Tera combat criticism?

Tera combat criticism?

has there been any criticism on the combat out there already?

I was looking at this video

and the gameplay too me, looks kind of dull.

I figured the combat would be a bit more interesting than tab targeting games. but the gameplay looks sluggish and dull AI from the creatures.

whats your opinion?

is this truly a step forward?

I can't see the video because youtube is prohibited where I am, however I will try to look at it later and see if it's a good example.

If it's low level combo-chaining and glyphs really speed things up once you get higher level, also some classes are chunkier than others, allows for everyones tastes to be met.

That's a pretty dull example, although it's true that some of the open world mobs can be sluggish and telegraph way too much to offer a challenge. That said, as of the first CB, I can vouch that many other open world mobs are quicker and telegraph much less, and the BAM's and dungeon mobs are a lot more aggressive and mobile.

I suppose they can't amp things up too quickly, since they're trying to convert people who are used to tab-target/facetank grinding, but I certainly wouldn't object if they happened to offer a server with the aggression turned up.

Do you make a thread bashing Tera every day?

You'd think that you'd wait atleast a week after your previous thread was closed by a mod.

Lol shit, if I saw the video originally I wouldn't have made a serious comment damn. He's just a troll...

The combat in Tera isnt for everyone. I find it light years ahead of our current mmo's. I get bored with the tab targeting and grab a sandwich gameplay. The combat in Tera is dynamic and it's a lil easy for the first 1-15 levels just to get you use to combat, like one of the poster mentioned then eventually it gets more challenging.

Anyways, let him troll on. People are gonna be curious to why he and others are bashing it and maybe try the game out to see what the hates about.. Probably end up causing some people to liking Tera instead of hating it. He's just creating advertisement.. :P

Perhaps look at more than one video showing a slow, hard hitting toon. While the combat isn't revolutionary it still beats looking at a cast bar for 3 seconds.

I do like the idea of the combat system, although there are certain aspects I believe could be improved. Mind you I have only played 2 melee classes at low level so this may change as level increases.

    Pros:

-Whatever your weapon clips, it damages.

-No targeting, hit what you're aiming at, very action type game based.

    Cons:

-I don't know if it's some sort of animation delay, but using a followup ability doesn't seem to always go off. Have noticed this after dodging as well.

-Movement while using abilities isn't very good.

Hmmm that's weird, I thought my Popori slayer animations and human warrior animations were very good(and i'm an animator, 2D only lol). Maybe it depends on the class...I didn't really like Baraka's movements for a melee class.

besides the hitbox issues for small and big races its pretty good.

Combat is pretty slow compared to other action based games and even action MMOs. The chaining is also a little clunky and should be smoothed out which might take some time for it to be worked on since they are more working on pumping out content.

the real-time combat is unique, but ironically, in using real time combat, the fighting actually seems slow-paced in comparison to a game like WoW.  It doesn't help that at the low levels, you basically have no fear of death and no real reason to do little else than spam your attack button (which is far more boring than auto-attack combat).  For this reason alone, my friend thought the game was pretty lame and said he'd never play it.

Speaking of that, I was only level 15, but I think first impressions do matter.  If you have to wait until you're at the endgame for the combat to get good, the system has failed.

The mobs I saw come in two varieties.  There are single pull encounters and multi-mob encounters.  The single pull encounters seem to have way too much HP in terms of the damage you do, and I found the multi-mob encounters to be annoying as there are like 8 mobs that swarm you that all die in 2-3 hits.

I don`t agree with this at all lol, nothing is more boring than a low level in WoW, I can`t even do it anymore. Little to be rewarded later on either, it`s just as boring doing quests at level 60 as it is at level 5, maybe even more boring because it takes longer to kill the thing and you still have no fear of death even at that point.

[Mod Edit] I suggest OP watches videos of highlevel characters to get a better understanding.

Get to lvl 20-25 and things really start to pick up.  You can glyph skills at 20 and things just start to feel better.  More skills, faster and smarter mobs, BAMs.  Just give it a little bit longer and you'll hit the point that has that MMORPG hook that makes you wish you were playing when you're at work. :P

Can you really glyph skills at level 20? In the korean version it used to be at 25+ for 10 points and then 1 point per level after that.

I watched the video and i was expecting worse. There may be some aspects about the combat to be critizised, but in the video it looked rather ok.

But the "forward walking only" irritates the hell out of me. I just cant get used to that.

I signed for beta this morning. Hope they pick me, because I've longed for non-tab-targetting combat in MMOs for years.

I might think different if I get to try it out, but I really support this kind of combat evolution in MMOs and hope it will became industry standard.

The game does have it's issues but the combat at least is fun. My only gripe with it is that for the first 20 levels or so it is incredibly easy. And I mean easy in a sense that you actually have to go out of your way to die.

I've hear that it does get more difficult during later levels and the instance mobs and BAMs are apparently a lot tougher. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to try instances or fighting BAMs during the last beta test, hopefully I'll be able to during the next phase.

Edit: I mostly played as a Slayer (same class as in the video) in the last beta test and it seems that the person in the video did not seem to use combos which actually speed up combat. The way they work is each properly executed skill in a particular combo chain actually lowers the activation time of the next skill in the chain. Properly executed, they can be absolutely devastating.
