Hi guys,
i have been playing MMORPG's for years;
I have played EQ2 for 4 - 5 years and decided to quit due to it been all the same now and doesnt seem to be gettig much better. Lots of players left etc;
i took a break for a year and now want to start playing something again
I have tried recently;
Rift - i have a L13 mage - now i really dont fully understand about souls and its confusing. its almost like you can be whatever mage you want to be when you want to be? also its realy grindy. I am yet to reach any main place yet just seems to be endless questing, also no main story line's?? does it get better and worth buying??
SWTOR - I love this game but it got boring quick, the story lines are great but oh my there are bugs! i think i will have a go again in 6 months or so
Aion - i played on release but i wasnt that pleased with - has it got any better??
AOC - No thanks, really not a good game in my eyes
Wow - not a chance lol
Is there anything else to play? ive been looking around and the obvis is waiting on GW2 or Tera but is there anything i can play now ??
Comments
I feel your pain. I am going down the same road.
I have played just about every game out there but nothing currently is getting my hopes up.
Hell, I even played a ton of beta's and free to play ones, notta.
Good luck finding 1 that draws you in. There just isnt anything there right now.
Seems like developers have recently forgotten that games are suppose to be fun.
Settlers online until GW2 is released. Other than that, try some F2P and save your money, MMO's just are not cutting it these days.
To be honest you haven't been too specific in what you like in a MMO.
The fact that you don't give any explanation why you don't like AoC and WoW doesn't make it any easier to understand your preference
Anyway
Aion has more Quests now, but the end game apparently is PvP focused (from what I read)
Rift has an EQ2 feel particularly when you get to the end game so if you liked EQ2 you might like this, since it shares the same producer (Scott Hartsman)
I would have suggested WoW but since you discarded it without any reason, what's the point
I am an old vet myself and trust me I know the feeling. Of the games you have tried, what is it that made you stay and/or leave? This would make it easier to help suggest something. In my case, I am trying to give LOTRO a genuine try because I miss a vast world and a good storyline. As I don't give a damn about PvP this game thus far seems to be delivering on what I have been missing in other games released over the past few years.
I think there all trying to have something new to add to mmorpg and not concentrating on what makes a good mmorpg
i really hope someone has a suggestion on what to play otherwise i might have to fire up the Ps3 and keep playing Skyrim
Wow - The graphics i know which are improved but whats the point of me having a Alien ware lappie with a GTX560 GPU to play a game that hasnt got the graphics? wow the last time i played it was filled with an endless amount of kids and it is all about the grind? I am open for you to explain why i should now join upto a game now which is 7 - 8 years old?
Again, we need more information in order to offer good advice. Please tell us what it is you like/don't like about the games you have played. Without that information we can throw names out all day and it might as well just be a waste of time.
Ive never tried LOTRO, i suppose i could never get into my head how they managed to make a mmorpg out of the series as i read the books? I will have a look and download a trial if there is one
Alright -
I liked Eq2, the game play, how the storys fit into place, easy to navigate and not a endless supply of hotbars
AOC - i didnt like the general combat system and thats all to be honest.
Im looking for something suitable for both 1 player and groupage, Fantasy syle gameplaye, wont take me 1 year to master and lots of players too!
I also skipped LOTRO when it first launched, kinda wish I hadn't now that I am playing it. It's turned "F2P" with a cash shop but honestly you can just play the game and not spend any real cash as the points can be earned in game (albiet slowly). If you enjoyed the books you will most likely really enjoy this game as it takes you through the entire story. The best way I can explain it is as if you are playing a side story which follows the books but was never actually written in. The main story will unfold before you and through quests you will follow along interacting with everyone from the books.
That said it won't challenge your system from a graphics standpoint but lets face it, almost all MMO's that have released which spent a decent portion of their budget on graphics has seriously lacked in the story department. Although Trion has done a decent job with Rift I personally find avatars disproportionate and overall world a bit stale.
I think I've played almost everything now.
UO, Eq1, Eq2, SWG, WoW, Vanguard, AoC, Warhammer, LOTRO, D&D, Darkfall, Aion, Rift, the list goes on....
It's the cookie cutter, copy and paste gameplay styles that has grown boring.
My hopes haven't grown high, but Wizardry Online sounds like a fresh approach to the genre.
Permadeath! And a pure maze exploration MMORPG.
If you're looking for a huge challange like I do, Im sure Wizardry will be some competative fun for at least a little while, when it releases in the U.S. It's already launched in Asia.
If you don't mind my asking, what did you play in EQ2? I only ask because I don't normally associate that game with this statement, " not a endless supply of hotbars ". In fact EQ2 is pretty notorious for lots of hotbars compared to other MMOs.
AOC's combat is only different if you are looking to play a melee character to be honest. If you play a caster or ranger its just like any other MMO out there, cept with better graphics and a pretty decent story. That said if you don't enjoy pvp (read: getting ganked) stay away from PvP servers in this game.
Both LOTRO and DDO have seen a huge surge in player base after going F2P, I would say the same it basically true for all the AAA turn F2P (DCUO, COX, etc). So there are plenty of games which you can try out for free to see if you like them and the community if that matters. That last part is because no matter what game you choose, the MMO community as a whole is pretty bad when it comes to general chat.
Funny how you say Rift was grindy when in fact I could level a toon in 2 weeks. Heck, I did that for 4 times, which is why I've got a Warrior, Cleric, Rogue and Mage all at level 50 and have only played that game moderately for 4 months. The only time the game felt grindy was when leveling in Lantern Hook and Shimmersand (those desert zones were dreadful). The soul system is fairly complex but they now provide templates, if you simply don't know how to build a spec.
Personally if I were you, I'd get some cheap single player RPGs, download some F2P MMOs and wait for either: Guild Wars 2, TERA, Guild Wars 2, The Secret World or Guild Wars 2. Did I mention Guild Wars 2.
If your problem is the graphic, then the reason it's pretty shallow, you play games for the fun not for the graphic which is secondary IMHO.
If you care about comunity though, WoW is not an option since it is still full of brats.
If you care about the community I guess Rift is still the best one out of those listed.
I still think Rift is the game for you, you just need to pass lvl 20 to start enjoing it
I feel inclined to second the above advice. Check out some of the F2P MMOs as they won't cost you a cent and will most likely tie you over until some of the newer MMO's hit the market later this year. While we can only speculate at this point those listed above all seem to be breaking away from the standard cookie cutter build in one way or another. Oh and I also agree with regards to Rift, I don't know of anyone aside from you who would claim it is grindy, at least not from a leveling standpoint.
I agree, although you forgot to mention GW2 which looks like an interesting concept
Well the Endgame of Rift was definitely a grind. Typical gear grind; where you grind Tier 1 dungeons, in order to grind Tier 2 dungeons, in order to grind Tier 1 Raids, in order to grind Tier 2 Raids and so on...
I'm gonna try Aion, since it should be going F2P next week and I still have The Witcher 2 and Dragon Age: Origins to complete. If you are unsure about Guild Wars 2, then make sure you head over to the those forums this week beginning Monday because they'll be release a ton of info and gameplay. If you are unsure about The Secret World, then make sure you head over to those forums beginning Tuesday (same reason). As for TERA, go there now.
I recently came back to Rift from SWTOR (love it, but not interested in playing it currently.) I would highly recommend this game.
I have not found it to be remotely grindy; I got my rogue to max level in about 3 and half days /played, and that was without playing optimally, and also taking into account lengthy periods of time being afk.
You can level either via PVP, rift hunting/doing invasions, questing, or dungeons (though realistically unless you are playing a tank you may need to weave in the odd bit of questing/rifting here.) Then when you reach level 45 (I believe) you can start doing “instant adventures” where you are ported to a random area in the game world, grouped into a raid, and given different objectives to go out and complete.
I personally prefer to mix it up mostly between rift hunting and pvping, utilising the sizable exp from instant adventures to get me through my last few levels pretty damn fast. In fact, I did around 3 quests (excluding warzone + dungeon quests) from level 28 to 50 on my rogue: no exaggeration. I did however use the veteran reward exp potion that boosts experience gained from mob kills by 100% (not sure if it works on player kills) but even without that I would say the game strikes a really nice balance between levelling activities and levelling speed; it doesn’t feel too fast or too slow, and you have some decent variety.
The game world, graphics engine, and aesthetic are also (imho) beautiful. The world feels very finely crafted and gives off a rather immersive, satisfying vibe. If you are into exploration you’ll want to travel around Telara just for the environments and world design; the fact that there are artefacts to be found/collected scattered all over is also a nice bonus and incentive.
As for the soul system: loving it. I have always been a fan of MMORPGs with many classes, and Rift is pretty much the only “modern” one around that I am aware of that essentially boasts this feature. My rogue can use multiple melee dps builds with distinct, varying play-styles. He can be also be a tank, a support, or ranged dps (with 2 distinct play-styles available.) That’s all just one class. Then you add in the extra variety from mixing in different soul combos and you are pretty much set as far as diversity etc is concerned. But yeah, if you feel bogged down by having so many options, Rift now has optional pre-set soul paths specifically designed to help ease new players into the system. Also you will be able to find plenty of info/guides on the official forums under your respective class section.
Combat feels nice and slick: quite responsive. Won’t go into too much depth here as there really is not much to say; it’s less responsive than World of Warcraft but more responsive than SWTOR. Overall I find it rather satisfying.
I can’t really speak for much else as I have not done any raiding/dungeons at end-game, and I never picked up a crafting profession. But basically the end-game content you get to look forward to (that I am aware of, probably missing something) is:
Dungeons
Harder versions of dungeons
Raids
Harder versions of raids
Raid rifts
Crafting rifts
Rifts
Ember Isle (whole new level 50 zone)
Warzones
Pvp rifts
World pvp
Chronicles (2 player/solo instances)
World events (available at any level however)
Achievement hunting
Artefact hunting
“Fluff” item hunting
Afking in your city showing off your epic lewt.
More questing / rep farming
That is why I stated specifcally not from a leveling standpoint. All MMO's have a built in "grind", that is the only way to keep people paying money. But I will admit my least favorite is the standard gear grind which defines the end game for many an MMO.
Its not a bad idea to take little break from mmos. After that, try one of from this three upcoming mmos : Archage, Guild Wars 2 and The Secret World. One of those will hopefully be to your liking.
Kind of why I'm looking forward to GW2 most, since it's doing away with that gear grinding mentality. However I see this as being more my Endgame. Much better than grinding for gear.
I would have mentioned Archage but the game still lacks a Western publisher and they do get one, it would be another year until it's fully localized.
Same here: I didn’t really take much notice of how GW2 will be handling the “gear treadmill” but I have recently started to think about it, and I am definitely looking forward to seeing how it pans out.
Hopefully if someone plays that game more than me but are still worse at it than me, they will not be handed a free win. This is sadly not the case in most current MMORPGs where time = power; a concept that is so hardwired into MMO gaming that most people probably don’t even realise how very flawed it can be.
Exactly. That is the soul reason why I stopped PvP'ing in Rift. Because people with Prestige Rank 8 gear would annihilate everyone else. Didn't matter how well I tried to play, I was simply just cannon fodder to be farmed by better geared individuals.
