Quake 1 - by far the longest. Maybe not in years, but surely in hours. Both online and offline. I still load it up to give DM2 or DM6 a run-through now and then. :)

Tetris - Used to be my best friend while pulling all-nighters because of work. I still play it in its various versions, on various platforms.

Planescape: Torment - Yes, not a game many will replay more than a couple of times, but I did many many full runs on it and enjoyed each one. Still play it about once each year. My favorite video game of all time.

As for MMOs, the longest played are probably EVE and WOW

WoW - same feeling as ffxi in the start. played vanilla a long time, pvping most of the time, burning crusade i barely played, the other ones i raided and now i am completely fed up with these kind of games.

WoW pretty much destroyed potential long years in gaming, because now everyone wants to be like Blizzard.

Hoping GW2 or Archeage will give me new steam.

WoW didn't do anything of the sort.    It's all the developers too busy trying to be 'the next WoW" that did that.

Only two games I have kept going back to was Diablo 2 and Vanguard. Everything else is just shelf-ware after going through it once

EQ - My god the hours I put into this game. Frankly, don't like to think of it haha

LotR - Still my all time favorite. Loved everything about it outside their PvP

WoW - Yep, regardless what some may say I enjoyed this game. Played it the least out of the three but definitely put a lot of time into it and enjoyed my stay.

Far as regular games go was pretty much a one and done guy. Think the only exceptions were NWN, BG, and the original Pool of Radiance if we're gonna go way back.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

    Vaguely in order:

    • Ultima 3 and Sword of Fargoal

    • Star Control 2

    • FF3 and FF2 (us)

    • Subspace and Quake 2

    • Tribes and Starcraft

    • AOE2

    • TFC and Counterstrike

    • Planetside and Civ4

    • TF2 and WoW

A few of them I didn't play for years (or rather, I didn't play them intensely for years.)  Bold ones I played intensely for over a year.

Street fighter series (in arcades in Japan, nothing came close to this social experience except maybe -->

Goldeneye for N64, mostly with friends, and in college had a 'battle of the dorms tournament' that was pretty fun, and then played the crap out of Gran Turismo1 and 2 , with friends and family alot, that was memorable.

FFXI for like 7 years, the nostalgia I get from that will probably never be duplicated in another mmo like many of you have stated.  It was like your first love that broke your cherry, and everyother girlfriend that came after it was not quite up to par.

I've played Aion since 09, going on 3 years, and will probably continue with that because , idk really......

  • AdamantineAdamantine Member RarePosts: 5,094

Baldurs Gate 2 - For years ? No. But I played it longer than any other singleplayer game, until I really, really, really couldnt see it anymore. Best game ever.

Vanguard - Only game I actually played for years. And plan to keep playing for a while.

As far as Graphical MMOs, I have a pretty short list.

    In order,

    EverQuest

Played this for several years.  It was my first, so there's that magical type feeling.  Especially back then when the internet was still very young in relation to where we're at today.  I played this one the longest.

    Dark Age of Camelot

This was the first MMO to grab my attention, in a big way, after EverQuest.  This was bar none the best MMO on the market in its time (and it's not too shabby even now).  This was truly a work of art.  I would totally play a sequel - provided they kept all mechanics, classes, areas, etc just updated the engine, interface, etc.

In this area I played *countless* MMOs, trying to find the feeling again.. The only one to even get close was City of Heroes, and that was an on and off again relationship.

Fast-Forward to the last year and some change, RIFT!  It's so sad that so many people dismiss this game as a clone.  It is an amazing MMORPG, and it just keeps evolving!  The developer is top-notch, their content is quick and polished like chrome.. I won't go on and on..  But this was the first MMO since DAoC and EQ1 that grabbed me and held me more than a couple months..

Been playing Rift for a year or so now, more counting the Beta Events.  I haven't stopped or unsubbed at all.  It's just that good, in my opinion.  And it just keeps getting better. =)

That's my MMO history.  I was in the closed Beta for WoW, and I took it seriously, testing and reporting things like a good tester.  It just didn't grab me though, and I was back to either EQ or DAoC (Don't remember which it was at that time) when it was released.

So I'm a Rift fanboy I guess.  I don't care.  It's that good.  =)   Sooo many people were just playing til TOR came out, and now they are coming back in droves.. Loving the changes and the game itself.  *shrug* .. If even the people that only planned on playing in the interum come back and love it, I think we have a very bright future.  The population is steadily growing now.  Good time to be there.  Anyway - I know, I know.. I'll stop gushing.

As far as SP RPG's, my most memorable and favorites were the Ultima Series, and definitely the Ultima Underworld (1 and 2), those were amazing for their time.

I only had 1 console growing up (If you don't count the Commodore 64 and Intellivision when I was young), but Zelda should get an honorable mention.  I loved the crap out of that game on my NES.

Anyway, that's me.    Good thread. =)

These were the main MMO's I kept going back to in between new MMO's :

    - SWG , both pre and post NGE. I dont have a substitute for this now. No later MMO is as feature rich as this was late NGE.

    - Guild Wars, on and off, played Guild vs Guild PVP for years even when playing other MMO's.

    - Anarchy Online, mainly as froob, but subbed for a while too.

I also played fairly long :

    - EQ2, one of the few themepark games I could enjoy for a longer period. The mentoring system and how AA works really helped with that. Funny thing is that when it released I thought it was a horrible game.

Other MMO's I came back to a few times with the (in hindsight) silly hope that they would improve a lot :

    -Fallen Earth

    -Vanguard

I never played the really old stuff like UO. Back then RTS and FPS were my favourite gaming genre. Favourites among these are the Age of Empire series and Unreal Tournament.

  • WicoaWicoa Member UncommonPosts: 1,637

Dark age of camelot - The one I have the most nostalgia for and sing the theme tunes in my head, I wish EA didnt have this.

Planetside - Amazing MMOFPS till BFRs were introduced.

World of Warcraft - Great game whatever the negative folks say although the start of cata was a bit borked.

    Non MMOS

    Team Fortress 2

    Tetris

    Master of Magic
This game still can give me days of entertainment.

    Rail Empires: Iron Dragon
A good old standby for me.

    SW:KotOR I and II
    Neverwinter Nights
These three games still give me hours of enjoyment when I start them up.

    Morrowind
With the new texture and model mods, it is like a new game!

    EverQuest
I played for 3 years originally and recently went back. Still having fun on a time-locked progression server.

    - Al

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

My all time favorite: The Baldur's Gate series (nice avatar AlBQuirky, tho Minsc is better!)

Heroes of Might and Magic series

Asheron's Call: To this day, between my kids and myself we usually end up having an account active several months a year.

Kingdom of Drakkar - pre-cursor to MMOs .. a few hundred people is "massive" in this game. I played it for a long time because there is NOTHING out there.

EQ - played for 1 year. Could not stand the boredom of grinding & camping, and the extremely harsh time sinks.

WOW - played for 3-4 years .. stop for a while for wait for new content. Solve all the EQ problem with a lot of polish.

Played a lot of other MMOs out there .. but mostly on and off. None is worth a constant play over multiple years.

WW2online:  Played at launch in 2001 - 2005 solid.  Used to check in every 6 months or so, but stopped even doing that.

EQ2:  Played at launch ( 2004) for about a year then went to Wow.  My stepson took over my account and still plays to this day.

Wow: Didn't like the cartoony style until I took a peek on a private server.  I instantly subscribed and dumped EQ2. Played for long stretches and took breaks on and off until last January.

    Nethack & C64 games perked.

Fifa series, especially on X-box live. It's the only game I play that has me searing at the screen. "FFS! I wanted you to pass there!"

Metal gear solid. I just loved the game.

FF7 probably the first game that I actually paid attention to the story.

Europa Universallis 3. Love the depth and complexity as well as the historical features.

    MMOS:

Everquest. First MMO I played. Felt like a pioneer of the net and made many friends and a few enemies. Back then a MMO (in 3D!) was something special and it was special. I recently went back, and of course it wasn't as special as I remembered it. Somethings are best just remembered.

EVE Online. I have a love - hate relationship with it. It's harshness is both appealling and a turn off. I love the game and it's sandbox nature and the addrenaline rush of a close battle. But, I once lost 40billion isk worth of BPOs and was even posted on the "news" section in the front page of the EVE website. It was my worse ever moment in all the years of my gaming, the humilation and embaressment was too much and I just biomassed my toon and started again. "hey, do want to transport some stuff to jita? I'll give you a slice of the pie." I shudder and say "no, I gotta go see someone about a dog."

  • sirphobossirphobos Member UncommonPosts: 620

Everquest 1 - Would probably still be playing it today but the quality of the expansions has gone down greatly in the past 3-4 years with the declining player base, likely due to a development team a fraction the size of what it used to be.

Planetside - Had an active subscription for several years.

Asheron's Call - Never was a hardcore player after I discovered EQ but still played it every once and a while.  Got back into it briefly last year but it has not aged well.

Warcraft III - Still play it every now and then to this day.

Final Fantasy 7 - 9 - Beat all three of them as recently as last year.

Zelda - Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time - Played both of them again about six months ago.
