This really fuckin' shits me, its $59.99US on the website but $79.99AUD advertised for Aus.

Considering that $59.99 converted to AUS is $55.80AUD...

    http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert/?Amount=59.99&From=USD&To=AUD

Correction, they sold 2 million boxes and had 1.7 million subs OR players on their free month. That means the population declined by 300k, triple what their "Main opponent" lost.

The only thing that will get real at the end of a year will be that SWTOR is going to be joining WAR and AoC in the big launch and fast decline club.

I beleive you missed the latest financial that actually was posted after the free month and did not include those numbers, let me see if I can find a link  was posted on the main SWTOR site so should be easy to locate.

One thing I find funny is if anyone says anything remotely positive about the game (not talking fanboys or girls) just something other then a negative comment, haters come out of the woodwork to put the game down. Just don't get why anyone thats hates or just dislikes the game would even take time to comment?

I for one don't waste time commenting on mmos I no longer play....am I odd or is anyone else the same way?

i dont hate the game and i've made negative comments..i think people are pissed off cos they really wanted to play this game..but its bug ridden ,the pvp sux,no end game hardly.the thing is they charged 50% more for this game than they normally do for any other mmo's,well at least in my country anyways..and given the budget  they had i think people have a right to fell disappointed, pissed off,annoyed..now i do agree people hate a game without trying it.but lets look at lets say rift(i dont play anymore, was going to sub a year but changeed mind).that game when released was so polished and has better gfx, gameplay imo, just my opinion..content wise rift was light..and so is swtor..everyone had a dig at rift for being so i dont know boring, tbh this game is even worse..its instanced to death, lack of content or things for people to do..on release they didnt even have the basic stuff like a friggin guild bank..i mean this is 2012.did thery really honestly think they were going to get away with this..no wonder there is a backlash.i really hope this game succeeds and gets better cos i want to play it,but £45 for a game thats in this state,i bought and played vanguard at launch,i aint goin thru that again.not saying that this is has bad as that but i think you know wot i mean, and also everything is so damn lifeless.(ok i have got my tin hat on ..bring it on guys).p.s.if i got anything wrong plz correct me..

Wow, stop smelling the paint fumes.  They are opening the game to more people, it is natural that will mean more numbers.  Tin-foil-hat says:  "This must be some kind of conspiracy".

Its funny you would see a legitimate business strategy as a conspiracy.

Don't act like this is some benevolent decission for the consumers, its business.

Of course it's business, which is why they are opening the game up to other countries.  What company looking to get the most bang for their buck wouldn't do that?  You're the one suggesting that they are simply doing this to hide low retention numbers, which is an asinine theory by even the most diehard, tin-foil hat wearing standard.

Don't worry, man.  Eventually they'll run out of countries.  Then you can pounce and say, "I told you so!"  if it makes you feel better.

Anyone with an ounce of self respect knows that if they achieved their pre stated goal of 75% retention, they would have posted it and brought in dancing naked women with it tatooted across their chests if they had. So only a fool would think that most means over 75%.

Most means somewhere between 50.1-70% (probably 60% or so) if you use pure logic and deduction. But most definetly doesnt mean 1.7 or even 2 million. because when he hinted that they had 1 million logins a day, he may have tipped his hat right there. Which included non paying subs.

Q: Just one really quick follow-up, can you give us a sense for how many of those 1.7 million active subs we can expect to convert to paying subs after the initial

    free month?

A: I can tell you that the majority of the 1.7 million are paying subscribers for us currently, which is great considering we're only, like I said, 42 days into the launch and you have a 30-day trial period.

Most of 1.7, in other words 851K or slightly more is most.

I never said they do this to "hide low retention".

I said its a strategy to -increase- their subscription numbers for quarterly reports, which is exactly what they are doing.

Its infuriating in the sense that we won't get any concrete numbers (good or bad) that are not skewed favorably this way. This has nothing to do if they want to "hide" something or not.

Afaik, they do not need to hide anything if you go by that EA statement of 80% retention in month 1 which is very good. Now in Month 3 if they release the game for pacific/asia and get another 2 million sales, how can we tell what the retention is?

This goes both ways, you will also never find out if the game is (really) growing for example because the sub-data gets drowned out in the box-sales of the new region.

The only way to know would be a concrete statement on paper of divided subs/box sales of SWTOR-west and SWTOR-asia, which EA will never release, because that would be a bad investor-strategy.

Corporations are in the business of making themselves look good for investors by any legal means necessary.

I cant keep up! pre-ordered the game and got in pre-launch.  I'm a 50 assasin, havent done many raids so pve gear is slacking, full pvp gear which is a mix of champion and centurion. Level 53 valor so still a way to go before i hit battlemaster. Loads to do in this game for me and im pretty hardcire 30+ hours a week easily!

LOL, yes Im making up logic. does most mean all to you in your fantasy world?

No your making up numbers and assuming with no clear evidence to back it up. And you know what they say about assuming.

If from those 1,7 mil accounts created over 1 mil had converted to a PAID subscription after January 20th. Believe me! They would have announced and confirmed it with great fanfare!

It would mean they had over a 70% retention rate, which no other MMO the last 5 or so years has managed to achieve.

So when they back out on the question and come with a vague answer that the "majority" has converted to paid subscription, you can bet it's on the lower end of the spectrum (between 50,1-60 %) around 800-900k subscribers.

And really... in todays world with heavy saturation with MMO's, having 800-900k paying subscribers is actually really good!

But ofcourse for the Stakeholders it isn't enough, as they want WoW numbers and anything below that is bad. /shrug

{mod edit}  My point isn't the obvious that the game is bleeding people, its the fact that companies use doublespeak to paint rosie pictures, which is why the stock market itself crashed not too long ago.

The game will survive, for a short while, but the best thing that could ever happen to the hobby is that EA makes little to no profit from this WOW carbon copy themepark, and badly done to boot. If you like the game, good for you, others felt misled, lied to, and decieved. I will rejoice when the profits from this game dwindle, and they will.

Otherwise we get this over and over :

"As someone who's worked on an MMO himself, I can tell you this attitude is all-too pervasive.

We made a game that had a beautiful complexity, that worked and that our players loved.

And then the CEO marched in and started a meeting about how to "remove complicated features to make it easier for WoW players to understand".

Upper Management [aside from say, Customer Service MAYBE] doesn't care about their userbase. That's what they pay Marketing for, to make you think that they do; all they really care about is profiting for their investors.

That means they are either going to just take the safe bet themselves, and copy WoW, or they will be forced to do that. And if they don't, the Board will fire them and hire someone who will."

Logic is a quality every decent troll lacks. And even the not so good ones, like Bunks

But one should ask himself: "why people pass a good part of the day writing about a game the ydislike? And trying to persuade others that they shouldn't like it and it's dying?"

what kind of sad bastard with no life does that? well aside Bunks of course

Wow SMH is still posting to me even though i blocked him long ago.

As for you, what kind of sick bastard supports a company that has been the most unethical, misleading, and unscrupulous in the industry for years now? My point isn't the obvious that the game is bleeding people, its the fact that companies use doublespeak to paint rosie pictures, which is why the stock market itself crashed not too long ago.

Wasn't that Raph Koster's famous quote about how and why the NGE happened on SWG?

    Ironic huh?

to you this is very personal and important

your whole life and existence is dedicated to hate and trolling

me? I am just someone who is having fun with the game

You? You are just someone who hates the game and is desperate because people ignore your futile attempt to troll and because the game is going to be the biggest MMO in the west

imagine that. Living in a world where TOR is the king

They will have to dub a lot of considering the amount of voice overs. At least, translate all the texts, not mentioning modifying certain aspects of teh game because of local legislations.

I don't think we will see an asian version before next year

And you say Im letting it get to me LOL. You and the others just can't stand that I take a very middle of the road stance basing it all on numbers and metrics, the few we have. So here, let me show you a quote from the people that were defending the game to investors at EA, this is their take on where the game will settle.

Evan Wilson of Pacific Crest wrote Friday that he has raised his sales estimate for “Star Wars” to 2.2 million units from 1.5 million units for the quarter, and said he remains “comfortable” with his 800,000 subscriber target when the company’s fiscal year ends in late March.

“Admittedly, we set our expectations as if Star Wars was to be a good, not great, MMO,” he wrote. “Fortunately, we think the company did too.”

So when I see people who blindly take what EA schills spew at a meeting, nebulous comments that have dual meanings, and biodrones like yourself take them as cold hard facts, will only lead to your own major disappointment. To me, 800k would make the game profitable, which is their "predictions", I would like to see it stay at 500k for a year or so. So the Hobby overall benefits from WOW clones no longer are the template to copy. The game itself, I could give two craps about. I know what it is and what it isn't.
