That is a hard question to answer. I've played them both and all I can say is they are different. AC is probably more complex and customizable, but AC2 is more user friendly and far better graphics. Of course both are releasing expansion packs soon, AC2 this week so both games will change to some degree. One aspect I like playing AC2 is that you don't have to recover your corpse when you die while in AC if you don't recover your corpse, you will lose loot that drops when you die.

AC2 has a free trial, I don't believe AC does. I think they are both good games in their own way

Both are very good, but for different reasons. I agree with everything that alekhin said, but I would like to add that quests and overall content is bigger in AC because the game has gotten updates for about 5 years now. Both are among the best mmorpgs out there.

I would say AC is more challenging, but there are 3 things that really annoy me about AC. One is the lack of a name over the mob. Sometimes they are very hard to see. Second is having to micromanage the buffing. I was a battlemage and it seemed I spent half my time buffing. That got old after awhile. In AC2, you only have to buff once after logging in and you stay buffed. Plus when you join a fellowship, all members automatically get your group buffs. Third is the ancient chat system and only 1 chat window. The only worse one I've seen is EQ. AC2 isn't the best chat system, but at least you get 4 separate windows (many newer games have unlimited windows) that you can be customized.

AC takes awhile to learn, whereas AC2 is very beginner friendly. As I've said in an earlier thread. You will lag in AC2 if you don't have a high-end processor and graphics card. I would recommend at least a Radeon 9700 pro or an NVidia equivalent (never used NVidia cards). Plus a P4 or AMD 64 processor (I use an Athlon XP 1700+ and run into some minor lag frequently), and at least 1 Gig of Ram (although you can probably play on 512 MB). You can play AC on any P3 (or even a maxed out P2).

Muling in AC is much easier in AC. You have your own housing with chests for muling. Plus you have full privacy being able to stop anyone from entering your abode. You can also drop full bags so an alt mule can pick them up. In AC2, the only way to mule is to drop one item one at a time and have an alt pick up the loot one item at a time. There is no complete privacy, so you have to find an out of the way place or safe place so someone won't steal your loot.

Second is having to micromanage the buffing. I was a battlemage and it seemed I spent half my time buffing.

They made some improvements to make enchantments much quicker to cast. Banes now can be cast when you select yourself, and they will go on all your armor at once. Creature enchantments now all cast at level 1 speed. Level VII spells last 1 hour, level VI 45 minutes, and all below 30 minutes. Buffing is very easy now.

The chat window thing never really bothered me. I was able to download a plugin for a serverwide guild called the Leafcull Coalition. Only on the leafcull server though. The /a chat thing was nice also (let's you speak to everyone in your allegiance).

I just remembered one more thing about ac1 that drove me crazy. Having to manage mana stones. Always having to make sure I had enough of them to make my jewelry stay active because i didn't have arcane lore trained and would have to get the right buff. It drove me nuts having to go and replenish the stones all the time.

I personally like AC more than AC2, but AC2 is still a good game. AC is more grinding to level game, while AC2 is a questing and less grinding game. AC has to be more complex than AC2. AC is more of a solo game, while AC2 can be played with groups. Everything else I was going to say has been covered already image.

Interesting-- I made this same post on the AC1 forum and everyone said ac1 was a better game.
Not many people are saying differently on the ac2 forum.

Too bad ac1 doesnt have a free trial like ac2 has------ac2 here I come :)

I wouldn't say AC1 is a better game, that is subjective. It definitely is more complex and the player has more control. The problem I have with AC1 is that I spent too much time micro-managing. You always had to spend time buffing before going into battle, including buffing each piece of equipment. Had to make sure that jewelry was still charged, therefore making constant trips to buy mana stones. Make sure you aren't carrying too much in your inventory, especially as a beginner because this affects your stamina and ability to run. The timers and micro-managing became too much for me. I just wanted to quest, not spend time preparing to quest or have to find a buff-bot to prepare to quest.

IMO, AC2 has a much better buffing system. You only need to cast it once after logging in and the buff stays active indefinitely. Same if you are in a group, your buff automatically affects everyone in the group. You don't need to cast buffs for everyone. Leveling is very fast to begin, but starts bogging down when you reach level 30. I definitely liked AC2 more than AC1 (my first MMO).

If you want just a standard, shallow MMP, AC2.

If you want a complex, skill based, challenging MMP, AC1.

    what mythik said and...

AC2 was turbines attempt to make a game exactly like everything else... a hybrid between the most popular games.

But what they didn't realize is that AC fans like AC... NOT the other games... so they completely Alienated All of their fans to try to attract people that were already happy with the games they were playing...  If you want to attract people from other games you have to target those most likely to leave, people looking for something different. Not only that, but they had their entire fanbase crying bloody murder about AC2 discouraging people from trying it.

I've played both games, and I really think AC2 was given too little consideration in many peoples minds.  I only tried the free trial twice.  What made me decide not to play AC2 was that I could never find anyone ingame... it's was a ghost town on the server I played on.  And... there should be a penalty for death in PvP, the spoils go to the victor.

The beauty of AC1 is the complexity of it all but at the same time level doesn't mean everything.  Items have variance(eg, an iron dagger could be anywhere from 1-3 to 10-20 depending on quality/level. and they have extra bonuses and spells that can be found on the weapons to boot! this is a very good item system.) When you compare this to WoW's item system... You can tell that WoW's item system sucks... BIG TIME.  Character Creation is very good aswell in AC1 with the ability to train what skilsl you want to use, of course if you want to be "uber" there are templates that give you an overall best change in PvP however, for PvE you can be whatever the hell you want to be and still have fun.

For the longest time I was down on Turbine... but they've fixed up somethings, and I'm really enjoying Asheron's Call 1:Throne of Destiney.  Try it again, for the first time!
