Where are all the good Sci-Fi MMOrpgs?

Anarcy Online is about the best Sci Fi genre game I've played, but I just can't seem to get back into that one.  So what else is there?  I'm kinda tired of the whole swords and sorcerers style games.  Fantasy is cool an all, but after the 500 fantasy mmorpgs out there, I need something new.  Not just a new way of doing something old.

Someone make an awesome Sci Fi mmorpg worth playing already!

What would everyone think of a Shadow Run Online (remember the old pen and paper game?).

How about a Cyber Punk Online (Anarchy Online is close, but no cigar, same with Neocron).

If I loose a limb, I want to be able to replace it with cybernetics, if I approach a computer terminal, I want to be able to digitize my mind and battle black ice and tracker programs before they fry my cortex.  I want to be able to spray lead at 30 rounds per second and write my name in the side of a building.  Give me a hover bike mounted with rocket launchers!

STEP AWAY FROM THAT SWORD WIELDING DWEEB!  Get outfitted with some cybernetics, strap on a .50 cal sniper rifle and lets go on a night hunt.  Switch on your IR eye implant, link your tracking computer with your rifle and pop that magic wielding nerd from 3/4 a mile out.  Don't go bringin a pig sticker to a gun fight!!

Well, i can recommend EvE online, i just recently reactivated my old account and im having a blast playing it.

if you interested in knowing more about the game go here:

    eve

The game works on a single server, during peak times the number of players playing at the same time is more than 10.000, peaking at more than 12.000.

During the day theres always more than 6000 players at the same time, the politics in the game are a big factor, with alliances or corporations going to war with eachother for control of different systems, masive fleet battles, many different types of ships, including interceptors, cloaking devices, battleships and many more.

The game is completly player driven, players can set up missions for other players, the market is player controled, you can be a miner, pirate, trader, bounty hunter, mercenary and anything you like, there are no classes and the only limit is your imagination on what you can do.

All ur Mountain Dew is belong to me.

Yeah, I have an eve online account.  My wonderful character is sitting in the hanger training up skills (and has been for the past month) so maybe I can stand a chance vs. player pirates that have been in game for a longer time then I have.  I got kinda sick of loosing everything I owned in a 0.4 system where I had a mission to run because some bored group was camping a gate.

    Tell me about it ::::39::

I decided to start a new character and gear him toards production, a tactic i used to employ was to scavange low sec sectors (0.0) for abandoned containers from people that were killing npc ships, most players only bother to loot the battleship cans, so the rest is usualy just sitting there waitaing for someone to grab them. I use a cheap frigate and try to make some good isk that way. Of course many times other players take an
exeception to players scouting their corp controled sectors and blow me up, afterwards proceding to kill my pod.

But its worth the risk and i have made more than 8 million isk after 4 days playing.

All ur Mountain Dew is belong to me.

Eve and Planetside. Everything else right now basically sucks.

Eve online.  I've played on and off for just over a year.  If your just mining and leveling your skills for starters, you haven't scratched the surface.  Don't dispair.  Eve is a fantastic game that you will find addicting in the long term.

I am trying to find some decent game with lasers instead of swords. I agree it's a hard task.

Yes. What you really need are friends to help, more than skills. One player against a pirate camp of 4-7 battleships is going to get killed most of the time regardless of trained skills unless you have instajump bookmarks.

The new cold war map and ship routings have really reinvigorated piracy in low sec empire space (which was to a large degree dead during the era of the highways). The corp I belong to has been going through these systems every few days and sweeping out the pirates, breaking the gate camps pretty effectively, because while these folks are good at ganking people at a gate at 7 to 1 odds, they're not nearly as good at reacting to a well-coordinated PvP attack. What you need to deal with the mega camping pirates is a good group, good leadership and some decent combat experience, which all comes with joining a good corp. As a result I'd recommend trying to find a good corp to play with -- it's really a key to long term enjoyment in EVE, in my opinion.

EVE and SWG are decent Sci-Fi MMORPG's though neither really appeal to EVERYONE they're both good games. PlanetSide isn't really an RPG it's more of an MMOFPS but, it too, is sci-fi and fairly good.

Other than that? Isn't a decent title out.

I'd say if you want a truely polished game EVE is probably the first one you should try, and it also has a free trial.

Personally I prefer SWG but it'll cost you $30 to try it out so try EVE first, then try SWG. PlanetSide isn't a game that will generally be someone's "only" MMO

Give Jumpgate a go. http://www.jossh.com for pilot signups.

Rather than pointing and clicking to move your ship you'll have to fly it yourself and learn the skills to battle/trade/mine/fight the Conflux enemy/pvp for real.

Its a hands on skill based mmorpg where the fate and success of your character is entirely in your hands.

3 playable factions - each with their own array of unique ships. 2 Galaxies. Aliens Conflux with ranging difficulties. Conflux Swarms, intersteller storms and so much more.

Form squads, join squads, build your own station, trade, mine, haul, pvp, search for long lost advanced artifacts or become a flux hunter battling any of the 28 Alien AI types in the home galaxy or in the aliens own space.

Recently the EU server and the US server combined to form the World Wide Server so theres plenty of other characters to help develope your skills.

And if you want a real challenge - try and kill more flux than me. image

vorlon31, squad leader for Flux Clearance

The ONLY pilot in existance to hold the Unity Stripe VI medal for enemy kills.

    Jumpgate!

Jumpgate is a decent game but flight in that game always felt sluggish to me and the graphics are fairly dated, though still ok.

IMO SWG's space combat (which is also twitch) is much faster paced and more involving and the NPC's ships don't look like flying neon-pink seafood.

Don't get me wrong... JumpGate is ok... but it's not worth $9.95 a month imo. Not even sure if it really qualifies as an MMO anymore either since it has a whopping 100 people on at peak time now. We get more people than that on the Freelancer server I play on from time to time (which supports up to 256 lag free as long as they don't all go to the same sector at once ;)).

Agreed on the graphics - but there will always be a play off between exciting gameplay and graphics.

    But sluggish?? Nahh.

As for fast paced combat with npc's I guess you last looked at jumpgate berfore the Conflux evolved beyond c12's. Give a few c19-24 a go and then say the gameplays slow paced. :D

Me, Im a JG addict and its the only game I play having dabbled with all the rest.

There aren't any. Game developers don't want to take the risk to develop space MMOs after they saw what happened to EnB. It is quite unfortunate, but thats the truth. Even titles like Imperator were "delayed" (read: most likely canceled). The industry is really letting us down.

  • RykerRyker Member UncommonPosts: 207

Im tired of all the fantasy hack and slash same old same old also. I wish the would come out with a bunch of sci fi games. Auto assault looks like it may be ok, Im going to try that one. Pirates of the Burning sea and Star Trek online is also coming.

It doesn't even need to be a "space" game.

I don't know if you are familiar with pen and paper games.  Back in the day I played games like GURPS Sci-Fi, Cyberpunk, and Shadow Run.  All of which are sci fi based, and none are really up in space.  Course you could with GURPS, but wasn't based on that.

I don't need to be in a space ship, but I do want modern/futuristic weapons.  I want to hack a computer terminal and steal info or plant false evidance.  I want to be able to fight enemies in both the real world (as it is in the game that is) and in a virtual world where my life is just as much equaly at stake.  I want vehicles with weapons mounted on them.  I want body armor, exo-skeletons and high powered explosives.

    :)

Personally I like the combat in SWG better. JG was fun... and I loved it and played it regularly till SWG:JTL came out :) But JTL blows it away.

To be totally honest, I did the SWG thing for about 2 months, made a MTK/MD and was bored out of my skull shortly after.  Personally (my opinion only) SWG sucks.

Checking that out now.  I'm at work so I'll check it out when I get home tonight.  Looks interesting.

And thanks for the heads out.  Don't think I've heard of this one yet.

as far as Sci-Fi the only 2 worth mentioning are EVE and Anarchy Online, but after playing both for some time i don't really like either.

However, there are a couple of games on the horizon worth keeping an eye out for:

    Tabula Rasa

    Twilight War

I'll tell you this right now. Many would label this game 'hardcore'. The learning curve is very steep and there is unrestricted PvP. Almost all aspects of the game are also player-run, such as the economy and politics. Just giving you a heads up before you dive in the game with predetermined expectations.

Is the player base primarily European, or is there a fair number of US/Canadian players?  Thats one of the things that kinda turns me off on Eve.  The majority player base is European, not that that in itself is bad, but the time zone difference makes it difficult to do group things.
  • ConnoisseurConnoisseur Member Posts: 273

There are more North American players than European, but the server cluster is located in Europe.

  • LuicferLuicfer Member Posts: 15

Cool, it's my Friday, so I'll have plenty of time to check it out and see if I like it or not.  Thanks again for the 411.

Starwars is ok,you could maybe try matrix in worst case.

Fallen earth should be a good product,if it can make it,it will be a post-nuclear type.
