This thread is made on good suggestion from one member of this site. Open world mmos are more common than instanced, but there are enough of those too.
So, do you prefer open world mmo or instanced one is more to your liking?

Open world hands down, Do i need to show my workings out?
Depends on the gameplay. I'd kill for another Asheron's Call but at the same time I find Vindictus extremely fun, as well. Basically, when I'm looking for a fun world to experience, AC, EVE and other open environments are what I head for. When I am looking for a fun game to experience, I lean toward instanced environments because they offer an experience that is much more tailored to delivering that.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

It is possible to have both. Open persistent world with instances to reduce the load on servers. Like playing Guild Wars or Dragon Nest with instances but when you go out of town there are still people there out on the map with you.

I personally prefer open world but you can't have a full open world enviornment.
There would be too many "kill stealing" and long lines to finish quests depending on how many mobs are available and how long they take to respawn after each kill for quests. (of course I would be speaking of new game releases)
Instances are a double edged sword to me, you dont want a open world dungeon where you're going in a few minutes behind a group and all of a sudden elite mobs just appear when your group isn't ready and get completely wiped and most dungeon bosses don't typically respawn as fast as other mobs.
Also, if there is a group that just decides to farm a dungeon boss, there will be conflict with other groups coming along just wanting to get that mission completed
There are alot of pro's and con's but just wanted to share a few of my opinions
I dont know. Its a good idea, but are you sure that is possible? First, developers must be interesed to even consider something like that (as everybody knows, they dont like to stray to far from there usual mmo nonsense) and second, gamers themselves got to have something to say about that (do they like that or not).
The mix modern MMORPGs use seems ideal. Open world for collaborative/social areas (where open world works best) and instanced for gameplay areas (where instancing works best.)
Many of the problems associated with open world gameplay can be solved, but you'd expend so many dev hours solving them and so many of the solutions would seem very arbitrary to players, that it's not a very appealing path for a developer to take.
"What is truly revealing is his implication that believing something to be true is the same as it being true. [continue]" -John Oliver
A good mix, I think, but I am a big fan of good gameplay so I'd be leaning towards instanced more. Having some physics, collision detection, connecting hits, even aiming would be great in an open world but it can't be done in large scale. Open worlds tend to be "lite" on the game side. They cut too much to be able to handle all those players in the same area.
For example, I'd really be thrilled to play a space-sim with little more emphasis on gameplay than Eve has. Something like true-collision detection, damage models, not just on/off-ing ship modules but abilities that have immediate and single effect, more AOE effects, shockwaves from explosions so that ships are veered off-course, more hands-on controls over your ship - prehaps even direct flight... Stuff like that. But you can't have those with hundreds of players in the same battlefield.
I loved the combat in Guild Wars 1. They had collision detection, sharp controls, skill interruption mechanics, and you could dodge projectiles. It was all possible because the game's combat areas were instanced and limited the party size to 8. It really took the most out of traditional MMO combat (tab-targeting, skillbar etc.).
I see no difference in having either 100 players in the same area or 200. It makes no matter to you after a certain point. And I don't like that gameplay suffers because of vain pursuit of higher player numbers.

One is, by definition, right for an MMORPG, the other should be forced to use the term MORPG.
Do I need to spell out which is which?
Of course not.
Open world all the way. Fully open world = me happy.
I prefer open world but I do understand the merits of having instanced areas. Most games seem to have a mix of both these days, some probably a little more instances then I'd like but whatever. I do think a game should have open world roaming bosses though and hate when they don't or just have a few. Some older games had extremely long respawn timers which I don't think is good but I love me some open world bosses. Fighting over claims with other guilds and having them watch you slaughter the monster they wanted is just fun.
i ll use an exemple!check mortal online if you hit it first time on its night cycle!you see nothing, just shadows like in real life and i bet if your there on the moon cycle you ll see moonlight only on those days!toweliee yesterday tried it,he kept complaining .what do i do!we tell him buy a torch!he kept ignoring us.we arent talking gameplay here we re talking basic comon sense!and everything is like that in mortal online!it is open world.some even went so far as to say there are no quest in mortal online lol.
people are so used to wow that if it is a bit a challenge like going buyin a torch to see they re all confused but if the raid is very hard they re happy .hell buying a torch is way easier then a raid lol.but people lost the ability to use comon sense in mmo.even if mortal onlinw wich is an open world mmo .if people dont use their brain .i bet most will hate it!instanced can also be great check wow ,rage of fireland daily.it is open instanced.very fun!what is bad is closed instanced!(the server willfully split player!
Personally I'm massively in favour of open world as much as possible. I play mmo's to share my world with other people, even if they are trying to steal my mobs. A well designed game could probably eradicate/minimize that issue anyhow.
Having said that, I would be in favour of instancing if used in conjunction with some kind of random dungeon generator. Still minimally, say 3 instances, the depths of a forest, the sewers of a major city, a classical castle dungeon, whatever. But randomized.
Pie in the sky, but I CAN DREAM GODDAMIT.
People do not hate MO because it is "too challenging" or because they are used to WoW, they hate it because it is, open world or not, a horrible game.

Dungeon content - definitely instanced. It is HORRIBLE to have large crowds in a dungeon. It is hard to tune the difficulty and almost impossible to have interesting scripting & boss fights. That is why Diablo 1,2, and 3 are not open world games.
The only place i can see an open world work is a large war but RPG is about small group adventuring and an open world is nice but not central.
You are right about one thing. Nowadays gamers are more sheeps than logical being. We are used to be told where to go, what to do or what to buy in mmos (not so different in real life), that simple thing as to buy torch to see through dark is impossible task to comprehend.
Not this one again! Can we let this particual straw man burn to the ground already. It has nothing to do with the difficulty and everything to do with the polish/content and company behind it.
A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...
Agreed, focusing your gameplay on groups of 10 or something like that is in no way massively multiplayer.
I agree with this guy too.
I have no real preference save there needs to be a feeling a dynamic world. For example, Guild Wars felt far more alive and dynamic, despite being heavily instanced, than Star Wars which mostly open-world (well, open canyons really...)
I guess I'm saying -- execution is the key.
That's much of SWTOR in a nutshell. Some open places. Some instanced. Some are combinations.
Open world mmos are more common? Really? Someone needs to do a count because it seems every MMO since Lotro has been NON open world.
I prefer Open World any day over any other type. And by Open world I mean Darkfall Online Open world or Vanguard.
I hate instances because the whole point that I play MMORPGs is to play with other people. Instances make me feel like I am player a single-player game or a game that allows up to 6 players or something along those lines. If I wanted to play those kinds of games than I would buy a PS3 and a couple other controllers. Console games have much better graphics and gameplay than most MMORPGs.

Yes they are. I dont know what exact percentage is, but yea, open world mmos are majority. If you want or have time, do the count. Let me know when you are done.
But, this thread is not about that. It is about do you like more open or instanced mmos and what are your likes or dislikes in them. How can they be improved?
open world, instanced dungeons and raids are fine.
I've got the straight edge.
