That's the point, for a game to lose 40% of their plaeyr base withint the first month of the games release is not a good sign. As you said, if it maintains that drop rate over the next 2 or three months this game will be lucky to retain 20% of their player base. 20% of 2mill is like 400k players. For a big AAA game like this with as much hype as it has had 400k does not bode well. Is it still successful. To some of us it will seem successful...hell any MMO that retains 400k subs should be considered successful to some degree - but it certainly isn't going to shattering any MMO sub numbers any time soon in the future.
Wait just a damn minute Teala. Your math is very very wrong.
You yourself said that they sold (including digital) 2.1 million. I dont know if that number is right on, but it's the number you gave.
They currently have retained 1.7 million people.
Then you go on to say that they lost 40% of their player base!!!! Grab a calculator lets go through this together!!!!
1.7 million / 2.1 million = .8
That, my friend, is 80% retention rate. So by the numbers you provided, SWTOR has only lost about 20% of it's player base.
How does that work?
I highlighted something you seem to have missed...I am saying they do not have 1.7 million subs. They are basing that on a number from just after the first free month. Since then they have lost more.
Except you are wrong.
The 1.7 million number was accurate up to the conference call. Which was yesterday.
And includes people who are in their free months, which mean that some of them will not be stay subbed so the number will most likely go down unless a surge of people join the game, which I doubt since the sale of the game has plummeted in the last few weeks.
err wont that always be the case, that some people will be in their free month? Unless they stop selling the game.

I believe that they have only sold about 200-300k copies in January. This would mean that only about 1.4 million of those people are actually paying a sub.
So if the retention rate is around 50% (it's actually higher than that) then they should end up around 1.5 - 1.6 million people after those people's free month is done, not counting future box sales.

How many subs do you think they lost since yesterday? You're reaching quite a bit here, with no real verifiable numbers.
So is that success or a failure for Star Wars the Old Republic?
They only needed 500k to be profitable, so I'd consider 1.7 to be a massive success.
Haters will state otherwise and try to spin this into a negative, but it's far from anything resembling a negative when you actually take the time to look at the big picture and all of the facts involved with it.

You dont know that the 1.7 million number is for yesterday, it could be a week ago or whenever they gathered those numbers so it is you who are reaching.
All I am saying is that number was from the past and since then more people have finished their free month and not renewed so by now that number would have gone down, unless you are saying that they have sold more copies than people not renewing their subs which I doubt because some numbers showing digital sales showed less than 50k copies sold 5th week after launch.
“We are not entirely convinced,” wrote Todd Mitchell of Brean Murray on Thursday. Mitchell had cut his price target on EA last month, citing worries about the performance of “Star Wars.” He said the company’s disclosure that it plans to increase marketing to support the title in the March quarter “is tacit acknowledgment of an uncertain outlook.”

Geez, you must not have been following this thread.
Quote from the conference call transcript:
" if you'd extrapolate off of where we are today with 1.7 million active subscribers"
He said they have that many today.
Edit: I'll just leave this here...from the presentation:
We currently have a little over 1.7 million active subscribers. The rest have either not started playing yet or have opted out. This is an outstanding start for an MMO, and the metrics on engagement suggests players are loving the game. Unique log-ins are averaging about 1 million per day, and their average playtime is approximately 4 hours per day.
Come talk to me in 3 months when people are screaming for merger servers - I'll stand by what I have wrote. In 6 to 8 months this game will be merging servers.
Merging servers in SWTOR will be a nightmare. Not only do they have to deal with first name conflicts they have legacy issues. If I was forced to change my legacy because I was moved to a server where someone already used it, I'd be right pissed.
WOW avoids merges by having cross server group finding. That eliminates most issues other than competitive raiding. Since those people are a minority they would likely be on a popular server already and if they weren't they would pay the $25 to move.
I predict cross server group finding before server merges.
Unfortunately, I think you're probably right. Which is lame because there really are some that do need to be merged. Don't see it happening any time soon though due to the PR hit it would ensue and how they may fear it would effect future sales.
Hopefully they offer free transfers soon though. An lfd feature would help with fps but doesn;t do much for the other heroics in the game which there are more than a few of. Which is nice that there is a decent amount of group content but that doesn't do players much good if they aren't able to complete a lot of them because of a lack of players.
Hopefully their revised lfg mechanics at least come out soon to help alleviate some of this.

im dumbfounded. I cant belive people can actually spin 1.7 million subscribers, and over 1 mill concurrent as bad. For tor its a success its more then they expected at this point.
Oh and most of the people who have bought the game have gone past the free trial, over 1.5 million who bought the game started with early access and shortly after.
Yet im hearing talk of server merges, when in the article on massively at least they talk about how they were able to up the server limits after doing some work on them.
Which explains why what once were full servers now say heavy and once were heavy say standard. Sorry but 1.7 million is a good get. after 42 days of service.
I dont know if this number will go up or down but after a month they are dong pretty well. and they have kept more then half there subs base from the numbers i saw.

I dont follow this logic (can we really call it that??)
We dont know if ppls quit (they prolly did) neither do we know how many more ppls did start the game so how is what Teala said proven to be true in your eyes if we have no way of knowing how many ppls quit and how many ppls started the game?
I would agree that its likley that not all of the 1.7 mil will stay and also would be willing to agree that they didnt have a huge boost of new players this week but we cant know nothing is right or wrong its all just guessing.
Some of you are guessing predicting and doomsdaying this game since release and so far well you were wrong they sold a shitload of games for the short time its out and have a way higher playerbase left after the first month than you all predicted so by now its actually a save bet to just assume that whatever you guys guess is wrong blinded by hatred and nothing more than hot air.

The other thing all you negative nancys are forgetting is that SWTOR is still around $50. When they discount it t o $40 in a month or 2 there will be another large wave, and when they discount it more there will be more waves.
Rift, for example, was on sale 2 months after release I believe, and a few months after release you could get it for $5.
Right now SWTOR has 1.7 million subs from the primary adopters of the game, and if you don't think that there are people waiting for it to go on sale to try it out you are fooling yourselves.
Selling the game for peanuts has kept Rift alive for a very long time. SWTOR probably has a few months to go before it hits the point where they need to sell the game for cheap, and when that happens prepare for another resurgance.
Yet im hearing talk of server merges, when in the article on massively at least they talk about how they were able to up the server limits after doing some work on them.
Yes...clearly the people asking for server merges are asking for it because when they go to log in their server population status changed.
I mean it doesn't have anything to do with what they're actually experiencing in game whilst attempting to play it. That would just be silly.
>_>

1,700,000+ active subscribers – 1 million concurrent
Average session time was four hours during the first month and a half
99.5% Server Uptime
1 million doesn't sound right, especially with 4.5 hours avg session time; avg. session time would have to be 13-14 hours to match concurrent. Not sure what that number is about.
If you read the rest of the article, they state that at this point, most of those 1.7 million subs are "paying subs". That is, they're past their free month and have paid their first sub fee.
Either way, the haters are choking on their sour grapes, right now. The WAR-esque predictions haven't come true, and likely won't. That doesn't guarantee success indefinitely(nothing does), but any talk of "titanic" failure is even more absurd now than it was closer to launch.
Really? War sold 1.2 million copies and had 800.000 subs after the first month so in that regard SW:TOR is so far similar to WAR.
Except for one difference, SWTOR has more subs right now than WAR ever did.
Well naturally, this is Star Wars we are talking about, it is way bigger IP than Warhammer, and it was released during the christmas holidays, which further boost sales. So the numbers are not exactly the same but similar. For sure this is no WoW killer we are talking about because WoW gained subs, month after month, where as SW:TOR is already starting to lose subs.
As Teala said, down around 400k subs from 2.1 million just after a month. I guess the loss will be even greater after the second month when more people have played through the storylines and realised there is not much after.
I don't care about the whole "WoW Killer" thing. Never have. I really don't think most people who are playing do either. Some people will throw that term around, but I don't give a crap about wow.
Second, the only thing this shows is that SWTOR had a VERY successful launch and first month, with pretty decent retention. It doesn't indicate what's going to happen next month. It doesn't mean 400k people are going to quit next month or that the game will grow.
You guys can deny it all you want, but in the first month and a half, this game is very successful from where I'm standing. Their first month retention is very high, by your own admission.
I'm not saying that the game is going to do better or worse next month. All I'm saying is that this first month was very successful.
No doubt, it was extremely successful in it's first month. The trick now is to keep being as successful. I am not seeing it. But hey, maybe Bioware will do something awesome and the game will eventually start growing, as it is now, it isn't growing, it is losing subs at a substantial rate.
And you know this how exactly? Of course it's not the first time you write BS out of thin air in these boards without anything to back up your claims.
1.7 million subs 6 weeks after release.. yeah, it is losing subs at a substantial rate indeed
Come talk to me in 3 months when people are screaming for merger servers - I'll stand by what I have wrote. In 6 to 8 months this game will be merging servers.
I'm still waiting for you to elaborate on the "..it's losing subs on a substantial rate.." thingy. Give us the figures or the facts. Btw, weren't you one of them doomsayers claiming that the game will have ~300k after the first month? I'm to lazy to search your posts but i'm sure you're one of them.

See you in 6 months.
I never said the game would have x number of subs after its first month. Never have said anything remotely like that.
I dont know if they are putting a spin on the sub #s or not. But regardless it is a success as of today no doubt about it.
Might not be as big of a success as they anticipated I think. Either way if BW only kept 40% of the subs they have now then this game will be considered a success and will stay around for awhile.
I dont even like the game lol. I just dont understand the predictions for failure. Maybe some peoples definition of success is different from mine.
And for the people who are fans of the game and want it to succeed this is good news indeed. I will not be playing but for those of you that will be I am glad its doing well. Just not my personal cup of tea I suppose.
WAR was released 2008 Septembre 18 and within 12 days it had sold 1.2 million copies and over 800k subscribers, now 3.5 years later it has an estimated of less than 50k subscribers and t w o servers left. source wikipedia
Initial sales does NOT mean it will be a success in the long therm. It just mean that the game was hyped to the skies.
This doesn't make sense if you're using subs in the same context as TOR. It's clear BW said that the 1.7 includes people in their free month although the majority are paying, they said that directly.
If you're saying after 12 days WAR had 1.2 million sold and 800k subs then they're not using the same metric since it had been less than a month so all 1.2m would still be active subs. If 400k people unsubbed after 12 days then that was a horrific sign and not what we're seeing with TOR at all.
Actualy, the exact words that Gibeau used were "I can't tell you that the majority of the 1.7 million are paying subscribers for us currently, which is great considering"
Where did you get that quote? HERE is the quote from Darth Hater:
Q: Are these 1.7 subscribers paying?
A: Active subscribers means anyone paying or in their trial period. Most of those 1.7m are paying at this point.
Read what you quoted. It doesn't make any sense. Why would he say it's great that he CAN'T tell you that the majority are paying subscribers?
Yes, let me -- maybe what I can do is I'll define active subscribers for you, and then give you a little color on that. We're not going to be able to talk too deeply on conversion just because it's so early in the life of the product. We're only 10 days past our first month anniversary. But essentially, we're using the industry standard for active subscribers. If anyone paying a subscription or playing on an active prepaid timecard, and those who have registered to play are still in the trial subscription period. I can't tell you that the majority of the 1.7 million are paying subscribers for us currently, which is great considering we're only, like I said, 42 days into the launch, and you have a 30-day trial period. So a lot of people are voting that they want to be a part of the service and are engaged, which is great news.
For those wondering where people get teh 1.7 current subs its darth hater. The interview they ahve up states that while a few of the 1.7 are in trila the majority of those players are paying customers.
So spin it however u want as of whatever date it ended at that time they have almost 1.7 million payng customers thats a much higher retnetion then those that predicted free 2 play in a month thought possible or the 30 pct retention people were predicting.
i was one who thought theyd have 4 millin by now so it didnt come close to my expectations in sales or subs but its doing ok at this point.
And is no where near server merges or free 2 play.
1,700,000 is an impressive number, but why is there about a 300,000 people difference in copies sold and active subscribers? Is this common for MMOs around the time of launch?
Comments

Geez, you must not have been following this thread.
Quote from the conference call transcript:
" if you'd extrapolate off of where we are today with 1.7 million active subscribers"
He said they have that many today.
Edit: I'll just leave this here...from the presentation:
We currently have a little over 1.7 million active subscribers. The rest have either not started playing yet or have opted out. This is an outstanding start for an MMO, and the metrics on engagement suggests players are loving the game. Unique log-ins are averaging about 1 million per day, and their average playtime is approximately 4 hours per day.

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
im dumbfounded.
I am looking at the transcript at http://files.shareholder.com/downloads/ERTS/1654951623x6591240x538997/0bdba9f2-8364-4394-9a21-563bd460d841/EA_Q3FY12_Earnings_Release_2_1_12_12.15PM.pdf and I cant see it in there. What is your source?

It trully is, everyone's having an absolute ball
In fact I would say this is the best MMO forum drama since the great Incarna debacle over at CCP last year.
It's definitely "Team Nay" versus "Team Yay!"
Yes...clearly the people asking for server merges are asking for it because when they go to log in their server population status changed.
I mean it doesn't have anything to do with what they're actually experiencing in game whilst attempting to play it. That would just be silly.

Poor , poor, north Americans. Is the sun not out today...boo hooo......

Yep... looks like a type to me.
Thats a press release.
I'm looking at a transcript of the Earnings Call.

That is the Q&A part, the presentation is also there on a tab at the top. The part I quoted is near the beginning.
