Frankly, a list of innovations and features don't matter because

Games are about having fun.

And TERA is really, really fun. Who cares what features it has or doesn't have?!?

GAMES like MORTAL ONLINE and DARKFALL with all those features and more lack in one key feature: FUN. Games should be fun, not spreadsheets (EvE). I'm glad the new batch, GW2, TERA, and TSW (maybe, but tbh it doesn't look fun at all, just interesting), is focusing on fun rather than bad ways to innovate.

I've played every MMO since AC1 and I can't even remember ever being this hooked. The ambience of the world, the animations, the sheer variety in playstyles. The world might be static with repetitive quests, but the way you interact with the world is constantly changing whether it is PVP or PVE. Every time i take down a creature as an archer there are a ton of different strategies I could use. I can kite, slow, AoE stun and then charge up, or just charge up twice and let loose.

PVP forces you to think on the fly and choose the skills that will best exploit your foe's weaknesses. I was questing near Lumbertown when a player from the guild we were at war with descended on me in his slayer fury. Already vulnerable from my fights I threw down a backshot arrow, exploding backward, and then proceeded to draw 20 mobs in the hopes they would get between me and him. In the confusion, he charged me, hit me a few times and then as I lay wounded, I pulled out a slow on him, then backpedaled in the direction of the mobs. He slash comboed, flying through the air but also hitting the mobs and drawing their aggro. We kept fighting this way, exchanging aggro, until eventually I got the upperhand and finished him with a charge shot. It was exciting and different, as we charged, jumped and ran across the map. I'm sure I won't have another fight exactly like it.

I've played/subbed to SWTOR, DF, AO, AOC, FFXI, L2, Ryzom, WoW, GW, and basically every other major mmo on the market including niche ones like RYL and Earthrise. TERA is the most fun I've had. It just feels completely different. Sure, it has similar features as other MMOs, but the experience is a breath of fresh air. It's like going from one country to another on a different continent. The people live similarly, eat 3 meals a day, speak the same language, and they have jobs. But the experience, the culture, and the environment is vastly different.

Not everyone will like TERA just as not everyone likes traveling to specific countries, but I can almost guarantee this game wil not be short of subs despite competition. The dedicated company helps too.

tl;dr

Don't focus on the feature list. Focus on having fun. If you have fun, buy it and don't worry about what anyone else says. This should go for any game. Remember any feature can be implemented poorly (EvE, DF, MO).

The best way to do it is to ballence both. you do need fun, however you also need to change it up abit. because whats fun for afew hours wont be fun for a year. this is why alot of people want new features. the old ones are boring and have been done to death. we need something new, and new usually comes from innovation.

    Because i can.

the pvp was really fun.  just over the bridge in lumbertown, constant fighting going on all weekend.  i really enjoy healing in this game.  much more challenging than the current whack-a-mole styles that are out now.

    I've got the straight edge.

Depends on how much you play it.

$15 a month gets you what, 6-8 beers? That's one night of getting drunk vs say, 20-30 hours a month of gaming. If you take it easy you'll still get your money's worth.

Most people on this forum approach a game as if it has to entertain you 24/7, as if no one here has a job or whatever else - You just have to put it into perspective. At a certain point it's not the game's fault but the person who should take a good look at what they're doing ;p

    Playing: WF
Played: WoW, GW2, L2, WAR, AoC, DnL (2005), GW, LotRO, EQ2, TOR, CoH (RIP), STO, TSW, TERA, EVE, ESO, BDO
Tried: EQ, UO, AO, EnB, TCoS, Fury, Ryzom, EU, DDO, TR, RF, CO, Aion, VG, DN, Vindictus, AA

I agree with the OP, reviews and threads on the beta have been dissecting the game on features, or dismissing it on its weaknesses such as the questing, while ignoring or underestimating the satisfaction that can be gained through the combat.

Yes the questing doesn’t compare to WOW, the open world lacks RIFT’s dynamics, the story and npc interactions aren’t a patch on SWTOR’s, but they all lacked good combat, and for many players that was a serious flaw. Good combat can provide the reason for questing, crafting, pvp etc, those other mmos just made these peripheral features better while ignoring the core.

After all why did people keep playing the Street Fighter 2 iterations for over a decade?

    This.

Everyone is beginning to treat mmos like second lives and they therefore need every feature, but mmorpg fans are losing sight of the reason we play games: to have fun and dip out of reality. If you're playing games 24/7, you should find something else to occupy your time.

I tried it out and didn't have a problem with missing features. I just found it boring, it felt like a mix between Aion and Kingdoms of Amalur with a less interesting story. I hope it does well because all competition in the genre is good  but personally I'll be giving this one a pass.

I agree with the OP.  It's going to be hard to innovate questing.  GW2 has great ideas.  But the Gameplay itself of TERA is great.  Was I bored to kill X mobs?  No.  Esp. as you get into the higher level 2 encounters are not the same.  The A.I. plays each situation different and you have to respond to your position and the mobs position.  That's excellent.  Too many trolls.  This game is MASSIVELY underrated.

I'll be honest. If it werent for the combat sytem i wouldn't care about this. I had to play for myself to notice how aesome it is. I just hope I can find some friends that play it and start up adecent guild

Not considering it until I try a demo... really don't know why all MMOs don't release a trial at launch.

    I agree

TERA is all the fun i wanted in MMO.

But it has one very big problem....Its P2P

Because GW2 is about to bring most of what TERA brings for B2P price

And only the most hardcore fans will remain.

I mean i really wanted to play TERA , but its kind of pointless :S

    There's an Open Beta.

As to GW2, I agree that it has many of the same elements that TERA has, and more, so I can't blame people for waiting for GW2 instead, it's just a pity that TERA will be ignored by so many when it deserves better.

If your talking about Tera if you signed up for beta about few day before CBT they sent out about 1000 keys. Also some website will hand them out for free around weds/thrus. CBT1 was IGN, CBT2 was zam. I'll make post on when CBT3 key come out.
