Yes there has been. The only two types of PvP are Structured PvP (which has a tournament mode and a hot-joinable mode) and WvWvW. Arenanet does not want to spread the community thin across all kinds of different PvP types.
wish i could help you with that but since im an avid explorer/pve player i really didn't look into the e-sport aspects of this game yet. i'll check it out.
