I have ordered the game, it's not due to come for a while, but eigher way I want to know a few things about the game pre-hand.
For instance, I would like to know how it is, I mean just overall, how is everything. How many character slots can you have? What's a good class and race to start out with, any tips you would give to people new to the MMORPG series? Just any information you think would be useful to me. Thank you

Welcome to World of Warcraft.
First of all, you will have 10 slots of characters on each server you play. i do not recall if there is also a max number of char overall, but if there is, it is something ludicropus like 50.
So you won't run out of slots anytime soon.
The first important choice you will have to do is either play on a Normal server, a PvP server or a RP server (and soon, a RP PvP server). RP server is a normal server with additional policies to enforce RPing.
Difference between PvP and normal is that on PvP, once out of the 1-20 level zones, you are able to be attacked by any enemy coming your way (and other way around of course). In Normal(and RP) you can't be attacked until you flag yourself for pvp or attack/interact with a enemy NPC or PvP-flagged guy. (also healing friendly NPCs will flag you for PvP for 5 mins).
Once you have choose on which server to play (Pick a low population one if possible, plenty of people but no lag problems, thanks), you have to choose which faction. Horde or Alliance. This choice, on Normal and RP servers is not exclusive. Meaning you can do characters of both factions on that server, but on PvP servers it is. So choose wisely.
After that, Races are mostly just choosen for your personal liking and if they can be the class you wanted to be, so do not worry about choosing race A instead of B.
All 9 classes of the game are worthy in a way or the other and all give a very satysfying playing experiences. All, more or less, are capable of Soloing, so you will be fully able to learn the ropes with your guy/gal before starting grouping (if you want to, you do not have to, not at start and even later on Soloing remains a distinct possibility). Priest is the only one that might have problems soloing at low levels, so i would advise you start with something else.
I would say of the others, maybe, Hunters, Druids and Warriors are the easier to start with. But really, pick any.
After this, you will find yourself in the newbie area of your selected race (with exception of gnomes and trolls that do not have their own but start in the dwarven and orkish area respectivly) and the game will guide you trough tooltips and a very intuitive interface in your first steps of the game, a guy with a huge golden "?" over his head should be right in front of you, start speaking with him (Right clicking on him) and doing what he says. Soon enough you will be running all across the place hunting beasts and recovering stuff for the people around the first village.
When you are level 5-6 you will move on toward the Capital and stops at a bigger town than the starting one where you will do more quests, gain more abilities, get your 10th level and can start tradeskilling if you so desire. I advice to take one up as soon as you can, even if that means a trip to the capital city, as they are fun, don't cost much money to start with (if at all) and can improve your equipment sensibly or at least give you some useful trinkets like bags. Which one you pick is again matter of prefence, but of course it is probably best if you pick up something your class can gain from.
Remember you can have only 2 primary tradeskills (and all secondary: namely fishing, cooking and first aid). Most of the time you will want a gathering tradeskill (Skinning, mining, herbalism...) and the crafting tradeskill linked to it (blacksmithing or engineering for mining, leatherworking for skinning and so on)
Alchemy is useful for everybody, engineerging is the strangest thing, with gadgets again useful for everybody, but hunters are the one getting the most out of it due to guns and ammo that the engineer can do. Blacksmith is of course useful to chain and plate armor wearers, namely Warriors and paladins (but you can do also weapons with it... still, armor making is the focus at lower level of blacksmithing), Leatherworking is useful to ... wearer of leather! So druids, rogues, hunters and shamans.
Enchanting is another that is pretty useful to everybody and is not coupled with any "gathering" tradeskill. For that fact, many take it together with Tailoring as both do not require a proper gathering skill.. added bonus that Tailoring has Green magical items (that you disechant with Enchanting to get the stuff you need for doing stuff) really really soon.
As for the combat part, you will notice that all 3 classes will have 3 fields of abilities that offer different stuff to your guy. Once you get to level 10, you will achieve talents that will permit you to specialize in one or more of this fields in a Diablo2-like skill system. So if, as an hunter, prefer the shooting part over your pet or traps/melee part, then you will favor the Marksmanship tree and so on.
It is better to examine the talents of all three trees you have available and at least form in your mind an idea of what you want to reach, there are programs on the wow website that let you plan your character's talent expenditure so that you can have a better idea.
You will notice that each talent tree has a "super" talent situated at the end of it and a seried of mid-tree "special" talents that grants you particular bonus or even completely new powers or abilities. These talents in particular you have to keep in mind as they tend to be the focus of that particular tree. with the talent points you will have available once you get to level 60, you are able to get one of this super talents from one tree and one of the mid-talents from another tree, so you are not restricted to specialize in a single tree but you can divide your points achieving a very viable build.
Finally, your character will start the game proficient in the use of some weapons, but he can receive further training along the road. In each capital city there is a "Weapon master" or 2 that can grant you, for money, training in additional weapon categories. This can be useful. For example, as an hunter, you will start without being trained in 2 handed weapons but ususally hunters tend to use such weapons as they can't use shields.
Oh! almost forgot! you can right click on the guards in the capital city or in some of the small town to open up a menu from which you can ask them where is... the class trainer for your class, the tradeskill trainer for each profession, the weapon master and so on. is very useful and, beside providing you directions, will also plant a small flag on your mini and main map, so you know exactly where the guy is.
Now, have fun and you will realize the game is really easy to pick up but still offers dozens of tactical possibilities.
Have a nice day

You poor deluded fool, the game is utter shite. It gets boring very quickly, do this and that blah blah blah. The classes are all unbalanced, blizz support is the worst ever. They never do enough testing before they release patches that then proceed to fuck up users characters. The darkmoon fayre fiasco being a case in point, being taken down on the euro servers because they invested rubbish servers that can't take the load.
I've since cancelled my account with Blizz and a number of others are doing the same, although there will always be fools who sign up to this trash.
If you dislike the game why are you posting in a forum for it. I don't need comments like this, if the game is bad I will find out in a month without spending too much money and cancle my account. It really has nothing to do with the thread unless you think people who are already playing the game need to know your oppnion of it.
BTW, this was directed only at flipflop.
