My only knock on the game, is it really doesnt feel like Star Trek.
It probably never will either, so long as it is a Cryptic game. It is fairly evident Cryptic has no regard for the source material. Were you around for the green Ferengi Yoda handing out the Lightsaber Bat'leths during the Winter Event?
I really wonder, this game has all the features of SWTOR, the only exception being the Bioware dialogue-wheel in cutscenes and conversation-system. Pretty much everything else is equal or better (full space combat).
Companions: check (up to 4 in missions)
Companion customization: check
Crew skills: check
Crew missions: check
Cutscenes: check
story missions: check
VO: check (even some big names there, like Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy)
"on the move" combat: check (even has an over-the-shoulder shooter mode)
your own ship where you can place trophies and walk around in: check
space combat: check (even better than TOR because its not on rails)
customizable skills for ground and space combat: check
way better character-creation: check

It even looks alike.
I'm perplexed.
first is not a star war :P
2nd you are 2 years late, people already complained, cryed, killed, suicide, doomsayer about this game, result F2P XD
3rd star treck and star war hate and love each other, you can find one who like both but you will always find one or another who would kill the otehr side because it a copy of what he like

It's a decent FTP game. It was terrible as a pay game, at launch. If it had released as-is, it would have done much better.
I hit features that TOR doesn't have, and laugh at how Bioware got away with doing it.
I can tell it's still easy to burn out on STO with too much play, so the best move is not to do it! That's the best part of it's FTP setup, you don't feel a need to maximize your subscription playtime and money.
The ground combat is still full of lagtime, so there's plenty that's still broken about the game.

Yes I can see that it would be easy to burn out on it. I play it to satisfy my craving for some sci fi and play it as a side game. Its a fun game as long as you dont over do it.
Really? This game sucks and Im not having fun? Im going to unsub right now. Thanks for the tip.

Seriously? They really did that?

Absolutely. He was in the Winter Wonderland zone .... short, green Ferengi dressed in robes who looked/talked just like Yoda and gave you your very own Lightsaber (called Nanopulse) Bat'leth or Lirpa.
They added the TRON (aka Aegis) set... why not Star Wars stuff too? They have no regard for the source material.

Wow...just...wow. I realize that real world holidays are going to make it into most MMOs, just because there are players that expect them, but they couldn't be bothered to do it in a lore appropriate way?

Game wasnt overly great. if you have played Eve this game is gonna feel kiddish and simplistic to you. if you found Eve way too complex and want something simplier with the downside being less freedom then this game is great for you.
Because i can. I'm Hopeful For Every Game, Until the Fan Boys Attack My Games. Then the Knives Come Out. Logic every gamers worst enemy.

It is fairly evident that Cryptic has no regard for Trek lore, so it does not surprise me that Ferengi Yoda and his lightsabers were in STO. Heck, they are crapping all over the IP by turning it into an online casino, so a little more trashing/disregard for the lore is no big deal to them.
Cryptic butchered the Star Trek spirit, and all the raids, instas, guns and flashy phasers in the world won't help it. Star Trek is tech-fiction, diplomacy, enigmatic stories all the way. STO still has NONE of this...
Bioware however, while doing basically the same thing and adding story, respected Star Wars: Fantasy, Sabers n Guns. They sprinkled it with voiced dialogue and nice vistas and added a little backstory. But it's star wars, it's pew pew in space no questions asked...
So hell yea, I do know why STO is a "hands off" title for Trekkers and as a game itself, it still falls short in so many ways. Shoebox-gaming anyone?

EDIT: Just take a look at the most successful single player titles of both IPs. "Star Trek: A Final Unity" and "Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy"... Those games are worlds apart. A true oldschool point and click adventure and an FPS.
A Star Trek MMO should have had player crewed starships. I want to have 30 or 40 active people wandering around my ship doing things. I also think they killed the IP by making it a mindless war grinder arcade shooter.
"I am not in a server with Gankers...THEY ARE IN A SERVER WITH ME!!!"
I bought a lifetime sub before the game launched (yes I drank the koolaid) but when you dont see any content other then c-store fluff for a year and now there will only be 2 FE this year and not 5 like we were told it makes playing this game painful. I stopped playing about 6 months ago and dont miss a thing about it.
I've tried playing three times since it went F2P. I just hate everything about it so far. My character runs like he's got a load in his pants. The space combat is clunky. The ground combat is worse.
I haven't given up on it yet, simply because of the IP and F2P. But I find it highly annoying and non intuitive in many ways.

No I had run away by then. Kind of glad I did.
So much crap, so little quality.

, but still think it's an almost total mess
I have tried both and i like STO better.
Well, the F2P does not hurt. So i am sticking with STO as my second MMO for the time being (first is of course WOW).
To answer the question posed by the thread title, it is because everyone is too busy puking over the flagrant cash grab the game has turned into. http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=253446

The answer to the question is simple.
Cryptic butchered the Star Trek spirit, and all the raids, instas, guns and flashy phasers in the world won't help it. Star Trek is tech-fiction, diplomacy, enigmatic stories all the way. STO still has NONE of this...

ShardWarrior and Meridion:
I couldn't agree more. Well stated.
I was a fool and tried the game yet again just to see how it has changed.
There are some additions since launch. And yet it still falls short of feeling like Star Trek.
It's not about fighting, it's about balance. It's not about enlightenment, it's about balance. It's not about balance.
Here are just a couple of my objections to STO.
1. It is no where even close to what the Star Trek is about.
2. It has no ablity to have a non-military charector.
Just try to be a miner or a trader, can't be done.
There are more reasons but it's not worth the effort to type them out.
