My only problem with Darkfall..

DF is one of my favorite MMO's, right behind EVE and WoW, and it has a lot of great things about it. The one thing I hate though is that there's no sense of adventure in the game. To me, an open world game should give you a certain feeling when discovering a new place, kind of like you just discovered some kinda ancient secret. But in DF when you find a new place there's almost never anything interesting about it. Some examples: When I first subbed I ran off exploring, trying to find one of those chests that are scattered around the world. I found a small river and started swimming around it and along the bottom of the river was a small cave. It was a pretty hard place to find, so I was expecting something nice, but what I got was just a big empty underwater cavern. No special creatures, no rare resource nodes, nothing.. Same thing happened when I was exploring an ogre camp, there was a huge tower in the center of the camp. I thought it might be worth looking through, so I got inside and there was a spiral staircase leading downward. Got to the bottom and, of course, it ended in a brickwall.

And I know this is mainly a PvP game, but there should still be some PvE exploration, mini boss mobs, rare resources, rewards for exploration.. I think the game would be so much better if they just added a little bit of that. I'm tired of finding abandoned castles and caverns.

TL;DR Game lacks exploration.

you only have 1 problem with this game?......then i'd say it's a keeper.

can't remember the last time i played an mmo that only had one problem.

What MMO gives you a sense of adventure. In every free roaming games everyone's running around backa dn forth to the same towns over adn over so theres never any sense of exploring.

Theres many reasons for it, namesly everyone is running where as if it were real, you'd be walking and it'd take days to get from place to place and you'd being camping all the time and searching for food. Stuff like that. In video games you just run to a place and at best it'd take you 5 to 10 minutes if its a giant game world like fallen earth.

The only game I can think of that can give you that explorer feeling is minecraft. but it doesn't have anything interesting to explore excent mediocre houses and trees and such. Most of the good stuff use user made. But you could always download maps other people have made for adventuring.

Other than Minecraft and second life, i dont know about mmo that can give you a sense of adventure

Wish they had more sand and tools personally. And obviously a new UI and no bunnyhopping etc.

Plenty of games give you a sense of exploration, even if you're led to a certain place atleast there's something to see. Of course themepark and sandbox exploration is completely different, but it's almost always there.

And @jakd, there's a few other issues I have with this game, but none that are gamebreaking. I just felt like pointing this one out because it's always bothered me, and I think it should be fixed. Oh and, I'm subbed to DF and I probably will keep my sub going for a long while.

I was talking about this the other day to my old df buddy when exploring terrorist caves in afganistan in project reality mod.

there are actually lot of cool secrety caves and things in the world to find and explore, and unfortunately your right, they never put anything rewarding inside. There are a couple instances where there are mobs inside, ie the hag swamp cave in dwarf lands can be hard to find, infact you might never know it was there unless someone described how to find it.

I agree this is one of my gripes with darkfall, the world designers made alot of cool structures which are obviously intended to have mobs or something inside but are empty. Its something I hope will be adressed in df2.0, although for me its not top prioty, its still something should have been fixed within the years since release.

    edit:

I think to say that the game lacks exploration is wrong, i'm curious which mmos you think are better. in my experience DF offers much better exploration than any mmo ive played, despite its lack of rewards for exploring, simply because the world is THAT big, its too big for the population.

if people hadn't made collaborated maps of all mobs in the game world, exploring to find all the mobs myself would have been the biggest grind ;p. so there was plenty of reward for exploring when the game was new, just not an artificial one. its just all mapped now over the years. after 2.0 alot of map stuff is redone/relocated so I expect what most people will be doing then is exploring!

I totally agree . ... that was my first big disappointment when I realized that I would never find anything outside of new mobs while exploring since the chests are pretty worthless now adays. I don't really like chaos chests either. Going to new places is usually in search of PVP and I think that they knew that this would be the case for most people so didn't put in what you are asking for because of that which turns out being a mistake because you have less reasons for people to go visit some of the really cool places that they made. All of these places has the potential to be an epic battleground but you are right in that its a disappointment while exploring unless you just want cool visuals or to find some new mobs and enchanting mats.

I think I know what you mean. Its not just the fact that you discovered ancient ruins yoy want know who built them, why did they build them and why are they in ruins.

How about the fact that Adventurine does not know how to communicate with their playerbase?

    That's the real problem.

I think its to due more with the lack of stuff to interact with. Lets say you find a teasure chest. Is it even worth clicking on it? Not really. The chance to find a treasure map in a regular stupid 10g chest would be cool but there are a lot more things that they could do over time to make this game known for the best PVE questing.

Lets say you go to a spot on Agon that you haven't been to. What if there was a riddle to solve from the ruins or environment . .. or even hints from the way that mobs acted that led the player to unlock a quest that has a reward that makes you tremble as you loot it in hopes that you will be able to bank? That experience would be more fullfilling for most people than knowing about any lore.

Factions vs factions? What if someone could build faction with a type of mob so that they could unlock special quests from them? What if GMs surprised players when 2.0 was released by doing random things often like the mobs suddenly ask a player for help in raiding an enemy NPC city and then mass together as some unexpected storyline unfolded? Unexpected events? Events that happen to players who stumble across clues and figure out a puzzle? People would have reasons to explore and click on stuff, examine details, camp low level mobs that they do not need because they have a hunch about one of the hints they found out about that monster from a different spawn?

If players knew that GMs surprise them every week than there would be a hell of a lot more motivation. Think if there were puzzles to figure out from various hints given that some players have been able to piece together from looting treasure maps, notes, or clicking on special items during certain times or following instructions given by odd runes in various places . .. could Darkfall players who enjoy PVE ever have the chance to take notes from hints they find? That if these things changed after every expansion? They could do it in a way that didn't cost much money in new pixels.

Think older role-playing games and the feeling that you had when you first started playing your first MMORPG and wondered what could be out there for you. What if a couple Darkfall DEVs got together each month (or each week even) and discussed among eachother what dynamic quests they would create for that month. 'Hrmmm for the first week after 2.0 should we have the goblins provide hints that takes those fortunate enough to find it somewhere out in the ocean from the hints gathered from goblin spawn all over Agon . ... and eventually we have have mobs controlled by DEVs in there somewhere and some global messages to incite hotspots until someone is instructed to take a boat to a certain location out in the ocean to click on a certain rock that has the final clue?

Shit they can control mobs . .. they could do anything. So much more if simple things were added like runes in certain places, special things to click on for special display messages, treasure maps, etc. They already have many of the mechanics to make this the most dynamic PVE game in existence. We need population. We need people exploring ruins in search of something for some reason that they are not sure of but have a hunch about some hint . ... more population comes from possibilities. More PVP comes from population. More money for more DEVs to create more of this kind of once in a lifetime content. Thats what I would have some dedicated DEVs do if I ran Darkfall. Start with the launch . ... and go from there. Make it epic than even scrubs may stumble across. Global messages to give everyone a chance so people don't feel that only the hardcore will get to participate. Etc.

TBH i cant belive what im reading :P

The only real problem from darkfall is aventurine, the "others problems" are just AV incompentence and fail.

That shit may sound carebear but I think that the PVE should have more dangling carrots out there. The main focus of the game should be attracting new players into the game and keeping them interested imo. If one person was decicated in creating dynamic quests for noobs and controlling mobs than maybe thats all it would take for steady incoming noob population? That shit is worth developers to think about because MMORPGs out there do not keep things unpredictable and changing like this game could potentially be and most people hope that it is like that when they first try it out.
