I find the ones currently available to be sub-par.

IMO: Your best bet would be to wait for End of Nations, or hunt for one of their beta-keys.

Well, there is Dawn of Fantasy. It is buy to play. But it is more like a lobby game...you can't really conquer cities or take lands over.

I actually find browser mmorts's MUCH better than the higher quality 3d or 2d ones that require a client...you can expand your empire, build new cities and take over other players. Some allow even building on the map itself. The browser MMORTS's are more MMO than anything else out, at least for MMORTS style games. Plus, even worse, a lot of MMORTS games actually have a reset...so they aren't persistant at all. The browser ones tend to be more persistant.

    Ministry of War

It's an interesting browser based  game. Had fun for a couple of weeks in beta but haven't played it since.

Actually, I forgot this was in my favorites...probably because it is still in development.

But this looks to be a TRUE MMOrts...and not a lobby based system with a bunch of instances. From the sounds of it, it will be like Sins of a Solar Empire, but with a massive (and seamless) galaxy that is filled with many players and it will be persistant too

It sounds really good...hopefully they can pull it off. So far, the only good MMORTS games have been browser based.

This, unfortunately. List is here at mmorts.com http://www.mmorts.com/index.php?cmd=games

There is also a f2p one that mixes rts on one side(bugs) and rpg on the otherHumans) but can't remember what it's called.

Shattered Galaxy is a gem. Yeah it's kind of old, but what the heck. Ok, you don't build bases or anything, but it's still an MMORTS.

Saga is good. Nice community, good devs, giveaways now and then. Needs some love too, get the word out!

I enjoy Age of Empires Online from Microsoft.  Most of the good stuff is free, but you will have to spend money if you want to try races other than Greek and Egyptian or if you want to do any of the PvP maps.

I have been looking into Illyriad. Free, no download, might as well give it a shot.

That game rocks, well untill you hit the wall for grinding to upgrade your units.

But the first 30 lvls are awesome

Well I'm not gonna lie, it is pretty damn small. But they're nice people and the game really does deserve more attention. Check the Saga facebook page too, the devs post there.

That one I can recommend too. There's also Settlers online, if you're into that
