Aion vs. Rift.

mastersomratmastersomrat Member UncommonPosts: 373

Hello all,

I am trying to decide which one to play and one of the deciding factors is going to be which one has more subs (doesn't seem like I should play a MMO if their aren't any players).  XFire shows Aion as having twice the subs but MMORPG doesn't even show Aion as the top ten.  Any ideas which of these two are the better and which has more players?  Thanks for help.

rift is a better game pvp wise ,aion might be more popular in asia tho not sure!

Aion is hyperpopular in Asia with about 4.5 million subs. Only in Europe it does not want to run too good. Thats why its going to be f2p in a few weeks in the EU.

I played both Rift and Aion. Each has its charms but  I prefer Aion above Rift.

Btw. Rift is going to be f2p (first 20 levels) too soon.

Played: Guild Wars, AoC, Lotro, CoH, Warhammer, Tabula Ras, Spellborn, Second Life, Rift, Aion, Tera.
    Playing: Guild Wars 2, WoT

What significance does the total number of subs have on your playing experience?  As long as your server is populated, the game could have 10,000 subs (all on your one server) or 10 million subs divided among hundreds of servers, and you will encounter the same population density in game.

Bottom line: you will find both games have servers with solid populations.  Choose the game that has features that appeal most to you.

yeah  i dont understand the games are tottally diffrent its like comparing amular to skyrim ones an open world sandbox the others and actual good action rpg. if your looking for pop for fast ques or group content go with rift. if your looking for a grindfest while leveling up go with aoin.

Both games are good and both are doing very good in comparison to anything but WoW. It depends what you are looking for but you will find players in both games. I found more enjoyment in Aion personally. Leveling is pretty bad in both games, a bit worse in Aion.

Well aion is going f2p very soon and will probally have a massive cash shop to support it.. Rifts will probally go that way soon as well..

I depends a lot upon you -- they are both solid games...

Do you like to hit a monster with a spell back up a bit hit them with another back up a bit hit them with a third then kill them with one melee range spell when they reach you?  If so you want Aion.

Do you hate being ganked in some zones?  Point Rift.

Do you like to craft?  Point Aion.

Is flight something you like?  Point Aion.

Rift is more groupish than Aion is.

Aion takes longer to level in.

Aion has a more pvp endgame and Rift is more a pve endgame.

Monsters require more respect but give you more respect in Aion...

If you like to collect shineys then point Rift.

If you like to collect crafting compenents then point Aion.

    ----

After you quit one game or the other -- at least in my opinion -- the one you would be more likely to give a second chance 12 months later would be Aion.  Rift is the deeper addiction but only for the first part of the game.  You wont see people pine for Rifts endgame generally.

Aion was pretty cool. Rift has its merits too.  Overall, I think Aion wins out in entertaining me.

I found Aion, as a whole, more fun.

It has it's own flaws but I was just bored to tears by Rift :/

  • FrostWyrmFrostWyrm Member Posts: 1,036

I actually tried the free trial of both of these games at the same time last November.

I ended up dropping Aion and subbing a month to Rift.

Only one month, though. I couldn't find a soul combo I really enjoyed, and crafting was completely useless. Mashing the same button over and over with the one-button-does-everything-or-else-you're-gimp macros made the game boring. Rifts were cool at first but lost their appeal after the n'th random rift that could be solo'd effortlessly to the final stage where suddenly even a small group would get raped.

    lol wtf?!?!?

RIFT IS THE WORST PVP IN ANY MMO I HAVE EVER PLAYED - EVER

even worse than supposedly 100% PVE games like LOTRO and COX

better PvP wise? Okay that may mean that Aion's PvP is really bad but Rift is primarily a PvE game, the PvP is an afterthought and mostly warfronts.

  • FrostWyrmFrostWyrm Member Posts: 1,036

I liked PvP in Rift about as much as I liked PvP in WoW (it was mildly entertaining)...largely because they're pretty much the exact same thing.

Never PvP'd in Aion, so I can't say.

  • centkincentkin Member RarePosts: 1,527

If you go aion just do NOT make a templar...  Aion is a fun game for mages.  Warrior types level SLOW.

And yes you are more likely to play for a month or two and leave in Rift than you are in Aion.  Two months in Rift and you have been level capped for a couple of  weeks and are wondering if you want to keep doing dailies and dungeon groups for artificial stats to continue on the progression.  Two months in Aion and you aren't even close to the level cap.

I felt Rift was more fun in the short term, but Aion is better in the long run, especially if you're into the PvP.  I'd say both have enough players, but neither is really thriving anymore.  Aion did hold onto that thriving feel a lot longer than Rift did, but not sure that really matters at this point.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Aion's a girl and Rift is a guy.

    - You will find alot of ppl to play with in both games, so here theres a tie.

    - Wich 2 are better? AION by far but thats my opinion.

The best you can do is do the trials, no cost involve, just do it.

You are from US, so no AION f2p for you atm.

I prefer Rift personally. I liked a lot of the content and enjoyed it quite a bit. I was excited for Aion but when it launched I never got into it. Id say both are good and are quite healthy.

I played Aion first, and certainly played it longer, but found Rift a refreshing change--for about 6 months.  Then, they were all seeming the same to me and I, thankfully, found Skyrim.  Now I'm playing SWTOR and looking forward to GW2.  (I played GW1 after Rift to get into the HOM for GW2).

The graphics in Aion are unparralled.

The graphics in Aion are a matter of taste.  I personally think they are horrible.  Like the music though. but on the other hand...hate the sound effects.  Ah well.

I would agree that Rift feels better in it's newbie levels then Aion.

It get older way faster though, in my experience.

    Weird really.

The design style is taste, the technical excellence of the models etc isn't. They are still waaay better then newer games like SWTOR. It's the models where this game shines really, though ofc if you don't enjoy the visual style that won't matter much to you.

The environments aren't that great from a technical standpoint, they are pretty rough and ready most of the time... Stylewise though I still enjoy them. There is a lot of imagination gone into the building of Aion's world.

I love the music as well, but lol yeah, I get where your coming from about the FX.

I really liked Aion, however the PvP system was lacking. While I had some amazing battles early on in the game it ended up being the traditional Zerg beat downs that dont interest me. Around november school started demanding more time from me and I fell out of friendship with half the memebrs of my guild (I kind of realized I didn't enjoy some of them as much, and others were too and it just got toxic.) So I left and never had a draw to come back.

Never played Rift, but I knew it wasn't for me. Rift excels at what I most dislike in MMOs. I am glad some people enjoy it however.

So Aion wins in my book.

Aion falls into the failed opportunities for me. Much like WAR, only not as bad. I enjoyed Aion greatly. I really wanted to enjoy WAR past level 20, but it just wasn't right.

Sent me an email if you want me to mail you some pizza rolls.
