Never played EQ2, def not FFXI. If they can't manage SWG open areas, then DAoC was awesome at the time. CoH had bases, but if they gave us that level of customizability and functionality on an individual level, I'd make due with something purely instanced. There's tradeoffs.
Just not FFXI's completely virtual trophy room BS.
Should be so much to do you don't care about having a house.
Completely opposite rationale. There's so much more to do in skyrim and many other single player games compared to the repetitive nature of MMOs, and you collect so much stuff you don't want to lose, you need a stash. Yes we now have 'banks' instead, but in an MMO you are living it as much as you are playing it (that's why we put up with the repetitive grind, to 'be' as much as to 'do'). You need a place to call your own, a homebase to drop your stuff off at, a way to express yourself, a way to make your mark on the game world that you own (figuratively of course, don't start lawyering me about virtual items).

I feel like you are really diminishing FFXI's housing greatness..
You could garden in your house, and it produced MEANINGFUL VALUABLE items.
You can have your house give you a perminant buff, like exp loss reduced when you die, or more gold drops off mobs.
Their Housing system was rather clever and has a lot of detail.
Sure it has a bit of "oh wow its a trophy room" but thats kinda the point of a house, any house.
In UO people proudly displayed rare items, in FFXI they did the same, SWG? yep.
i dont want housing. it's really silly as long as it takes up physical space. housing works for singleplayer games, simple as that. the home instance is the housing of MMO's.
All five games you mentioned in the title are single-player. I think you could have used significantly better examples.
I don't know what housing was like in DAoC or FF11. They said they want to add housing eventually but it definitely won't be available at launch. That means they don't count your home district as player housing.
If they add in guild-owned islands like they had in GW1, having player housing in and around your guild hall would be very nice.

DAOC housing is very similar to LOTRO (so I've been told as I have not played LOTRO) There are housing zones where you can go and place a house after you bought the deed, these zones are full of houses, and have several instance copies of the zones so everyone can have room to place their house, you can put all sorts of things in you house to craft stuff or just to look at, from a dragon head to a forge the houses do a lot of things in DAOC.
UO had of course houses being placed in the game world itself, just like SWG, both of which had similar housing features to DAoC, you can collect stuff, craft in your house, have friends inside set rules for them like who can move things or pick stuff up or who is banned from my house etc.
FFXI had a zone you'd zone into that would take you to your specific mog house, its where you put all your stuff, changed your job, and you could garden, and collect a lot of items that would give you various buffs.
These are the types of housing so far I am aware of.
Yeah I mentioned single player games because MMOs with their huge budgets and what should be an emphasis on immersion or a second life when you login should be held AT LEAST to their standards. We give mmo's way too much leeway. We give up too much for what turns out to be a limited and frustrating multiplayer tradeoff. If you think otherwise, then you should be off playing all those other great mmo's out there.

MMO's have technological restrictions, and they have things like control test groups, and market research.
Housing isn't something that is SO demanded that its vital to add in to most games.
Fallout and Skyrim's housing is rather lack luster at best, compared to most MMO housing their houses do simply not enough to warrent being in an MMO.

you get a district of a city. how's that sound?
FFXI or DAoC or EQ2 style housing?
Cus there are many ways to impliment it.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.
Single player games are great for having a house.
Never cared for or needed a house in a MMO.

what does ur personal life have to do with GW2?
You get a whole district!!! And if there isnt personal house like in other games, they prolly will add it later, cus it cant hurt the game in any way.

It just takes up space and is a storage spot.
I love housing in mmos. I think EQ2 spoiled me in that regard. But, GW2 will have guild housing. Thats got to count for something!
I've never cared about a house in game. Now a guild hall is a different story.
