I will tell you this I have played many mmorpg's and none of them can compare to asherons call. It may lack in the graphics department, but thats nothing what the whole community, quest, trading, and the PvP has to offer. Its not the outside the counts, but the inside. brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.
Yea elnator All the other games you metioned are good for the console gamer. Most console gamers do not like ac because it takes mainly skill. especially the PvP servers they are a turn off to console gamers. Is that broad enough for you? You a console gamer then WOW SWG COH are the games for you .....in my opinion. thank you
I cant leave EQ and Eq2 out they are designed so consolers can play them. I especially want to add Eq2 to that list. I mean really!! You have to do a quest for just about anything you want to see. thats not a way to exploit your world! not to mention the manyu wasted hours spent looking for groups....grrrr. I will say turbine keep up the good work! you guys have outdone yourselves with asherons call. (psssst....design a new engine)
I too think AC1 is one of the best MMORPG's out there, I have tied almost all the big name games since I started playing back when "The Realm" came out in beta. The game play is great, monthly updates and story line, the world its self is huge.
They have the best pvp system going. so what that they don't have the best eye candy out there, eye candy doesn't make a great game look at Lineage II .
Heck look at WOW there are people leaving that game every day because they have already done just about everything they can do already.
The biggest problem with AC1 is they never really put it out there for the public to see, its also one of the lest likely game you can find no farmers on as Turbine has it fingers in there to stop that.
Its all up to the individual on how they like their game play, if you want a kill kill game that are mostly made up of teenagers then WOW would be the game for you , but if you want a game that has mostly mature people who care about there toons and game play and building a long lasting guild the AC1 is that game.
Turbine is bringing AC1 into the future with its graphic updates, next month it gets another boast of its graphic engine and they said they are working on more. So unless you play that game for more than a day or too you have no idea what AC1 is all about.
Yes I have played EQ for more that 6 months and yes I have tied and beta tested SWG and beta tested at least 7 other games and nothing compares to AC1 in game play and live dev events.
I am looking at other games to play all the time but as yet nothing can take its place. I thought Mythica might but it went by the way side and Dragon Empires looked good to but it went too, also Wish looked pretty good.
I'm now looking at Dark Sol slice and Hero's Journey, Lord of the Rings On line and D&D on-line, maybe one of those might tear me away from AC1 lol
Argue not with Dragons, for tho art crunchy and go well with brie

Agood game will always be a good game.there is no was about it unless the game was altered like with UO among others
It hasn't got all the newest graphics, and it has no storyline that makes anysense
it is a monster squat only
I played untill I was a lev 96 mage and woke up one day and said to myself why?
at lev 96 your a god your buffs are so high that monsters are like little bugs to you
that you can crunch at will
there is no challenges left once you did the island quest and the queen quest its over
land mass too empty and portals that make you run all over the place defeating the purpos of the portals albeit the 2 subways were handy
it was fun up to level 50-60
the graphics are blocky and blurry by todays standards
although it is still a worthy game if the population is still high
lol Ceara I take it it's been a while since you played then.
I have played since beta and I'm now lvl 156 and I'm a mage and let me tell you, that there are monsters in game that can kill me in one or two hits and thats with melee d and fully buffed with lvl 7 buffs and extra spells on top of that. The top lvl is now 275 not 126
As for the story line if you ever read what was printed then you might have understood what was going on in game.
If you read at all ,what I wrote then you would have seen that they are doing graphic up dates on there engine, I don't think they will ever be the greatest but they will be up there with some of the game out there now.
Eye candy don't make a game, I have played a lot of the new games and the graphics are awesome but the games have no content to keep you busy past the top lvl, most are group orientated and not solo friendly, with different people playing at different time zones its very hard to get anywhere with out group help.
So unless you have played AC1 in the last month the you should really come check it out again. After all any players that haven't migrated from MS to Turbine and try ToD you get 60 free days lol
Argue not with Dragons, for tho art crunchy and go well with brie
One thing the game has is a buttload of content and a lot of history. There is always something you can do. If you are a powergamer and did nothing but get yourself powerleveled to 160 then you missed most of what the game is about. Powerlevelers miss alot of content that they could have enjoyed. The PVP can be alot of fun and if you feel you have gotten uber you should try it (you'll be a little surprised to find you are not as uber as you think).
When you get bored, star an new character, you will find things that you never knew existed. The game is still very good, can it be better yes, but is it still one of the best, I really have to say it is, its just too bad it doesn't have the population it did before. I remember hanging around Ayan and getting portal stormed into the middle of a swamp because the population was too high in town.
I didn't read through all of this thread, just skimmed here and there.
I played AC for about 2.5 years, back in late '00 till early '03...
It was awesome. Best MMORPG ever....emphasis on the 'was.' Im going to have to agree with the originaly post, AC has gone downhill...Here's Just some of the things:
1) Decal - This started the downward spiral of Asheron's Call.
2) UCM - Turbine doing nothing about macroing for the first 5 years of the game hurt it immensly. Now, in there futile efforts to control it, there is no stopping it.
3) Tinkering - One of the worst ideas ever. This rendered every Quest item in the game useless, other than a quest item looking cool. Why go do a quest to get an item anymore, when you could pick some random item off a MOB and put crap on it to make it 400x better than anything you could get from a quest?
4) Housing - Although I was extremely excited about having my own place in AC, it turned out to be an extremely bad idea. From then on, it made every town empty, making it feel like AC was a single player game.
5) Emphasis on Magic - Why?? Turbine changed the game into where if you didn't level retardedly slow, you had to kill things you should really not be able to kill, which means that everyone had to train magics. A tank swordsman should not even fathom picking up life or item magic skills. I know that it's a skill based game, and I think skill based games are infinitely better than class based games, but a tank melee character should not have to be part mage to survive.
I came back for a few days to play the ToD beta, and nothing changed. Everything was still corrupt, and it seemed like it was a lot worse off then when I left.
R.I.P. AC, I loved the complexity of the game, and loved how it was skill based, not class based.

and cheap to play to
the pvp is dumb
the craft system badly done
it wasn't conceived by rpg players thats for sure

Yes, but there is Less socializing and fewer people in-game because of bots - Which is why i said they ruined the game.
Hey look I worked my way through an hour long quest and got this kick ass sword - Oh wait - your not really at your computer to see it.

Extremely well explained Mythik. In fact, I dont have to argue any longer
The old AC is gone.
