and not being able to swim underwater.
Being a hero and not being able to jump over a log or rock.
Cross-promotional virtual items, e.g., Purchasing Red Alert 3 CE will give you a rare hat that will turn you into a bear in Warhammer Online.
"Founders Status" - This is too stupid to even talk about.
Heh , *remembers the hype about SWtor and all the promises* ... *plays SWTOR anticapating some basic features* ... *miserably dissapointed* ... So yeah , I'll let these new called "MMO's" release for a few months and then give it a shot. No point trying out GW2 on release because I know for a fact that half the features will be missing along with a termite infestation (Bugs) , same goes for ArcheAge .
The only 2 games that I am currently waitting upon and cannot wait to get my hands on are PlanetSide 2 and End of Nations. Even if missing half the features and bugged up the rear , just the fact that it's purely PvP makes it all worth while. Feels good to be able to shoot stuff and blow up buildings and such. These 2 titles will rejuvenate the MMO world. We got enough sprites and elves already.
You mean like being a jedi knight and getting send to collect bantha poo or run other errands any droid could do?
