Hard to choose cause both of my candidates ultimatelly fail ,but well.
1. Vanguard - for great design and trying to do some innovative things, feeling of the world - BUT it failed due to hideous launch and very bad after launch support and treatment
2. Lotro - WAS great game. Simple yet with good 'climate' and good community. Underwent massive changes in last year and it is nothing more than medicore atm. also for me business model changed for worse.
edit:
I have NOT considered games that were released more than 5 years ago. List would be difffrent If I would.
To me this is kinda like a 'Pick the Shiniest Turd' contest. Every MMO I've tried that has released in the last 5 years has been total crap... in my honest opinion of course.
I don't know. I haven't played a MMO past the free month in over 5 years.
I know how you feel. Since I retired from Eve, every other game I've tried barely held my interest past the first day. They all seem to blend together from Aion to LoTRO to Rift.

Vanguard for me. For the reasons of having lasting appeal(you don't hit cap so quickly), large worlds to explore, the really unique classes, races with uniques bonuses/powers, Diplomacy and Crafting alternatives to Adventuring, and the best community to play with. All the other problems with the game could be ignored.
Of all the others that stay close to the modern MMORPG model it would be SWTOR. Again, this has problems too but I'm still able to enjoy it.
I'm going with FFXIV as it is the only MMO I have bought in over 5 years. Yeah I could have bought more but I don't jump onto hype bandwagon and I honestly did not like what I seen in any of the MMO's released in the past 5 years.
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. Released January 30, 2007, so it turned 5 years 2 days ago.
Whats your choice ?
Please note that World of Warcraft was released November 23, 2004, and is therefore over 7 years old and not a valid candidate.
I will go with Vanguard as well.I think people forget how old Vanguard is,i mean if you played it 5 years ago theat's along time ago and the mmo is still going.
I'd like to know what the original poster means by best of the past 5 years, when he starts by saying Vanguard, even though it launched more than 5 years ago, but says WoW doesn't qualify, because it also launched more than 5 years ago.
WoW doesn't qualify because it sucks. Every single MMOG on the market right now is complete garbage. Every. Single. One.
Lets go play UO together!
I vote SWTOR because its the most fun I've had playing any online game of any kind in years, well other than WoW which is apparently disqualified...
I liked Aion a lot but it was too PVP centric and I didn't like the crafting so much and the end game was less appealing than others... Also I didn't like the Abyss.
I never really gave AoC much of a chance, none of my friends wanted to play it, though I won a copy from here, got to level 32, loved it a lot up to that point... otherwise it might beat out SWTOR in my heart.
I'll probably get flamed for this but I have to go with Xsyon.

imho, there was no good MMO since then, including WoW and EQ2, the foundators of the modern theme-park roughly based on the classic EQ-model. all modern MMOs are just too linear and more in order to be called good.
also in the sandbox-department there was no good game. they have been either very unpolished and lacking functions or they focused too much on pvp-everwhere, which prevents success.
due to the fact, that there was no good MMO in the last 9 years, the question about "the best" is obsolete.

All of my current gaming friends I made through that game in beta. That game was 100% community. Then there was a flood of new players, and between the server problems and that it really destroyed the game.

we are talking about the best not the worst ....
Its Age of Conan.
I never got to really experience the game, but I did enjoy the graphics and animations.
I would have to say Darkfall nothing comes close to the amonut of fun I ahve had playing Darkfall..
Yes it has issues and yes the company behind it are morons but when the servers had enough people playing it was awesome fun..
lotro.. had the best community and the most "RPG" feel do it.

I can only go for 2 games........AoC and Aion. These 2 gave me most fun while playing. And fun is the most important thing that counts.
Played: Guild Wars, AoC, Lotro, CoH, Warhammer, Tabula Ras, Spellborn, Second Life, Rift, Aion, Tera.
Playing: Guild Wars 2, WoT
Mortal Online is the game I've had the most fun with that's come out in the last 5 years.
If we're just talking mainstream, I'd say LOTRO.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
None of the above, hasn't been a decent MMORPG made in the last 5 years. Probably why I'm currently playing Lineage 2, back to the classics.

I can't believe some of the music in that game. It gives me the goosebumps sometimes.

Vanguard was out in Jan 07 so it is right on the 5 year mark. Happy anniversary!
