My choice for that would be:
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. Released January 30, 2007, so it turned 5 years 2 days ago.
Whats your choice ?
Please note that World of Warcraft was released November 23, 2004, and is therefore over 7 years old and not a valid candidate.

EQ2 and RIFT tied for me.
But non RPG, Planetside and LoL.
Core i5 13600KF, BeQuiet Pure Loop FX 360, 32gb DDR5-6000 XPG, WD SN850 NVMe ,PNY 3090 XLR8, Asus Prime Z790-A, Lian-Li O11 PCMR case (limited ed 1045/2000), 32" LG Ultragear 4k Monitor, Logitech G560 LightSync Sound, Razer Deathadder V2 and Razer Blackwidow V3 Keyboard
Vanguard for me also.
Age of Conan if it counts, it does 2008, also after 6 months release, not counting the release itself.
Lord of the Rings online. Lets face it, who doesn't like the LoTR ? The game was fun for leveling up, it brought a challenge and you had to work for things in the game you wanted. Anyone who actually read the books or watched the movies got to participate in the events. The graphics were very nice(assuming you had a computer that could handle the game). There were fun events in the game(Yuletide/Harvest Festivals). Instances/raids kept you interested and presented a challange. Many other smaller things like housing, playing music(you can have freakin ingame band ), and skirmishes were a bonus. Lets not forget about the awesome community, so many nice people in this game. I know i'm not listing a lot of the things that make this game great, but there are too many to list right now. This was def the best game overall in the past 5 years.
I don't know. I haven't played a MMO past the free month in over 5 years.
GW count?
Otherwise ATITD or EvE.
Sadly it's StarQuest Online for me. Besides all the tstuff I hate abou tthe game it really is the ultimate sandbox MMO.
"I am not in a server with Gankers...THEY ARE IN A SERVER WITH ME!!!"
You really can't stop mentioning that game can you? lol.
Do you post about the fanbois posting all day about WoW and SWTOR? OOOOOOH sorry I don't like stupid themepark games.
"I am not in a server with Gankers...THEY ARE IN A SERVER WITH ME!!!"
Since I'm from the future I'll have to say GW2 ^_^!
These may not be the most popular choices, but I'd say
1. Aion
2. AoC
3. Rift
..in that order. Given that none of them were great, but IMHO, there have been no great MMOs in the past five years.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
World of Warcraft
PS. I saw that OP categorized it as invalid. I just think the restriction OP has chosen is invalid in itself because he chose MMO that's older than 5 years.
LOTRO ,
although not most original (or original at all). It was only MMO that actually suceeded to win both players and some measure of comerciall sucess.
EQ2 was released the same year as WoW so it wouldnt qualify.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Vanguard..
The Vision was there, the World was there.. The only problem was the support for the game was not
I would have to choose LotRO. It's the game I have played most in the past 5 years. It's an enjoyable game with a good community.
darkfall

LOTRO for me, one of the rare MMOs that actually manage to immerse me with its beatiful environments and great music.
Definitely LotR for me. Bit frustrating considering what has happened with that game as of late and that it would be a game for me that came out that long ago.

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
swtor ,since i fount the autoenvironement setting
Rift if I could just remember my password right now... But over the past five years? WOW up until two years ago.

I would have to go with LOTRO also except I have always hated how the female elves always look like they are pissed off at someone.
As good as LOTRO was though, overall if you take everything in to account it would probably be Rift...
Granted lotro did better with dealing with pvp than many games in a very long time, monster play was fun, and we had some pretty epic wars fighting over capture points.
I can remember huge organized wars with 2 or 3 raids of monster players vs 2 or 3 raids of character players,
Not to mention 50-100 players clashing in battle in one area and only a few people having any lag issues at all.
Actually when I think on it going to swap my vote back to Lotro, based on smoothest launch, a solid complete game at release, a dynamic pvp concept and execution, and amazing in game vistas.
Top 5
1) WoW up through LK
2) Rift
3) DDO
4) Champions Online
5) Guild Wars
I would have to go with Aion. Very imaginative world, good story behind it, fluid fighting, beautiful graphics.
